The definitive monograph on Dieter Rams, one of the most influential product designers of the twentieth century

As head of design at Braun from 1961 to 1995, Dieter Rams created some of the twentieth century’s most iconic objects. Rams’s life and work are indelibly linked to his thoughts about how people live, and how they can live better.

Products he designed in the 1960s are still produced and sold today, and his ideas on good design continue to inspire designers and consumers. Now available again with a stunning new cover, this comprehensive monograph, with a foreword by Jonathan (Jony) Ive, former chief design officer of Apple, explores not only Rams’s life and work, but also his design philosophy.

The book includes detailed text covering Rams’s life, the intellectual context in which he worked, his designs for Braun and Vitsœ, and the ideas and lectures he developed as an advocate for good design. Sketches and photographs of finished products and prototypes provide insight into Rams’s design process, diverse archival material gives a complete picture of his life and work, and specially commissioned photographs of Dieter Rams’s house and the Braun archive provide an exclusive glimpse of the world’s most complete collection of Rams’s designs.

Known for the hundreds of iconic products he designed for Braun and Vitsœ, this comprehensive and exhaustive monograph also features Rams's only architectural work and the ideas about living sustainably embodied in his ‘ten principles’.

A major survey of the Japanese designers, artisans, manufacturers and technologies that have shaped the world of modern design

A dedication to craft and the finest production quality have been an integral part of culture and day-to-day life in Japan for centuries. For the Japanese, the concept of design is not limited to functionality or materiality, but wholly connected with ancient culture and rituals. In this sense, a chair is much more than what you sit on, a cup more than what you drink from: these objects are to be reflected upon, to be touched and cherished.

As mass manufacturing became widespread in the post-war period, fascinating cross-cultural exchanges began to take place between Japan and the West. These gave rise not only to timeless objects of great beauty and utility, but innovations in materials, form and technology. Far beyond the icons of Japanese design – the perfectly weighted Kikkoman soy sauce bottle, Yanagi’s butterfly stool, the Sony Walkman – the products and objects that have emerged from the country over the past seven decades, few of which have been widely exported, serve to delight and draw admiration. In recent years, a new generation of designers – Nendo, Yoshioka – have taken Japanese creativity into entirely new territory, reconceptualizing the very meaning of design.

No attempt has been made to present a complete overview of Japanese design, until now. Showcasing over eighty designers, hundreds of objects, and contributions from both Japanese and Western design experts, this volume will become the definitive work on the subject for many years to come.

Contents List:

Foreword by Maasaki Kanai • Introduction: The Craft of Japanese Design • The Design Titans • The Designers and Everyday Icons: Tables & Chairs • Essay by Naomi Pollock • Food & Drink • Essay by Makoto Shimazaki • On&Off • Essay by Shinji Hamada • Posters & Packaging • Warp & Weft • Essay by Matilda McQuaid • Lifestyle & Leisure • A–Z of Designers

The excellence of Italian design through 100 vases from the beginning of the last century to the present.

What, if anything, sets an “Italian” vase apart from the vast numbers of vases produced worldwide? A vase is both an everyday object and an object that lends itself to a huge variety of interpretations, a field in which Italian designers excel in terms of originality and recognizability (not to mention the inherent “sustainability” of the vase as object, typically made from the most ecological of materials, like clay or silica glass).

The intention behind 100 Vases of Italian Design is to analyse and provide a possible response to the concept of Italian style by exploring one of its most common and enduring expressions.

Materials, forms, tradition, and innovation unfold before readers’ eyes, page after page, helping them seek meaning in the challenge posed by the title: the selection comprises vases — all of which have gone into production, sometimes as a small or very small series — from the past century, from Galileo Chini to Fabio Novembre, spanning the golden era from the 1930s to the 1960s.

Introduced by the essays by Marco Meneguzzo and Enrico Morteo on the concept and the history of Italian vases, the book invites the reader to discover 100 years of materials, forms, tradition and invention.

About the Author:

Art and design historian, author and curator, Marco Meneguzzo teaches History of contemporary art and Museology and Management of exhibition systems at Accademia di Brera, Milan. He is member of the scientific committee of the official archives of Mario Schifano, Vincenzo Agnetti, Marcello Morandini, Letizia Battaglia, Ugo La Pietra and is president of the Giò Pomodoro Archive. Enrico Morteo, architect, critic and historian of design and architecture, collaborates with major international design magazines.

1000 Vases shines a light on unique pieces made by independent designers from over 35 countries

A vase is never merely a container. As Georges Braque once said, "the vase gives form to emptiness": ever since the earliest human civilizations, this object has had a purpose that is greater than its function and it perennially seeks experimentation in shape and expression.

The 1,000 vases presented in this book are an eloquent demonstration of this. They come from 35 different countries and more than 80% have been made by women or independent designers and artists born between 1988 and 1993, each of whom was invited to create a free interpretation of the same archetype, resulting in a spectrum of the infinite creativity inspired by the many possible versions of a single item. Made from an enormous range of materials (ceramic, terracotta, porcelain, metal, wood, glass, as well as natural fibers, industrial waste and recycled plastic), using techniques both ancient and ultra-modern (3D printing) and belonging to different categories (from amphora to jar, jug to carafe), almost all sit on the borderline that simultaneously unites and separates art, design and craftsmanship.

About the Author:

Pier Paolo Pitacco lives and works between Paris and Milan, where he has been at the centre of the most important editorial events related to the success of Italian Style. Responsible for the artistic realization of Uomo Vogue, he then developed the projects of Donna and Mondo Uomo as art director. He has been the Artistic Director also of Elle Italia from 1988 to 1999.

Malene Lytken

Издательство: Strandberg Publishing

Not just a design object, but also the symbol of a particularly Danish way of life.

Lamp design is a field that continues to attract great attention, from both designers and design aficionados. With Poul Henningsen’s iconic PH-lamp as its point of departure the book tells the stories behind 100 Danish lamp designs through text and images, and introduces the reader to the inventions that enabled the first revolutionizing light sources.

Lighting is a key element in ‘hygge’ – the Danish definition of a warm and cosy ambience. Although hard-core functionalists like Henningsen called for form to follow function, real-life factors required them to compromise, and this came to define Danish lamp design: hygge is a crucial quality that had to be included in the design. Thus, the purpose of the modern Danish lamp was– and is – not only to provide light but also to act as a decorative element and to spread a cosy ambience.

About the Author:

Malene Lytken is a trained designer and art and design historian and is an employee with Designmuseum Denmark. Lytken holds a PhD for her dissertation Candles and Lamps in Danish Homes.

Packed with beautiful images taken from the extensive Sottsass archives and including drawings and sketches from the designer's countless sketchbooks, the book explores his entire career from the 1940s to the 2000s, covering everything from his architectural projects and product design to his ceramics, sculpture, and graphics.

John A. Frye
ID: 18590
Издательство: Design Media Publishing

“Where can your imagination take you?” renowned artist and vehicle designer John A. Frye answers in wondrous illustrations traversing varied terrain and time periods. Awe-inspiring vehicles, aircraft, and spacecraft speed and soar off the pages, inspiring and challenging artists to write their own rulebooks when designing and envisioning transportation design like never before.

Break away from the familiar motorized vehicles of the modern world by going well beyond what is expected and maximize visual motifs of sleekness and volume in “Chapter 1: Cars.” His spaceships and hovercraft in “Chapter 2: Ships and Flying Craft,” pull cues and details from real world airplanes and cars, and then playfully merge them with motifs of fanciful sci-fi mobility. With “Chapter 3: Autonomous Racing,” explore what happens when the driver is taken out of the equation in racecars — new forms emerge when the safety, space, and the visibility of a human occupant is no longer a factor. For fans of the largest vehicles on the road, “Chapter 4: Trucks and Big Rigs,” take the most everyday utilitarian vehicles and give them added edge, design, and style. Finally, with “Chapter 5: Other Extraordinary Vehicles,” the artist really flexes his creative muscles with unexpected and futuristic takes and sizes of robots, watercraft, and more.

Frye's enthusiasm and artistry comes through on every page, manifested in his sophisticated and often vibrant illustrations and especially his thoughtful reflections on different creative approaches developed over years of experience as a professional and as a teacher. "Unique ideas and thinking come from removing the burden of deeply logical thinking--shrugging off the shackles of critical realism," he writes. "Let your creativity loose on a regular basis and think like a kid with the horsepower of professional artistic skill."Let FryeWerk 2.0, Concept Vehicle Illustrations help you train yourself to more easily tap into that intense creative fuel source -- uninhibited childlike curiosity -- for more productive, passionate real-world project work and ongoing personal fulfillment.

Scott Robertson, Thomas Bertling
ID: 14456
Издательство: Design Studio Press

Scott Robertson explains how the human brain interprets the visual world around us, as well as the subject of visually communicating the form of an object in easy-to-understand, step-by-step lessons through the use of drawings, photography, and even 3D digital imagery that will enlighten and empower an artist.

This book is about the fundamentals of light, shadow and reflectivity; the focus is firmly on helping to improve visual understanding of the world around and on techniques for representing that world.

Rendering is the next step after drawing to communicate ideas more clearly. Building on what Scott Robertson and Thomas Bertling wrote about in How To Draw: Drawing and Sketching Objects and Environments from Your Imagination, this book shares everything the two experts know about how to render light, shadow and reflective surfaces.

This book is divided into two major sections: the first explains the physics of light and shadow. One will learn how to construct proper shadows in perspective and how to apply the correct values to those surfaces. The second section focuses on the physics of reflectivity and how to render a wide range of materials utilizing this knowledge.

Throughout the book, two icons appear that indicate either “observation” or “action.” This means the page or section is about observing reality or taking action by applying the knowledge and following the steps in creating your own work.

Similar to our previous book, How To Draw, this book contains links to free online rendering tutorials that can be accessed via the URL list or through the H2Re app.

About the Authors:

Scott Robertson has almost two decades of experience teaching how to design, draw, and render at the highest college level. He has authored or co-authored 11 books on design and concept art. In addition to books, he has co-produced over 40 educational DVDs with The Gnomon Workshop, of which nine feature his own lectures. For several years, Scott chaired the Entertainment Design department at Art Center College of Design. He frequently lectures around the world for various corporations, colleges, and through his own workshop brand, SRW. In addition to teaching, Scott has worked on a wide variety of projects ranging from vehicle and alien designs for the Hot Wheels animated series Battle Force Five, to theme park attractions such as the Men in Black ride in Orlando, Florida for Universal Studios. Some of his clients include the BMW subsidiary Design-works/USA, Bell Sports, Giro, Mattel Toys, Spin Master Toys, Patagonia, the feature film Minority Report, Nike, Rockstar Games, Sony Online Entertainment, Sony Computer Entertainment of America, Buena Vista Games, THQ, and Fiat to name just a few.

Thomas Bertling has an extensive background as a successful industrial designer and engineer, with a varied array of clients such as Disney, Samsung, and Whole Foods, and a diverse portfolio of completed products on the market, from state-of-the-art medical innovations to combat-ready military vehicles. This hands-on expertise gives him a distinct approach and remarkable edge in addition to being an acclaimed design educator. With substantial experience teaching all levels of perspective sketching and construction to both university students and corporate clients, he has created comprehensive and proven curricula rooted in practicality and real-world application. He currently serves as Director of Entertainment Design at Art Center College of Design as well as teaching several courses and training faculty members.
