Nancy Goslee Power

Издательство: Abrams

200 color photographs and 25 plans

Nancy Power is to landscape what Frank Gehry is to architecture, or Bunny Williams to interiors - a master, a visionary, a seasoned professional at the very pinnacle of her craft. The designs Power creates - whether for parklands, playgrounds, or private sanctuaries - reflect the meticulous attention she pays to each place’s particularity and to the desires and living patterns of those who will use and enjoy her gardens.
From residential gardens in Beverly Hills and Malibu to street planning for downtown Los Angeles and play zones for the Pasadena Children’s Museum, the selection of Power’s work in this beautiful book reveals her multidimensional aesthetic. Her approach can range from the lavishly leafy to the meditatively restrained, from the comfortably homey to the superlatively (though always quirkily) formal. But no matter what the look, no matter who the client, each of her projects reminds us of the power that gardens have to refresh the body, center the mind, and liberate the spirit.

About the author
Nancy Goslee Power is a celebrated garden designer based in Santa Monica, California. She has spent the last 30 years in the field of design, first as an interior designer in New York, then as West Coast editor for House Beautiful and as contributing editor to Food & Wine. For the last twenty years, she has been passionately involved in garden design. Her firm, Nancy Goslee Power & Associates, has designed countless private landscapes in the United States, Australia, France, and Germany.

Founded in 1999 by Joe Powers and Jeffery Brown, Powers Brown Architecture is still a relatively young firm. Still, it has achieved notoriety with an impressive aray of awards for architecture, urban design and interior design.

This book examines the firm's quest to explore the separation of form and image by exploiting the forces that produce the status quo. With each project, the firm strives to comment on, heighten reaction to, and question the perceived cultural landscape.

Among the featured projects are the METRO Light Rail Facility in Houston, the Resident Agents office building for the FBI and McAllen and the RTRON Corporate Headquarters in Stafford, all recently completed in Texas. Introduction by Michael Rotondi.

This book aims to be a portfolio of ideas that showcases houses from all over the world, designed by contemporary, international architects and interior designers.

Each project uses specific materials or concepts that stand out from the rest of its design. Throughout this book, we feature houses made of concrete, stone, brick, metal, wood and lightweight or recycled materials, which have become the hallmark of the project. Sometimes this choice of material was based on the geographic region and climate: wood plus insulation are used more often in colder climates, while tile, concrete and stone are more commonly used in warmer climates. Furthermore, the illustrations are accompanied by practical interior design tips that will help readers create their own style and personality.

Prairie Skyscraper traces the history and evolution of Wright's recently restored nineteen-story-skyscraper masterwork, which takes its place beside the S.C. Johnson Wax Research Tower as one of Wright's only two vertical structures-and, at 221 feet tall-his largest.

Built as a multi-use skyscraper in 1956, the building is now a luxury hotel and arts center, featuring collections of the works of Bruce Goff and Frank Lloyd Wright, and soon a new museum facility designed by Zaha Hadid.

Now, with all-new colour photography, we are given access to this extraordinary architectural gem and the Wright-designed furnishings custom made for it.

The amazing story of the prefabricated house. Your brand new home, delivered on a trailer

A Prefab is a mass-produced house, constructed in a factory and assembled on-site in a few days or weeks. Once regarded as a cheap, easy solution for urgent housing problems, the prefab has evolved to become a synonym for ambitious design and sophisticated detailing solutions.

The amazing history of prefabricated houses started in England in the 1830s with a building kit for emigrants moving to Australia. Even today, prefabricated houses provide a high percentage of living spaces in many countries of the world. This book covers prefabs from the USA via Europe to Asia and Africa, giving insight into the various industrially prefabricated components, the difficulties of delivery to the building site, and the intricacies of assembly and completion. As well as tracing the liaison between modernism and industrialization that evolved to produce the latest prefabricated solutions, it also features a unique compilation of one-off prefabricated houses by well known international architects, as well as successful dwellings manufactured off-site for everyday modern living.

Readers will also find contact details for relevant suppliers and manufacturers.

This volume features some of the best examples of prefabricated residential architecture. With numerous examples from recent times, it is evidence of a growing trend in the construction industry which, through harnessing the benefits of prefabricated buildings, has been able to achieve ever greater control over building processes while reducing costs and the impact of construction on the environment. Gone is the statement that prefabricated homes are more impersonal and less attractive than their brick and mortar counterparts. With over 500 illustrations, plans and elevations, the book presents the most effective solutions in contemporary prefabricated architecture, demonstrating that construction which is more economical and ecological is possible.

This book presents 25 international examples of prefabricated architecture in a contemporary context. This book shows around 25 international houses that are based on modular and prefabrication systems. All of them have ecological advantages in comparison to standard construction systems, since they represent a more effective use of resources and a reduction of construction time and therewith costs. All houses are built in factories, carried by road and assembled on site. Thus, building materials can be used more economically and very few refuse is produced during construction. Due to the actual spread of technologies and construction typologies, the international prefabrication industry can deliver up-to-date houses, aesthetically modern, and with an average rank of prizes from very cheap solutions to more exclusive ones, depending on the main material used (wood, steel, galvanised aluminum and concrete).

Prefabrication offers a simple path to the green home of your dreams, and in her latest book, Prefabulous author Sheri Koones highlights the many ways of using prefabrication to create almost-off-the-grid homes - houses that are not only environmentally friendly but often operate at nearly zero annual energy cost.

As energy costs continue to rise, the almost-off-the-grid house proves its worth.

Prefabulous + Almost Off the Grid profiles more than 30 of the most energy-efficient homes in the United States, and this hardworking guide reveals how homeowners can achieve similar results with floor plans, the latest, most efficient technologies, and multiple images of the exterior and interior of each home.
