Stefan Sagmeister, Steven Pinker, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Steven Heller
ID: 16545
Видавництво: Phaidon

Stefan Sagmeister’s newest project encourages long-term thinking and reminds us that many things in the world are improving.

Initially conceived in 2020 as the world entered pandemic lockdown, Stefan Sagmeister has created a book that looks at the state of the world today, illuminating, through collected data, how far we’ve come, and encouraging us to think about where we can go from here.

Statistics are vividly brought to life, as numbers are transformed into graphs, inlaid into nineteenth-century paintings, embroidered canvases, lenticular prints, and hand-painted water glasses.

The book includes a foreword from psychologist and leading authority on language and the mind, Steven Pinker; a featured essay by graphic designer and historian Steven Heller; and a conversation between Sagmeister and Hans Ulrich Obrist, curator and artistic director of Serpentine Galleries in London and will appeal to all visually minded readers, providing a positive reaction to the tumultuous news cycle of recent years.

Published in softcover with flaps Now is Better is contained within a die-cut slipcase and accompanied by a lenticular print designed by Sagmeister. Now is Better is an intriguing and thoughtful visual meditation on our daily lives.

Steven Heller and Véronique Vienne
ID: 12291
Видавництво: Laurence King Publishing

This accessible book demonstrates how ideas influenced and defined graphic design. Lavishly illustrated, it is both a great source of inspiration and a provocative record of some of the best examples of graphic design from the last hundred years. The entries, arranged broadly in chronological order, range from technical (overprinting, rub-on designs, split fountain); to stylistic (swashes on caps, loud typography, and white space); to objects (dust jackets, design handbooks); and methods (paper cut-outs, pixelation).

About the authors:

Steven Heller is the co-chair of the MFA Design/Designer as Author + Entrepreneur program at the School of Visual Arts, New York. He is the author of more than 180 books on design and popular culture and the recipient of the 2011 Smithsonian National Design Award.

Véronique Vienne has worked at a number of US magazines as art director and is the author of The Art of Doing Nothing and The Art of Imperfection, as well as Something to be Desired. A frequent contributor to Graphis and Metropolis magazines, she lives in Paris.

Ever wondered how different the world will be without calendars? Try arranging meetings with your colleagues, or even remembering the anniversaries and birthdays of your loved ones, or try booking your next vacation withoutthe calendar or any form of date and time. Thinking back, we are truly grateful to renowned historians, astronomers and kings (yes, kings) for giving us the humble calendar that we so rely on today. In this showcase of great calendar designs, 365 Calendars will provide a good selection of examples that offers a unique and innovative touch to one of the most traditional of products—the calendar.  This collection offers uniquely-designed calendars by designers and studios such as Kenji Yano, Masaaki Kimura, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, "Sonner, Vallee u. Partner", Massachusetts College of Art and Design and many more.

Featuring designs that are exceptionally unusual to the downright bizarre, 365 Calendars initially began as a quest to explore the far reaches of calendar design, pushing the limits of what is aesthetically and conceptually possible. The result is an extraordinary range of calendar designs contributed by various designers and studios from around the world that have rewritten the rules and conventions of calendar design as we know it. The 365 Calendars collection consists of ring-binded calendars, calendars that can be folded into cubes, calendars that come in highly configurable cutout sheets as well as calendars that resemble measuring tapes, just to name a few. In total, the 365 Calendars collection offers uniquely designed calendars by designers and studios such as Kenji Yano, Masaaki Kimura, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, "Sonner, Vallee u. Partner", Massachusetts College of Art and Design and many more.

Cutting-edge graphic work from the Arab world and Iran that is emblematic of the cultural emancipation of this entire area.

The wave of protests that started this year in Tunisia, Egypt, Yemen, Libya, and other countries have made it clear just how much the Middle East is searching for a new identity. Young designers in the region are playing a part in this movement by increasingly emancipating themselves creatively. In their work, they are charting their own compelling course between local visual convention and a modern international style.

Arabesque 2 documents the potential of this current creative emancipation in the Arab world and Iran. The book features examples of recent innovative and groundbreaking design work that is inspired by the richness of the region’s visual culture.

Given the important role of calligraphy in the Middle East, Arabesque 2 focuses on typography. The book presents a wide range of Arabic fonts and typefaces inspired by traditional calligraphy. These are accompanied by a rich selection of applications. Select examples of design and graffiti serve as powerful demonstrations of how text can be used illustratively. This work is particularly relevant to those creating street art and poster design.

Arabesque 2 also features graphic design, logos, editorial design, and illustration by young designers and activists from Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Lebanon, and the United Arab Emirates. Regardless of the location and nationality of their creators, all of the examples included in the book combine modern design with the traditional, letter-based canon of Arab forms in striking ways.

The book’s preface is written by John Martin, co-founder of Art Dubai. Additional texts and interviews describe the environments in which the featured designers and artists work. Editors Ben Wittner and Sascha Thoma round out Arabesque 2 with a CD-ROM that features four typefaces related to its themes.

Timothy Samara

Видавництво: Rockport

A new and updated 3rd Edition of Rockport's best-selling Design Elements, a visually rich and accessible handbook that presents the fundamentals of design in lists, tips, brief text, and examples. With new images and diagrams, the book covers everything from working with grids, color application, typography, and imagery to how to finally put it all together.

Features include:

- The ultimate primer on graphic design's basic visual toolkit—dot, line, plane, texture, space, and contrast—and how these basics underpin all successful layouts
- An in-depth look at color — from its optical qualities and its effect on type to its potential for communication concepts and emotions
- One of the most thorough compilations of typography concepts to be found — including information on letterform structure and optics, combining typeface styles, the mechanics of detailed text typesetting, and using type as image
- An extensive overview of imagery — the endless possibilities of medium, depiction, abstraction, stylization, and how these all communicate effectively
- Methods for integrating type and image, including a tutorial on using grid systems to structure layouts
- Twenty rules for making good design — and the best ways to break them

Being a creative designer is often about coming up with unique design solutions. But when the basic rules of design are ignored in an effort to be distinctive, design becomes useless. In language, a departure from the rules is only appreciated as great literature if recognition of the rules underlies the text. Graphic design is a "visual language," and brilliance is recognized in designers whose work seems to break all the rules, yet communicates its messages clearly.

He has been a senior art director at Ruder Finn, New York's largest public relations firm, and senior art director at Pettistudio, a small multidisciplinary design firm. Before relocating to Manhattan, he was principal of Physiologic in Syracuse, located in upstate New York. In 1990, he graduated a Trustee Scholar from the Graphic Design program at the University of the Arts, Philadelphia. Mr. Samara is a faculty member at New York's School of Visual Arts, New York University, Purchase College/SUNY, and The New School, and has published six books on design and typography, all through Rockport Publishers: Making and Breaking the Grid; Typography Workbook; Publication Design Workbook; Type Style Finder; Design Elements, Design Evolution, and, most recently, Letterforms, released in September, 2018.
