Contemporary World Architecture presents a comprehensive survey of international architecture at the end of the twentieth century and offers a critical study of the social, cultural and political changes that are shaping the built environment today.
Continual advances in building technology, shifting demographics and increasing levels of global communications are all having an impact on architectural ideology and building types as architects prepare for the new millennium. The book is divided into thirteen chapters, each section organized typologically by building function: Visual Arts, Performance, Learning, Religion, Consumerism, Living, Workplace, Industry, Leisure, Transport, Sport, Civic Realm and Towers. It presents over 660 recent public and private buildings by many of the world’s key protagonists, and examines the evolution of new architectural solutions from the late 1960s to the end of the century and beyond. A highly illustrated and wide-ranging critique, Contemporary World Architecture will provide a stimulating and invaluable reference book for architects everywhere.
As populations grow, where and how we live is a major concern. Architects spend their time addressing the issue of housing, and converting spaces is often a more satisfactory solution than building from scratch. This book shows that with a bit of imagination all sorts of buildings can be converted into homes.
Four chapters examine 36 conversions of rural, urban and civic buildings, lofts and industrial spaces, and radical one-offs. With each case study the author asks: what does one leave intact, what does one rip out and what is one forbidden to change by planning regulations? The budget, the materials used and the way they impact upon surroundings are also examined and assessed. Varied projects from around the world include the archetypal glamorous New York loft, high-tech-meets-rural barns in Germany and Norway, an electrical box in Italy and a striking church conversion in Australia.

Alex Hanbuckers belongs to a draft of new European top chefs, who respect basic ingredients, yet prefer an extremely creative approach.
In this book, he creates culinary combinations that will ensure the same experience at home as at his restaurant. Dishes that do not necessarily involve pyrotechnics or force the reader to go and hunt for an expensive delicatessen. No, these two books show the gastronomy of the twenty-first century in a truly innovative way.
The first book emphasises the practical steps one needs to take in the kitchen in order to achieve a maximum result. Often, three or four steps are all that is necessary.
The second book demonstrates a number of culinary tours de force in a stunningly beautiful way.
"Cool Containers" pumps up the action in pots. Here is an innovative approach to container gardening, the first book to combine the cool style of modernism with plantings that really work. Throughout, the emphasis is on reality - real containers with established plantings in specific locations - combined with a sense of adventure. "Cool Containers" shows how understanding a location's particular set of constraints will enable you to choose the perfect container and plant species that thrive in it.
There's a city roof garden without any protections from the elements where tough concrete planters, heavy enough to stay put in even the fiercest storm, are filled with maritime plants chosen to withstand drying winds, lashing rain, burning hot sun and airborne pollution. A damp and gloomy basement garden is home to a pot of dellcate ferns and woodland flowering plants. There are schemes for all sites, whether kind or cruel.
