Living material. You’ll be amazed what wood can do

As soon as the first men bravely moved out of their protective caves, they surely built protective structures out of wood. The ultimate renewable resource for architecture is thus the oldest, but also the most modern of materials. Thanks to computer-driven design and manufacturing techniques, wood can be cut and carved in the most astonishing new ways. Such innovative contributors to the work published in this volume as the German professor Achim Menges are showing the way to the creation of complex, almost living wood structures. Others like the young architects from WMR who are based in Santiago, Chile, show just how it is possible to build a dramatic two-story wood cabin overlooking the Pacific for just $ 30,000. Or imagine how an innovative polyurethane-coated wood canopy can cover and renew a whole area of the historic city of Seville (Metropol Parasol by Jürgen Mayer H.).

Philip Jodidio (born 1954) studied art history and economics at Harvard, and edited Connaissance des Arts for over 20 years. His books include TASCHEN’s Architecture Now! series, and monographs on Tadao Ando, Norman Foster, Richard Meier, Jean Nouvel, and Zaha Hadid. He is internationally renowned as one of the most popular writers on the subject of architecture.

Надо сказать, что сегодня строительство домов из древесины в Соединенных Штатах Америки очень популярно. Во-первых, применение экологически чистого природного материала и интеграция здания в красивый окружающий ландшафт значительно повышают качество жизни.

Во-вторых, обращение, как правило, к историческим, рустикальным мотивам в оформлении фасадов и интерьеров означает для американца XXI столетия возвращение к традициям, истокам, к временам, когда первые переселенцы и покорители бескрайних просторов новых земель строили свои жилища на лоне первозданной природы. Так появляются загородные имения, где дизайнерские «воспоминания» о быте ковбоев, охотников, владельцев рисовых плантаций воплощаются в искусной работе с деревом.

Мы отобрали самые интересные и оригинальные проекты ведущих строительных и дизайнерских компаний США, специализирующихся именно в деревянном домостроении. Коттеджи, ранчо, шале, шато, усадьбы и виллы возведены в основном на северо-западе, северо-востоке, востоке и юго-востоке страны, в штатах, названия которых словно сошли со страниц увлекательных приключенческих романов: Монтана, Орегон, Юта, Теннесси, Вашингтон... А названия статей — «Вблизи оленьей тропы», «Орлиное гнездо», «Усадьба у Чёрной реки», «Жилище на холме», «Утиная охота» и так далее — символизируют необыкновенно живописное природное окружение всех этих построек.

В 2013 году Премия Архиwood проходит уже в 4-й раз. Это событие, учрежденное компанией HONKA и pr-агентством «Правила общения», ставит своей целью пропаганду дерева как идеального материала для cтроительства, настолько же выразительного, насколько экологичного, настолько же модного, насколько экономичного, настолько же традиционного, насколько актуального.
