Emily Henson
ID: 10322
Издательство: Ryland Peters & Small / CICO books

At its heart, the modern rustic look celebrates the fabric of a home, from the roof beams to the brickwork.

This style revels in earthy colours and rich textures; in natural materials such as wood and stone; and the ruggedly handsome bones of a building. In this book, stylist Emily Henson and writer Joanna Simmons first lead you through the Elements of the Modern Rustic look.

Pure Rustic elegantly blends clean lines with muted shades of grey. Bohemian Rustic mixes texture and pattern with lush colour, while Pop Rustic teams raw wood with pops of neon and tongue-in-cheek artworks. Retro Rustic, meanwhile, brings a relaxed feel, showcasing beaten-up leather armchairs and brick floors.

In Details, textiles, furniture, fabric and display are explored, while Living Spaces shows how Modern Rustic style translates beautifully to every room in the house.

About the Author:

Emily Henson has recently returned to London after many years spent living in LA. Her career has encompassed store display and merchandising for Anthropologie, set design, and interior design for private clients. Emily lives in East London and this is her first book.

Vittorio Magnago Lampugnani
ID: 18254
Издательство: DOM Publishers

The orthodox concept of the Modern, as it was passed down from the 1920s to the post-war era, has been in a state of crisis for quite some time. This is particularly visible in the fields of urban planning, architecture, and design. Theorists and practitioners have either fiercely defended it as a crowning historical achievement to be upheld and further cultivated, or dismissively rejected it as a short-lived and outdated episode that needs to be replaced with something different and new.

Architectural theorist and practitioner Vittorio Magnago Lampugnani suggests a third option: that we reformulate our understanding of the Modern, continuing to pursue its original social and humanist ambitions while radically re-examining its ideological, political, social, technical, functional, economic, ecological, and aesthetic assumptions. Our world, which continues to be shaken by dreadful wars, is also being sapped and polluted by our thoughtlessness and our greed. The capitalist compulsion to turn everything into a commodity has led to needless production and consumption, and we are both victims and accomplices of this predicament. The consumerist frenzy has brought completely new forms of exploitation and exacerbated the unjust inequalities between different parts of our world. Starting from these premises, the author puts forward a new design approach that strives for – and is defined by – durability.

This is an approach that rejects the frivolous waste of resources and superficial proliferation of images that have become commonplace today. It offers an alternative to the contemporary fixation on spectacles, both hollow and dangerous, and instead calls for measured restraint and substantial simplicity.

Phu Hoang, Rachely Rotem
ID: 16653
Издательство: Hatje Cantz

Published by the interdisciplinary design studio MODU, this "field guide" explores threshold spaces between the interior and the exterior. What are experiences between architecture and the environment? Where can the boundaries between the interior and the urban be drawn? What role does the climate crisis play in this? For their research and design projects, Phu Hoang and Rachely Rotem look at three major cities on different continents: New York, Rome, and Tokyo. MODU leaves behind the binary idea of inside and outside and rather understands architecture as an extension of the environment. Thus, it imagines a hybrid of urban space, architecture, and interior space. The book explores the different geographic locations and presents their own design projects.

MODU is a Brooklyn, New York-based design studio working in architecture, urbanism, and interior design. It is led by Phu Hoang and Rachely Rotem and focuses on thinking architecture, urbanism, and the environment together. In 2017, they won the Rome Prize.

Steve Lawrence, Benjamin Stæhli

Издательство: Park Books

The name Montessori is widely and inextricably associated with an entirely child-centered and careful pedagogy and education of children. Maria Montessori (1870-1952) was an Italian physician, reform educator, and philosopher whose ideas and work have remained influential throughout the world ever since the 1910s. Her educational concept covers entire development from infancy to young adulthood. It is based on the image of the child as a “builder of his or her self” and therefore uses for the first time the form of open teaching and free work in a prepared learning environment.

Montessori schools became trend-setting educational institutions early on, and their concept strongly reflects in their architecture and equipment. Montessori Architecture is the first book that comprehensively addresses architectural design, construction, the use of materials in and the furnishing of educational spaces according to Montessori’s ideas. The book’s first part explores spatial and design principles that make up good kindergarten and school buildings. In the second part, nine case studies are featured in detail through photographs, plans, and concise texts. These examples are located in Europe (Netherlands, Belgium, Great Britain) as well as in tropical countries (Burkina Faso, Tanzania, Bangladesh, Sir Lanka). Thus, this highly illustrative volume offers practical advice and a wealth of information that is of utmost importance for the design of school buildings in general.

About the Authors:

Steve Lawrence is a British architect and consultant on sports infrastructure, specialising in the architectural concepts of Montessori education. Benjamin Stæhli is a Swiss architect and photographer who has also worked in Ethiopia and Singapore, and who has been engaged in architectural concepts of Montessori education for many years.

A vibrant new collection of the best maximalist interiors from today’s top designers.

Rooms of jewellike color and glorious pattern. Enchanting lacquered ceilings and geometric floors. Brilliantly massed collections of furniture, objects, and art. Although maximalism has always had a place in interior design — practiced by noted decorators such as Dorothy Draper, Sister Parish, and Mario Buatta — today it is bigger than ever. Thanks to its contemporary practitioners, rooms rich with color, pattern, and everything else have exploded onto the design scene in recent years. More Is More Is More celebrates the best of this work with page after page of lushly photographed vivid inspiration and ideas.

Each of the five chapters in More Is More Is More begins with an essay on a theme — color, pattern, surfaces, elements, and layering — followed by dozens of showstopping rooms from acclaimed, award-winning designers, including Ken Fulk, Steven Gambrel, Kelly Behun, Mark D. Sikes, Pierce and Ward, Bunny Williams, Corey Damen Jenkins, and Redd Kaihoi. The images are enhanced by commentary from the designers describing their process for creating the room and offering insight on how to incorporate the ideas at home.

With a design as lavishly maximalist as its subject, More Is More Is More is a perfect gift for design fans.

Giuppi Petromarchi
ID: 15480
Издательство: ACC Art Books

Morocco in Bloom is a celebration of the beauty and richness of Moroccan flora. Author Giuppi Pietromarchi shares her deep-rooted passion for the designs and plants of the contemporary Moroccan garden. The famous Jardin Majorelle in Marrakech features extensively, its rich palatte of dazzling flowers and deep Majorelle Blue illustrated with a magnificent array of photographs. The garden was rediscovered and restored by Yves Saint-Laurent and Pierre Berge. Legend tells us that the first garden was born at the foot of a tree. As a mark of respect, the area around it was swept, and so it became sacred. Gardens – places where nature is imitated and ordered by human intervention – have been a part of history since the days of ancient Mesopotamia. Harmony is the key component, and this book invokes this harmony on every page.

Illustrated with a magnificent array of photos and antique botanical prints, Morocco in Bloom is more than just a celebration of Moroccan flora. It is also a practical manual, dedicated to the cultivation, creation and maintenance of southern Mediterranean gardens. The author’s words will resonate with any garden lover based in the broader Mediterranean Basin, from Spain to Greece, Provence to Tunisia. The book has been composed in the style of an almanac, guiding the reader through the year month by month. Each chapter provides vital advice on how to plant, prune and care for the most beautiful and rare plants in the Mediterranean climate region.

- A beautifully illustrated reference book for any gardener working in the Mediterranean climate
- Intersperses important tips on plant care and garden design with stunning photography
- Laid out in an accessible month-by-month 'almanac' style
- Featuring the famous Jardin Majorelle in Marrakech, the garden was rediscovered and restored by Yves Saint-Laurent and Pierre Berge

About the Author:

Giuppi Petromarchi is a renowned Italian landscape designer, a specialist in Mediterranean botany and the creator of numerous gardens in Tuscany and elsewhere. She has authored many books on the history of Italian gardens and on Mediterranean flora, including the lauded botanical text for The Gardens of Ninfa, and has also regularly contributed articles to gardening magazines. From 1986-1989 she lived in Rabat, where her husband was the Italian Ambassador to Morocco. It was then that she discovered the rich beauty of the Moroccan garden. Giulio Pietromarchi began his work as an assistant photographer in Rome, aged 16. That year he met Niki de Saint Phalle, who, having seen his work, asked him to document her Tarot Garden in Tuscany. His photographs span the 27 years it took to realise the project. Their long collaboration led him to document the artist's work around the world, resulting in many publications. He began his film career in 1983 as a director of photography. His filmography includes more than sixty films and documentaries.

Nancy Braithwaite, Foreword by Dara Caponigro
ID: 16355
Издательство: Rizzoli

Interior designer Nancy Braithwaite’s long-awaited first book is a striking tutorial in the power of simplicity in design. In the world of interior design, Nancy Braithwaite is known for her single-minded devotion to the principle that has guided her work for more than forty years: simplicity. Braithwaite’s work is luxuriously minimalist, its beauty inextricably tied to its Shaker-like purity. While her work varies from art deco to country, the underlying rules remain the same: every element should strive to be simple and powerful without compromise, and every room must have a level of power that comes from commanding scale, repetition of elements, subtleties of color, or the sheer beauty of forms. In Braithwaite’s world, excess is not opulent. Simplicity is opulent. Braithwaite takes the reader deep into her singular vision. Divided into five sections, the book begins with her manifesto on simplicity and the aspects of design used to achieve it, including architecture, scale, color, texture, pattern, and composition. She then presents three categories of style — country, classic, and contemporary — and explains and illustrates each with iconic rooms from her portfolio. Finally, she presents several houses as case studies, displaying the power of these principles in action and emphasizing the importance of craftsmanship in design, from a stunning modern seaside retreat on Kiawah Island, South Carolina, to her unforgettable country house in Atlanta.

About the Authors:

Nancy Braithwaite started her acclaimed Atlanta interior design firm in 1969. Over her forty-plus-year career, her work has graced the pages of numerous shelter magazines. Dara Caponigro is the former editor-in-chief of Veranda and the founding editor of Domino.
