This book references all the artist's periods and media: sculpture (plaster, bronze), paintings, drawings, prints… It will allow a comprehensive view of Alberto Giacometti's creation, from early works to the surrealist period, from the return to figuration to his work from models, and to the invention of the great post-war icons. Over 230 works are represented, including several masterpieces such as Spoon Woman (1927), The Invisible Object (1934-35), Woman with Chariot (1945), The Nose (1947), and Walking Man (1960).

Giacometti’s works are separated into fourteen original sections revealing the themes favoured by the artist - the representation of the head, the face, the female body, etc. The book is punctuated by seven essays written by leading art historians who dwell on the detours and questions that mark Alberto Giacometti's creative process, but also allow the reader to discover his relationship to loneliness, melancholy, and his hard work with his models: his wife Annette, his brother Diego, his close friends. This catalogue aims to introduce the reader to another Giacometti, the one who experiments with the limits of sculpture, and the formidable painter who also practices, alongside the portrait, the genres of landscape or still life.

From clay to kiln and all the techniques in-between, this book is an exploration into the techniques and processes of over forty-five working ceramicists.

Earth and fire represent the two elements that produce a ceramic object. Without the other they are simply components; together they create both practical objects and pieces of art. Working as both primer and inspiration, Earth & Fire explores the techniques, practices and tools of over forty-five working ceramicists.

Creating everything from wood-fired and fine porcelain wares; sculptured vases; everyday cups, bowls, and plates; to jewelry and wall pieces, these artists work in a wide range of styles and mediums to create their ceramics. Although the methods vary, the overall sentiment is that the earth and fire that the artists use to make their objects are the ultimate masters. Just when they think they know one thing, the clay, glaze and heat will teach them another. There will always be more to learn. Working with clay is, quite simply, humbling.

Written and compiled by Kylie Johnson and Tiffany Johnson, Earth & Fire captures the diverse beauty and utility of ceramics, demonstrating that clay doesn’t just get under your fingernails: it gets under your skin.

About the Authors:

Kylie Johnson is a Brisbane-based ceramic artist, gallery owner, and writer. Over the past ten years, she has curated more than fifteen exhibitions of both Australian and Japanese artists in her studio space. Kylie has published two books of poetry and a collection of quotes from her ceramic work. Tiffany Johnson has spent her professional life in book production and publishing for over twenty years. During the same period she has been by her sister Kylie Johnson’s side, working on paper boat press ceramic exhibitions and projects.

What makes a creative life? For an artist like Frances Palmer, it’s knitting all of one’s passions — all of one’s creativity — into the whole of life. And what an inspiration it is.

A renowned potter, an entrepreneur, a gardener, a photographer, a cook, a beekeeper, Palmer has over the course of three decades caught the attention not only of the countless people who collect and use her ceramics but also of designers and design lovers, writers, and fellow artists who marvel at her example. Now, in her first book, she finally tells her story, in her own words and images, distilling from her experiences lessons that will inspire a new generation of makers and entrepreneurs.

Life in the Studio is as beautiful and unexpected as Palmer’s pottery, as breathtakingly colorful as her celebrated dahlias, as intimate as the dinners she hosts in her studio for friends and family. There are insights into making pots — the importance of centering, the discovery that clay has a memory. Strategies for how to turn a passion into a business — the value to be found in collaboration, what it means to persevere, how to develop and stick to a routine that will sustain both enthusiasm and productivity. There are also step-by-step instructions (for throwing her beloved Sabine pot, growing dahlias, building an opulent flower arrangement). Even some of her most tried-and-true recipes.

The result is a portrait of a unique artist and a singularly generous manual on how to live a creative life.

About the Author:

Frances Palmer is a potter known for her handmade functional ceramics. Her pieces have been carried by Barneys New York, Bergdorf Goodman, Neue Galerie, Takashimaya, and the Philip Johnson Glass House, and featured in T: The New York Times Magazine, Vogue, Elle Decor, Martha Stewart Living, The World of Interiors, House & Garden, British House & Garden, and Veranda, among other publications. She lives and works in Weston, Connecticut.

The first-ever spomenik guidebook, with over 75 examples alongside map references and information on why they exist and who built them.

Spomenik’ the Serbo-Croat/Slovenian word for ‘monument’ – refers to a series of memorials built in Tito’s Republic of Yugoslavia from the 1960s-1990s, marking the horror of the occupation and the defeat of Axis forces during World War II. Hundreds were built across the country, from coastal resorts to remote mountains. Through these imaginative forms of concrete and steel, a classless, forward-looking, socialist society, free of ethnic tensions, was envisaged.

Instead of looking to the ideologically aligned Soviet Union for artistic inspiration, Tito turned to the west and works of abstract expressionism and minimalism. As a result, Yugoslavia was able to develop its own distinct identity through these brutal monuments, which were used as political tools to articulate Tito’s personal vision of a new tomorrow. Today, following the breakup of the country and the subsequent Yugoslav Wars of the 1990s, some have been destroyed or abandoned. Many have suffered the consequences of ethnic tensions – once viewed as symbols of hope they are now the focus of resentment and anger.

This book brings together the largest collection of spomeniks published to date. Each has been extensively photographed and researched by the author, to make this book the most comprehensive survey of this obscure and fascinating architectural phenomenon.

A fold-out map on the reverse of the dust jacket shows the exact location of each spomenik using GPS coordinates.

A magnificent catalogue of the V&A's collection of twentieth-century and contemporary British ceramics

Contemporary ceramicists working in Britain, including Rachel Kneebone, Grayson Perry and Edmund de Waal, are part of a broader international group of artists experimenting with clay, considering how it intersects and works in dialogue with other art forms and with culture at large. Recent experimentation with the medium owes much to the rapid evolution of ceramics into an expanded field, and to the work of mid- to late 20th-century potters and their reinvention of ceramics as a radical and contemporary art practice. The pioneering methods and rethinking of form in the work of exponents such as Bernard Leach, Michael Cardew, Lucie Rie, Hans Coper and Alan Caiger-Smith – whose reference points were drawn from East Asia, Africa, the ancient Mediterranean and the Middle East as much as from their own heritage – continue to influence and inspire contemporary makers. In his introductory essay, Alun Graves, Senior Curator at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, provides all lovers of ceramics – collectors, practitioners, historians and those interested in modern and contemporary art and crafts – with the historical context, documenting the medium’s shift into an expressive, and sometimes interventionist, art form. An extensive visual catalogue, Studio Ceramics is the primary reference for 20th-century and contemporary British studio ceramics, and a record of the national collection of British ceramics held at the V&A.

The book presents the extraordinary three-dimensional “live sculptures” by the Russian architect, designer, writer and artist.

Having some engineering experience, Klyukin was able to experiment and derive a concept of connecting steel sheets on a non-existent, speculative axis without any actual fasteners. The principle of mobility of each individual piece was the basis for this technological innovation. Each sculpture created without physical fasteners is easily assembled and disassembled. This new experience brought new satisfaction. One of the statuettes done using the “live sculpture” technique, the Golden Madonnina, was used as the official award during Milan Design Week in 2017, a kind of Oscar for designers.

Vasily Klyukin was born in Moscow in 1979. From 1995 to 2010, he was active in business; when he left business he moved to Monaco, where he took up writing, architecture, and design. In 2013, he published Designing Legends, an album of architectural concepts that contained fifty of his visions for future buildings such as towers, office buildings, museums, and opera houses. Klyukin is recognized by many for his pronounced individuality and the unique shapes of his buildings. He strives to make each building internationally recognizable and mark it as the symbol of the city, or even the country that hosts it. In 2016, he published a sci-fi novel, Collective Mind. This is a dystopia about the creation of artificial intelligence, a computer that uses human brain as fuel. The book has been translated into English and French and published around the world. The sequel to the novel is expected in 2019. Hollywood producer Peter D. Graves has optioned Collective Mind.

His main achievement is the live sculptures technique that he created in 2017 and that he uses to craft influential and memorable installations. His first solo exhibition of live sculptures is based on Dante Alighieri’s The Divine Comedy and is called

In Dante Veritas. Currently displayed at the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg, the collection of twenty-seven sculptures will soon be traveling to Moscow, then the Vatican, Venice, Miami, and New York.

“My sculptures are a symbiosis of engineering and meaning.” —Vasily Klyukin

Marc Treib

Видавництво: Oro Editions

While sculpture remained central to his artistic practice, Isamu Noguchi’s (1904–1988) interests and production spanned an exceptionally broad terrain that included furniture and lamps, stage sets for dance, plazas, courtyards — and gardens. Noguchi made no distinction between design, craft, and the so-called fine arts: in his view all of these could all be considered art should their aesthetic qualities sufficiently transcend those generated by the simple address of need.

Although his gardens include several of the twentieth century’s most iconic landscape designs and have received almost universal praise, Noguchi nonetheless occupies a place removed from the normal practice of landscape architecture. As an artist he relied more on intuition – bolstered by focused study where required – than on objective analysis, and he shaped his landscapes as sculpture, with space as their primary vehicle. To Noguchi landscape design was a spatial and formal art, and from his earliest environmental projects to the works of his later maturity, he succeeded in conceiving and constructing a series of remarkable places.

In this comprehensive and richly illustrated study of Noguchi’s gardens, noted landscape historian Marc Treib describes and critiques projects that date from his early unrealised projects for playgrounds and monuments to a large park in Sapporo, Japan, whose construction was completed only posthumously. The story begins with the discussion of Noguchi sculpture that relate in some way to actual landscapes, then moves to the dance set designs for Martha Graham, finally entering the realm of actual landscapes with his gardens for the Reader’s Digest offices in Tokyo and UNESCO House in Paris. Many more projects followed in the United States, Japan, and Israel.

Varying in their content and structure, several chapters collectively treat subjects such as landform, water, and the courtyard, while others focus on the major gardens monographically. Accompanied by stunning images from the archives of Isamu Noguchi Foundation and Garden Museum archives and the author’s own photographs, the story of Noguchi’s Gardens: Landscape as Sculpture will reward those interested in landscape architecture, art history, garden design, and art more broadly.

About the Author:

Marc Treib Professor of Architecture Emeritus at the University of California, Berkeley, is a historian and critic of landscape and architecture who has published widely on modern and historical subjects in the United States, Japan, and Scandinavia. Books published by ORO Editions include Landscapes of Modern Architecture; Austere Gardens; The Landscapes of Georges Descombes: Doing Almost Nothing; and Thinking a Modern Landscape Architecture, West and East; and more recently The Aesthetics of Contemporary Planting Design and Serious Fun: The Landscapes of Claude Cormier.
