The austere facades that line the labyrinthine streets of Morocco's ancient walled neighborhoods reveal almost nothing of the luminous residences within. The Villas and Riads of Morocco lifts the veil on these secret paradises, from fantastic palaces in Fez and Essaouira to middle-class riads in Marrakech to converted casbahs in the southern oases. With more than 200 stunning photographs, this beautiful volume takes us behind the scenes to explore a side of Morocco that is largely hidden to outsiders.

The book showcases exquisite interiors that combine rich materials such as cedar and marble; luxurious carpets and textiles; filigree carving and other handiwork; and vibrant color palettes. Also featured is the remarkable mosaicwork found especially in the central courtyard gardens and patios that form the heart of the Moroccan house. Accompanying these sumptuous views is a vivid history of the country's residential architecture and its fascinating mix of Andalusian, Arab, and Saharan influences. The Villas and Riads of Morocco not only offers a feast for the eyes but also illuminates an entire culture. AUTHOR BIO: Corinne Verner is a cultural anthropologist who lives in Marrakech. She is also a scriptwriter and has written a documentary film series for television. Cécile Tréal and Jean-Michel Ruiz are photojournalists and members of the Gamma and Hoa-Qui agencies. They have spent many years in Casablanca and have collaborated on several publications on Morocco, Madagascar, and the Maghreb.

This book marries Stafford Cliff’s unerring eye with the remarkable photography of Gilles de Chabaneix to present a catalogue of opportunities for getting the best out of a life by and on the sea.

Seaside Architecture holiday villas in France; stone cottages in Scottish fishing villages; beach huts in Mexico; cabins in the Caribbean; new apartment developments in California.
The Extended Aspect how seaside and seafront dwellers have approached the problem of linking homes with the sea: terraces, decking, jetties, platforms and private beaches.
Seaside Colours & Materials looks at the creative use of the colours, materials and textures we traditionally associate with the sea: whites, blues, greens, bleached wood, pebbled effects, dappled glass.
Washed Up looks at opportunities to use the rich pickings of the seashore and coastal waters to practical and decorative effect – the flotsam and the fruits of the sea.
Life Afloat is a sequence of images of the ultimate experiences of living by the sea: from houses actually built out over the water to life aboard private boats.

Every opportunity to make cross-cultural comparisons and connections is taken and all sections are fully cross-referenced and indexed, to give a dynamic compilation of solutions to creating one’s own ideal place by the sea.

Beyond and behind the life of the streets lie the private spaces – interiors and rooms where the tastes and aspirations of individuals are reflected in the design and arrangement of objects set among different colours, textures, materials and finishes.

Cross-cultural comparisons and connections are made throughout this wonderful book, giving a truly international view of the city experience, and creating a compilation of inspirational ideas for stylish urban living.

City Homes looks at city-dwelling throughout the world.
City Spaces focuses on the details of city living: the places we devote to cooking, eating and sleeping.
City Surfaces is a study of interior decoration: colour, texture and materials.
City Detail demonstrates how even restricted spaces can be made inviting: arrangements of art and objects; ‘cabinets of curiosities’; storage space; external decoration.
City Life is an amazing photo essay of cityscapes around the world: buildings, street life, communities.

The design of new homes or refurbishment projects for existing properties, with construction costs bordering on or even beneath estimated market values, might well turn out to be an achievement worthy of even the most astute architect. Funds may well be lacking for costly materials and finishes but there is always room for improvement in the way simple materials are able to be transformed into something way beyond the sum of its parts.

Of all the materials on this planet, wood is the most beloved. Heavy wooden timbers artfully crafted into a sturdy house frame held together with mortise and tenon joinery delight the eye and warm the spirit. Over 200 striking color photos and more than 100 line drawings introduce the reader to the advantages of merging traditional timber frame construction with modern, conventional building materials to create stunning hybrid homes for the twenty-first century. These homes blend the beauty of wood and the comfort of conventional building materials.

The engaging text provides a detailed history of timber frame construction, details the range of choices available in timber frame hybrid construction, and provides a sweeping photographic essay of fifty building projects representing a wide range of approaches to configurations, styles, surfaces, finishes, and budgets.

English Heritage Buildings won their spurs in the restoration of old beamed roofs and historic half-timbered houses. Thanks to this experience the company can respond quickly to the continually growing demand for new, comfortable structures with a traditional oak frame and softwood weatherboarding. The new buildings are often multifunctional and can be used as a home office, garage, pool house, guest accommodation, covered terrace, shop or garden shed, as well as many other uses.

The oak roof trusses are constructed using traditional models and with centuries-old craftsmen's techniques. These buildings are durable and charming; they are made to measure to the client s wishes.

Under the management of Peter Pollet and Koen Bouteligier English Heritage Buildings have set up an independent associated company to launch these buildings on the continent as well.
English Heritage Buildings oak-framed buildings are so beautiful that they immediately attract the eye. They link the past with the present, the noblest of building traditions with the modern way of living, working and relaxation. Timber Framed Buildings displays a number of these achievements. The author, Ivo Pauwels tells the story of this centuries-old building technique and brings back the forgotten knowledge of the materials of roof trusses, pantiles, thatch, softwood and oak. In your mind's eye you can see the old carpenters back at work. Leading photographer Jan Verlinde was able to take most of the photographs in this book on the continents, but also found his inspiration in England.
