George R. Kravis II
ID: 12710
Видавництво: Rizzoli

An ambitious new survey of industrial design from 1900 to the present day in the United States, Europe, and around the world, as told through selected objects from the George R. Kravis II Collection.

Destined to become a new classic in the design genre, this major work summarizes an enormous topic — the creation of everyday objects for mass production and consumption from 1900 to the present — and shows how these products have become both symbols of the modern age and harbingers of our future. It covers the work of the heroes of modern and post-modern design, from the early pioneers — Dreyfuss, Bel Geddes, and Eames — to the leaders in the field today, including Starck, Newson, and Ive.

More than 200 objects from the Kravis Design Center’s collection are highlighted as important exemplars of industrial design. A wide range of media is represented, including furniture, metalwork, ceramics, and plastics. New research by contributing scholars has uncovered illuminating details about each object that help tell a more complete story of design in the past 100 years.

Among the more than 400 photographs, which include a wealth of historical images and ephemera, are those of the objects taken especially for this book and seen as never before, in vibrant colour and precise detail. This concise new history introduces a whole new audience to the topic in a style that is at once educational and accessible.

About the Author

George R. Kravis II has amassed more than 4,000 industrial design objects in his collection at the Kravis Design Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Penny Sparke is Professor of Design History at Kingston University in London.

An authoritative survey of the 20th century’s defining movement in design and the applied arts

The powerful aesthetic and philosophical framework that Modernism ushered in during the early part of the 20th century revolutionized the built world, transformed our living spaces and lifestyles, and fundamentally changed the way we think about design. As they experimented with new forms, materials and techniques, Modernist designers rejected historical precedents to prioritize function over history and tradition. This comprehensive volume brings together all facets and scales of Modernist design, presenting the vast breadth of both towering and lesser-known figures, and revealing unexpected connections and new insights. With sections on furniture, lighting, glass, ceramics, textiles, industrial and product design, graphic design and posters, architecture and interiors, and featuring profiles of nearly a hundred influential creators, including such iconic figures as Bruno Mathsson, Charlotte Perriand and László Moholy-Nagy, as well as architects Alvar Aalto, Le Corbusier, Eliel Saarinen and Walter Gropius, the book’s scope is unprecedented.

Complete with specially commissioned essays by established academics and subject specialists, and with over 600 illustrations, the majority in colour, Modernist Design Complete is set to become the definitive reference for a generation, indispensable for the designer’s studio, the library shelves or the collector’s desk.

About the Author:

The definitive publication on the most exuberant design period of the 20th century

Emerging in the late 1970s, the multistranded cultural phenomenon that came to be known as Postmodernism proclaimed the death of modernism. Postmodern architects and designers eschewed the rigid ‘international’ style that many felt dehumanized its inhabitants and cities, promoting a belief that design need not follow rules. Instead, they revelled in borrowing from the past, celebrated colour, pattern and ad-hocism, and produced a dazzling spectrum of objects, spaces and buildings in the process. It became a style of its own, the defining look of the 1980s, and placed the names and objects of Denise Scott Brown, Ettore Sottsass, Charles Jencks, Alessandro Mendini and Michael Graves in our homes. Today, aided by a return to an interest in the hand-made, the aesthetics and the preoccupations of the style are enjoying a revival in a new generation of producers and an older generation of collectors.

<Postmodern Design Complete tells the story of how the movement came into being, introducing the ‘masters’ under whom it flourished, and the principal figures, from around the world, in the fields of architecture, furniture, graphic design, textiles, product and industrial design. It also includes an overview of notable postmodern homes and interiors and contemporary designs influenced by the movement, most of which have rarely been published. Highly informed and accessible texts, including a foreword by Charles Jencks and an afterword by Denise Scott Brown, are illustrated with images that bring together classics and little-seen rarities, unusual objets d’art, and mass-produced items.

Incorporating the most knowledgeable sources and material in a single volume, Postmodern Design Complete is the definitive overview of the movement’s seminal years and one that the design-conscious of any persuasion will want.

Contents List:

Introduction • 1. Masters of Postmodernism • 2. Forms of Postmodernism • 3. Living with Postmodernism • 4. Postmodernism Continues

Current fashion is a complex phenomenon. In a constant state of constant flux, contemporary fashion combines a mix of the different cultural aspects that inform the modern individual. Atlas of Fashion Designers is born out of this proposition, and features a compilation of the most important fashion designers and their work in the past five years, selected from a multi-disciplinary perspective that display the heterogeneous mix of today’s fashion world.

Featured designers all have one trait in common: they were singled out, not only for the quality of their work, but also because they illustrate different perspectives in their approach to fashion. This book includes designers with a wide array of visions, from classical haute couture to those who experiment with developing fields such as anthropology, new textiles, high technology, architecture, art, or recycling. From Ricardo Tiscci, Nicholas Ghesquière to Sybilla, to artists who are primarily concerned with pure fashion such as Lucy Orta, or to those investigators who concern themselves with innovation in the fields of textile research and technology, such as Issey Miyake or Hussein Chalayan.

Atlas of Fashion Designers is a very relevant and useful reference in a hybrid society, which is composed of ever increasing heterogeneous elements. By offering a synthetic, fluid and diverse approach to the subject, the “Atlas” draws a map of the complex world of fashion at present time, and looks forward to what it may be tomorrow.

Видавництво: Taschen

The evolution of style from antiquity to 1888 Originally published in France between 1876 and 1888, Auguste Racinet’s Le Costume historique was the most wide-ranging and intelligent study of clothing ever published.

Covering the world history of costume, dress, and style from antiquity through the end of the 19th century, the great work — “consolidated” in 1888 into 6 volumes containing nearly 500 plates — remains, to this day, completely unique in its scope and detail. Racinet’s organization by culture and subject has been preserved in TASCHEN’s magnificent and complete reprint, as have excerpts from his delightful descriptions and often witty comments. Perusing these beautifully detailed and exquisitely coloured illustrations, you’ll discover everything from the garb of ancient Etruscans to traditional Eskimo attire to 19th-century French women’s couture. Though Racinet’s study spans the globe from ancient times through his own, his focus is on European clothing from the Middle Ages to the 1880s and this subject is treated with exceeding passion and attention to detail.

The Complete Costume History is an absolutely invaluable reference for students, designers, artists, illustrators, and historians; it is also an immensely fascinating and inspirational book for anyone with an interest in clothing and style.
