Nouvel vague. France's leading architect

Jean Nouvel, the winner of the 2008 Pritzker Prize, is widely regarded as France’s most original and important contemporary architect. From 1967 to 1970 he assisted influential architects Claude Parent and Paul Virilio, before creating his own practice in Paris. His first widely acclaimed project was the Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris (1981–87). Since then he has completed the Lyon Opera House and the Fondation Cartier, Paris.

His major completed projects since 2000 include the Culture and Convention Center in Lucerne, Switzerland, the spectacular Agbar Tower in Barcelona, the Quai Branly Museum in Paris, the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and the Hotel Sofitel Vienna Stephansdom with shopping mall. Jean Nouvel was the 2001 recipient of the RIBA Royal Gold Medal for Architecture. In his citation, Peter Cook said of Nouvel: "In an age of blandness, imitation, or doubt, his work shines through as having both clarity and finesse, originality and lyricism."

Josep Lluнs Mateo is one of Spain's most influential architects in architecture today. This book brings together his recent projects, his influences, his references together with material from interviews and a wealth of images. It is, in a nutshell, his work philosophy. Conversations, reflections and projects completed in the last five years are presented as realities and actions, interpreted through this concept, which can be contemplated as infinity of individual forms of contacting with reality and acting upon it. For Josep Lluнs Mateo, the crux of this work is to analyse, from the perspective of his unique work, the state of issues and situations today in architecture and to interact accordingly with exterior space.

With increased attention to sustainability and environmental concerns, landscape architects now lead teams of urban planners and architects in developing new outdoor space and reconfiguring existing designs. As the preeminent landscape architecture firm in the United States, Olin is at the forefront of this movement with completed projects across the country and in Europe. The firm was awarded the gold medal of the American Society of Landscape Architects, the profession's highest honor, in 2006.

Well-known for the restorations of Bryant Park behind the New York Public Library and the landscape of the Washington Monument, Olin is also recognized for the dramatic transformation of a derelict, brownfield site into the vibrant Canary Wharf, now the financial center for all Europe, and for the landscape design of the J. Paul Getty Center in Los Angeles and Columbus Circle in New York. The firm has also designed sculpture gardens for the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and the Toledo Museum of Art in Toledo, Ohio.

In dialogues with noted colleagues and collaborators, each of the partners articulates a personal vision and philosophy of landscape and design. Laurie Olin, founding partner, speaks with the poet Michael Palmer, while Susan Weiler reflects on her collaboration with artist Jenny Holzer. Other dialogue participants are Kim Tripp, former director of the New York Botanical Garden; Niall Kirkwood, chair of the landscape architecture department at Harvard; Sean Timmons, founder of Simmons Design Engineering; and Charles Waldheim, a leading proponent of landscape urbanism. Taken together, these conversations provide a unique window into the creative process.

Яркая и насыщенная жизнь одной из знаковых фигур дизайна XX века – архитектора, декоратора Оливера Меселя. Более 200 страниц эксцентричного творчества, включающие не публиковавшиеся ранее снимки.

A vibrant study of one of the iconic figures of twentieth-century design, whose Romantic, whimsical, and wholly original style influenced a generation of architects and decorators. Oliver Messel was one of England’s foremost interior designers of the twentieth century, whose work also spanned the worlds of the stage design, film, and architecture. Born into a creative family of wealthy bankers, his career began in 1925 designing for Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes. He eventually became an internationally celebrated designer, branching out into drama, film, opera, interior design, textiles, and architecture. Romanticism and eccentricity were hallmarks of Messel’s style. His sets were famed for their exquisite delicacy, impossible detail, subtlety of color, and inventive use of materials. From the 1930s to the postwar period, Messel explored the fields of interior design and architecture, eventually designing numerous houses built on the islands of Mustique and Barbados for the jet set of the 1960s and ‘70s, among them Antony Armstrong-Jones (Earl of Snowdon) and Princess Margaret. Oliver Messel is filled with previously unpublished images that chronicle a unique, eccentric, and, until now, largely overlooked oeuvre that reached across several mediums and continues to influence insiders from the worlds of interior design, architecture, and fashion.

About the Authors:

Thomas Messel, the nephew of Oliver Messel, is a furniture designer and is responsible for the refurbishment of two of Oliver Messel's design projects: Dorchester Hotel, Flaxley Abbey. Antony Armstrong-Jones, Lord Snowdon, is a photographer and filmmaker. Anthony Powell is a costume designer for stage and screen. Stephen Calloway is the author of Obsessions: Collectors and Their Passions and The Elements of Style: A Practical Encyclopedia of Interior Architectural Details from 1485 to the Present. Sarah Woodcock is a curator at the Victoria and Albert Museum's Theatre Museum. Jeremy Musson is an architectural historian, writer, and broadcaster.

One of Austria’s most influential architects, Otto Wagner (1841-1918) played a key role in modernizing urban architecture. Forming an approach described as structural rationalism, Wagner pioneered use of materials such as glass, steel, and especially aluminum. He was associated with the Viennese Succession, a group of artists and designers headed by Gustav Klimt that initiated a departure from the conservative style of the Viennese Künstlerhaus. Among Wagner’s most important buildings are the Vienna Postsparkassenamt (Postal Savings building) and the Steinhof Church.

The Pioneer of Viennese Modernism. Discover the groundbreaking structures of Otto Wagner

At once a realist and a visionary, an architect and a builder, Otto Wagner innovated a new era in building-making. Born in Vienna, the visionary architect made his presence felt — he pioneered the use of materials like glass, steel, and aluminum, in a ceaseless experimentation with form that would come to redefine Viennese structural identity, and urban architecture altogether.

Otto Wagner (1841–1918) is one of the most significant figures of turn-of-the-century architecture. He was associated with the Viennese Secession, a group of artists and designers headed by Gustav Klimt that initiated a departure from the conservative style of the Viennese Künstlerhaus. Wagner’s visionary approach, described as structural rationalism, pioneered the use of materials such as glass, steel, and especially aluminum to redefine Viennese structural identity.

From the imposing Austrian Postal Savings Bank to the scintillating St. Leopold Church at Steinhof, one of the most important Art Nouveau churches in the world: Discover the breadth of Wagner’s career as well as the political, economic, and social dynamics of his time. This incisive overview features a map locating all of the architect’s most renowned projects and recent, fresh photography from masters like Keiichi Tahara.

No other architect in the history of Western art has had an influence so spontaneous and yet so enduring as Andrea Palladio. Palladianism broke through all cultural stylistic barriers. It spread not only throughout the Neo-Latin nations but held Germany, the Netherlands, Scandinavia and the countries of Eastern Europe in its sway and formed the lineaments of English architecture of the 17th and 18th centuries. Palladio lived in an age which was extremely exciting for the historical development of architecture and his work was an important factor in the evolution from Renaissance to Baroque. This volume offers a thorough introduction to the architecture of Palladio and includes all works which researchers have attributed to him.

In the tradition of Addison Mizner, Maurice Fatio, John Volk, and Howard Major - the early architects of Palm Beach’s great estates and public buildings of the Gilded Age - the architecture of Jeffery W. Smith stands resplendent as a testament to the refined elegance of another time, and is as well a promise of the grandeur that the future holds.

Hailed by Town & Country as “the most adept young historicist working in Palm Beach today,” preeminent Palm Beach architect Jeffery Smith is a paragon of exquisite design sense, as is clearly evident in the houses featured here. Smith’s work - a continuation of the classical Mediterranean style characteristic of the town that has come to be known as the “American Riviera” - is showcased in Palm Beach Splendor in seventeen of his most recent projects, in magnificent full-colour photographs featuring interiors by such well-known designers as Peter Marino and David Easton.

Success at Perkins+Will is measured by how imaginatively a client’s vision is translated into a finished product. The firm designs and strategizes with a philosophy that places people at the center of their work; collaboration is what propels their design process forward. This approach is a Perkins+Will legacy, dating back to one of the firm’s first and most prestigious projects, the 1930s Crow Island School, designed with the insight founder Larry Perkins gained from attending school with the children. This monograph explores the firm’s work through its rich history, examining a variety of completed and conceptually designed projects that promote the firm’s philosophy of ideas and buildings that honor the broader goals of society.

Peter Gisolfi is an architect, landscape architect and educator whose substantial design practice extends over 20 years. Most of his work consists of carefully crafted buildings that relate to a larger setting. A variety of public and private projects completed throughout the United States are featured in this first monograph.

The projects in this book are organised thematically as landscapes and buildings, gardens and houses, campuses, townscapes, and transformations. The common threads in these projects are that indoor and outdoor spaces are created in harmony with each other, that buildings are placed to define outdoor spaces, and that natural context and man-made context strongly influence the design. From an understanding and response to these factors comes a timeless and permanent architecture.
