Deb Schwartzkopf is a studio potter, instructor, and active community member of Seattle, Washington. She has taught at Ohio University, Massachusetts College of Art and Design, University of Washington, and University of Georgia’s study abroad program in Cortona. She was named Ceramics Monthly and Ceramic Arts Daily's 2019 Artist of the Year, one of the most visible awards in the field. Deb has worked as an artist in residence nationally and internationally at the Archie Bray Foundation (MT), Mudflat Studios (MA), The Clay Studio (PA), Pottery Northwest (WA), Watershed (ME), Sanbao in Jingdezhen, China, and the Residency for Ceramics in Berlin, Germany. Since 2002, Deb has also taught widely at top ceramics centers including Penland School of Craft, Gaya Ceramics Center (Indonesia), and IARE (France). Her artwork is included in collections such as the Kamm Teapot Foundation, San Angelo Museum, and the WA State Arts Collection, among others. She has been included in numerous publications including Ceramic Monthly, Pottery Making Illustrated, and Studio Potter Magazine; has contributed to Red Clay Rambler Podcasts; is an active founding member of Objective Clay; has served as the Director of the Washington Clay Arts Association; and is currently a board member at Pottery Northwest. About the Authors:

Kylie Johnson is a Brisbane-based ceramic artist, gallery owner, and writer. Over the past ten years, she has curated more than fifteen exhibitions of both Australian and Japanese artists in her studio space. Kylie has published two books of poetry and a collection of quotes from her ceramic work. Tiffany Johnson has spent her professional life in book production and publishing for over twenty years. During the same period she has been by her sister Kylie Johnson’s side, working on paper boat press ceramic exhibitions and projects.

The Galleria Borghese brings together an extraordinary collection of ancient and modern sculpture within a beautifully decorated villa. This volume, dedicated to modern sculpture (Late Renaissance to Baroque to Neoclassical), marks the start of a new general catalogue of the collection.

The introduction narrates the history of the collection, from its creation by Cardinal Scipione Borghese in the 17th century to its sale to the Italian Republic at the end of the 19th century. The entries are full of chronological details, new attributions, information on restorations and account for the different historical settings thanks to an accurate study of the inventory records of the villa. They include world-famous masterpieces by Algardi, Bernini and Canova among others. The sale to Napoleon of many of its Antique works of art (now in the Louvre) was key to the Borghese's commission of works of ancient inspiration, the analysis of which animates the pages of another section, based on the concepts of copy and remake.

The catalogue closes with a section on restoration, that gives an account of the fundamental role of 16- to 18th-century sculptors in the maintenance and transformation of the archaeological collection in relation to the villa's display requirements.

About the Authors:

Anna Coliva is considered to be among the foremost experts on the history and works of the Galleria Borghese, of which she was for a long time director (1991-2020). Her specialist studies concern in particular Roman and Emilian Mannerism and the 17th century, with particular reference to Bolognese painting and Roman patronage. She has dedicated essays and monographic works to Bernini and Caravaggio. Vittoria Brunetti received her doctorate at the Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa. She studies Roman Baroque sculpture between 17th and 18th centuries, with a particular focus in portraiture and collecting.

Melissa makes a variety of ash and celadon glazes and fires her pots in a gas reduction kiln. She teaches classes in handbuilding at intervals throughout the year, including at the famous Penland Art School and the North Carolina Pottery Center. She also operates an 8,000 square foot art cooperative called Southside Studios that houses studio space for 20 potters. Melissa  participates in shows in Boston, Philadelphia, and Chicago and exhibits her work in galleries from New York City to Fayetteville, Arkansas. Cristina Córdova is a contemporary artist and sculpting instructor whose work is collected around the world. She is featured in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian American Art Museum; The Colección Acosta de San Juan, Puerto Rico; the Mint Museum of Craft + Design; the Museum of Contemporary Art; and the Alfred Ceramic Art Museum, among others. She is the recipient of numerous grants and award, including NC Arts Council Fellowship Grant, a Virginia Groot Foundation Recognition Grant, several International Association of Art Critics of Puerto Rico awards, and in 2015 the prestigious United States Artist Fellowship award. Her work is widely featured in all major ceramics and arts media, including the covers of Ceramics Monthly, and was featured by Craft in America, on PBS, in their episode on Identity.

Cristina has taught and demonstrated around the world, though she focuses mostly on US locations. Her residencies, workshops, and classes include: Harvard University, the University of California, the University of Nebraska, the University of Georgia, the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, Ceramistas de Reñaca in Chile, the Australian National University in Canberra, Gaya Ceramics in Bali, Penland School of Crafts (NC), Haystack Mountain School (ME), Santa Fe Clay (NM), Mudfire (GA), Odyssey Center for Ceramics (NC), and Anderson Ranch (CO), among others.

While sculpture remained central to his artistic practice, Isamu Noguchi’s (1904–1988) interests and production spanned an exceptionally broad terrain that included furniture and lamps, stage sets for dance, plazas, courtyards — and gardens. Noguchi made no distinction between design, craft, and the so-called fine arts: in his view all of these could all be considered art should their aesthetic qualities sufficiently transcend those generated by the simple address of need.

Although his gardens include several of the twentieth century’s most iconic landscape designs and have received almost universal praise, Noguchi nonetheless occupies a place removed from the normal practice of landscape architecture. As an artist he relied more on intuition – bolstered by focused study where required – than on objective analysis, and he shaped his landscapes as sculpture, with space as their primary vehicle. To Noguchi landscape design was a spatial and formal art, and from his earliest environmental projects to the works of his later maturity, he succeeded in conceiving and constructing a series of remarkable places.

In this comprehensive and richly illustrated study of Noguchi’s gardens, noted landscape historian Marc Treib describes and critiques projects that date from his early unrealised projects for playgrounds and monuments to a large park in Sapporo, Japan, whose construction was completed only posthumously. The story begins with the discussion of Noguchi sculpture that relate in some way to actual landscapes, then moves to the dance set designs for Martha Graham, finally entering the realm of actual landscapes with his gardens for the Reader’s Digest offices in Tokyo and UNESCO House in Paris. Many more projects followed in the United States, Japan, and Israel.

Varying in their content and structure, several chapters collectively treat subjects such as landform, water, and the courtyard, while others focus on the major gardens monographically.
