The photography of Rainer Schlegelmilch is renowned in motor racing circles, in a career spanning over half a century, with a number of books featuring his work to his credit. Since the early seventies he has concentrated mainly on Formula One, but prior to that he attended numerous international sports car races, like Le Mans, the Targa Florio and even the Can-Am series in the USA, and this book is a journal of that period from 1962 to 1973. It is presented essentially in a circuit-by-circuit format, rather than a chronological order, which provides one with an insight into the changes that occurred, not only to the cars, but to the circuits, safety features, fashions, etc through the decade.

The foreword is by six times 24 Hours of Le Man's winner Jacky Ickx, titled “The Splendour of Endurance Racing”, whilst the text is in eight languages by respected motoring writer David Tremayne This concentrates on some of the main protagonists of the era, like Enzo Ferrari, Ferdinand Piech, John Wyer, and drivers like Phil Hill, Henri Pescarolo, Jo Siffert, and Pedro Rodriguez. With a photographer of such calibre, the book is definitely picture-led, featuring a wealth of stunning period images predominantly in colour, but also a number of evocative B&W images. They feature not only images of the cars in action, but in static pose in the pits and paddock, with numerous ambience images of the drivers, pit crew, wives, girlfriends and spectators, a truly kaleidoscopic view of the endurance racing scene of the period.

The first watch connoisseur's guide to explore a century of high-performing, stylish chronometers for watersports adventures above and below the waves-sailing, yachting and diving.

From the Rolex Submariner, Omega Seamaster and Blancpain Fifty Fathoms to dive watches by DOXA, Tudor, IWC, Patek Philippe and TAG Heuer, Sea Time: Watches Inspired by Sailing, Yachting and Diving takes a pinpoint-periscope look at more than 100 contemporary and vintage nautical-inspired mechanical timepieces. With a foreword by best-selling adventure novelist Clive Cussler and images by fine-art photographer Peter Eaton Gurnz, Sea Time -- written by Aaron Sigmond and Mark Bernardo -- interweaves history, the sailing-countdown chronographs and dive watches' classic style in a comprehensive, first-of-its-kind monograph. A detailed look at the development and history of these oceanic- and coastal-inspired chronometers is followed by an encyclopedic index: chapters include "The Icons" (the dozen most classic dive watches ever made), "Sailing and Regatta Watches," "Dive Watches" and -- for those merely lounging instead of plunging into the briny deep- - "By the Pool and At the Shore." Informative and visually striking, this captivating guide is the ideal gift for watch collectors and timepiece devotees, as well as all those who have a timeless appreciation for rakish, sporty style.

As swimming mansions they are exposed to very particular conditions that confront the boat designer with special challenges. The materials must be able to withstand the forces of wind and weather, and spatial concepts must adapt to the special physical characteristics of water. The selection of approximately 40 motor yachts, each presented on two to three double pages, covers the entire spectrum of this species of boat: from relatively affordable, serially produced motor yachts, to the 150 meter long, one-of-a-kind luxury mega yacht. The volume is an invitation to discover and explore the maritime visions of the 21st century.

The chopper is quintessentially American and, since Easy Rider, has embodied the American dream. This book tells the true story of the most rebellious of all motorcycles.

“Where did you get this motorcycle?” “It’s not a motorcycle, baby, it’s a chopper.”

                                                                                    — Butch (Bruce Willis), Pulp Fiction

Whether you collect custom motorcycles or want to throw rocks at those biker freaks who leave you deaf as they zoom by, you need to know the story of the chopper. Because the story of the chopper is the story of popular culture.

The Great Depression, 1960s youth culture, folk art, the conservative press, old-school revivals — the chopper plays a part in all of these.

In this book, leading motorcycle journalist and vintage motorcycle expert Paul d’Orléans tells the chopper’s true story, from its origins to its renaissance today. With its well-informed texts and showcase of historical and contemporary photographs, it finally gives the chopper the respectful attention it deserves.

The chopper is a quintessentially American invention, rivalling jazz and abstract expressionism as one of the country’s most emblematic cultural exports of the twentieth century. Choppers have deep roots in the origins of American motorcycling, flourishing after the Second World War out of a heady mix of personal mobility, an identification with the legends of the Wild West, and an interracial cross-pollination simultaneous to the creation of rock ‘n’ roll. With its own system of unspoken rules for both machine and rider, the chopper has a special status in the motorcycle world — a position it earned despite being actively discouraged by the professional motorcycle industry for decades.

By the time the film Easy Rider was released, the chopper was firmly established as an icon of the American dream. Choppers are instantly recognizable — the dangerously stretched forks, crazy paint jobs, and feet-forward riding position are an outrageous statement of freedom, which sprouted in California and spread like a weed to the rest of the world.

Since the 1920s, an independent scene of riders and builders from around the world has continuously evolved the canon of the chopper. What began as the ultimate American folk art movement, with a self-identified “outsider” status, has now been marketed and commercially exploited for generations by pop culture, television shows, and print media, while government agencies use choppers as symbols of crime and anarchy. Despite the fact that the chopper’s real story is much more complex and thrilling than the stereotypes that surround it, it has never been told — until now.

In this book, leading motorcycle journalist and vintage motorcycle expert Paul d’Orléans tells the chopper’s true story, from its origins to its renaissance today. He provides insight into legendary builders such as Arlen Ness, super-cool riders both male and female, “patch club” motorcycle gangs, ingenious Japanese workshops, and the young enthusiasts who are now reviving the chopper’s popularity.

With its well-informed texts and showcase of historical and contemporary photographs, this book finally gives the chopper the respectful attention it deserves.

Paul d’Orléans, also known as “the Vintagent,” is a leading expert on classic motorcycles. For the past 30 years, the motorcycle-obsessed cultural historian has explored global motorcycle movements, most recently in two books. In Gestalten’s The Ride, he looked at the contemporary custom scene, while Ton Up! is devoted to cafe racers. In The Chopper, d’Orléans turns his keen insight back towards America to discover the true history of this misunderstood model. In addition to writing for the website the Vintagent, he contributes to monthly magazines in six languages. D’Orléans also documents the vintage motorcycle scene on MotoTintype.com and serves as a consultant to leading international auction houses on topics related to motorcycles.

The British Museum’s collection of watches is unsurpassed anywhere in the world. With examples ranging from sixteenth-century early stack freed watches (the first with built-in mechanisms to prevent them from running faster as their mainsprings wound down) to decorative watches of the seventeenth century, from precision-made chronometers of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to mass-produced watches of the modern era, the collection follows the complete history of the watch through an incredible 500 years.

Strikingly illustrated with 250 colour images, this authoritative compendium presents that history with a range and depth unequalled by any other book. All the major makers of Europe and America are represented in its pages, many with multiple examples. Here you will find gems from the London workshops of Thomas Tompion, whose reputation stretched far and wide even in his own time; samples from the craftsmanship of Swiss-born Abraham Louis Breguet, who supplied the finest and costliest watches to the crown heads and aristocratic families of the Western world; and many other exquisite masterworks. Saul Peckham’s photography captures every finely-wrought detail, from the ornamentation of faces to the precision and intricacy of gears. An essential volume for horologists, collectors, and aficionados alike, The History of Watches will take you on a fascinating journey through time as recorded by the world’s most illustrious timepieces.
