The most comprehensive presentation of the George Loudon collection of late 19th- and early 20th-century scientific artefacts as well as paintings and other works of art. The book is based on the exhibition A Cabinet of Wonders at the Palazzo Grimani, Venice.

A Cabinet of Wonders: a Celebration of Art in Nature is the most comprehensive presentation of the George Loudon collection of late 19th- and early 20th-century scientific artefacts to date. Today, this ever-growing collection numbers more than 200 pieces, including teaching models, anatomical specimens, taxidermy, books, prints and drawings. These objects, largely scientific but exquisitely made, are crafted from glass, wax, minerals, papier-mâché, fabric, ivory and more.

The book presents the works currently on display at the Museo di Palazzo Grimani in Venice, former residence of Giovanni Grimani, one of the city’s foremost collectors. The palace is undergoing its own renaissance as Grimani’s collection of Greek and Roman antiquities, bequeathed to the city of Venice following his death in 1593, was returned in 2019 and reinstalled in the building.

With around 200 works, the book focuses on the theme of collecting. In the first two chapters, running parallel to the exhibits of the Loudon collection, are objects arranged in the style of a 16th or 17th-century Venetian cabinet. These include not just “curiosities” but also Venetian enamel and maiolica, paintings by the likes of Tintoretto, Titian and Veronese, alongside loans from international institutions such as Vienna’s MAK Museum of Applied Arts. The book also draws connections between Loudon’s sensitivity and that of a 16th-century humanist such as Grimani; although separated by centuries, they were both motivated by a profound love of nature.

George Loudon is a collector and patron who has amassed a renowned and unique collection of objects relating to the study and teaching of life sciences. His collection is inspired by the scientific breakthroughs made from the Enlightenment to the 19th and early 20th centuries.

The iconic Dome of the Cathedral of Florence, the largest masonry vault in the world, was built by Filippo Brunelleschi between 1420 and 1436. More than 100 years later, between 1572 and 1579, the vault was decorated with frescos by the artists Giorgio Vasari and Federico Zuccari depicting the Last Judgment. The Galleria Borghese brings together an extraordinary collection of ancient and modern sculpture within a beautifully decorated villa. This volume, dedicated to modern sculpture (Late Renaissance to Baroque to Neoclassical), marks the start of a new general catalogue of the collection.

The introduction narrates the history of the collection, from its creation by Cardinal Scipione Borghese in the 17th century to its sale to the Italian Republic at the end of the 19th century. The entries are full of chronological details, new attributions, information on restorations and account for the different historical settings thanks to an accurate study of the inventory records of the villa. They include world-famous masterpieces by Algardi, Bernini and Canova among others. The sale to Napoleon of many of its Antique works of art (now in the Louvre) was key to the Borghese's commission of works of ancient inspiration, the analysis of which animates the pages of another section, based on the concepts of copy and remake.

The catalogue closes with a section on restoration, that gives an account of the fundamental role of 16- to 18th-century sculptors in the maintenance and transformation of the archaeological collection in relation to the villa's display requirements.

About the Authors:

Anna Coliva is considered to be among the foremost experts on the history and works of the Galleria Borghese, of which she was for a long time director (1991-2020). Her specialist studies concern in particular Roman and Emilian Mannerism and the 17th century, with particular reference to Bolognese painting and Roman patronage. She has dedicated essays and monographic works to Bernini and Caravaggio. Vittoria Brunetti received her doctorate at the Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa. She studies Roman Baroque sculpture between 17th and 18th centuries, with a particular focus in portraiture and collecting.

Investigations by Sara Penco stem from the insightful finding of the absence of a key figure in the Sistine Chapel’s Last Judgement fresco. Prior to this illuminating research, Mary Magdalene was not unequivocally identified within Michelangelo’s masterpiece. Father Pfeiffer, with whom Penco establishes an inescapable dialectic, had already hypothesised the presence of Mary Magdalene in the fresco, but it is the scholar, for the first time in these pages, who convincingly justifies her identification. Mary Magdalene is closely connected to the salient episodes in the life of Jesus. The author rightly wonders, therefore, how it is possible that a figure so central to the biblical narrative and the Christian imagination could have been excluded from the depiction of the Parousia. This observation gives rise to an accurate reflection on the iconography of the saint and the Judgement, in relation to the sacred texts and in relation to Michelangelo’s poetics and production. About the Author:

Sara Penco is an art restorer, whose work includes the restoration of the frescoes by Filippino Lippi in the Chapel Carafa in Santa Maria Sopra Minerva, of some of the ceilings in the Chamber of Deputies of the Italian Parliament, restorations in the Villa Algardi, and in the interiors of Villa Pamphili, all in Rome. She is the creator of the Smarticon method, a patented technique for classification, cataloguing, and tracking valuable assets, particularly works from the art world. She has contributed to the preservation of prestigious works and written several unpublished works for the academic world, that were subsequently the subject of further studies, exhibitions, and publications. Sara has participated in numerous national and international conferences focusing on the discovery of newly uncovered works and on innovative technologies for the preservation of Cultural Heritage.

The stained glass collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum is the largest in the world, making it possible to chart the development of the art in detail from the middle of the twelfth century to about 1550.

He is the author of East London; The Company of Artists: The Origins of the Royal Academy of Arts in London; and The National Gallery: A Short History, among other titles.
