Monica Bellucci, the Italian film superstar and world-famous model, was born in Città di Castello in Umbria and began her career as a model at the age of 16. Her film career began in the early 1990s. In 1992, she appeared as one of Dracula's brides in her first major English-language film, Bram Stoker's Dracula. With roles in Malèna, Brotherhood of the Wolf, and Irreversible, she gained international recognition, but she became most famous for her roles as Persephone in The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, and as Mary Magdalene in The Passion of the Christ, directed by Mel Gibson. In 2005, Bellucci played the beautiful, evil Mirror Queen in the fantasy film The Brothers Grimm. She received the Nastro d’Argento Award for Best Supporting Actress (2003) and was nominated for several other awards, including a César Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1996 for her role in the film *L’Appartement* (Love Lies).
