The definitive worldwide architectural history of the library, with spectacular original photography by one of the finest architectural photographers at work today

Ambitious and wide-ranging, this is the first single-volume to tell the story of the library as a distinct building type, all around the world and from the beginnings of writing to the present day.

Book collections have always served to display their owners’ culture and learning and the word ‘library’ has come to mean not only the books themselves, but also the buildings that house them. Each age and culture has moulded them to reflect its own priorities and preoccupations – mirroring the history of civilization itself.

In its highest form the library became a total work of art, combining painting, sculpture, furniture and architecture. From their designs for the libraries of ancient Rome to those of the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris, architects have sought to outdo each other by producing ever more spectacular settings.

The author and photographer have travelled the globe, documenting some eighty libraries. Architectural historian James Campbell contributes an authoritative and highly readable account. Will Pryce is one of the world’s leading photographers of interiors and architecture. Arresting and technically flawless, his photographs are both lucid and deeply atmospheric.

All of the libraries in the world – small or large, public or private – serve the same purpose: to preserve, cherish, or show off the riches of human knowledge.

Now, for the first time, an internationally renowned photographer takes the reader on a journey to more than twenty of the most historical of these magical places, all architectural treasures. From the dramatic, baroque Library of the Institut de France in Paris, to the splendid Vatican Library in the Vatican City; from the majestic Royal Library at El Escorial, Spain, to the famed New York Public Library, a Beaux-Arts masterpiece – here are some of the most exquisite libraries of the Western world.

Included are national, scholarly and religious libraries from twelve countries, which have in common a distinguished heritage and an architectural setting that emphasizes art and culture. The accompanying text traces the history of libraries to the present day, and describes how they came to serve famous personalities and men of letters. Libraries must be counted as among civilization’s crowning achievements; this elegant book is a fitting tribute to that accomplishment.

The retro-futuristic epoch is one of the most visually spectacular in architecture’s history.

The utopian buildings of the 1960s and 1970s never go out of style. This book compiles radical ideas, rediscovered photos, and visionary structures.

Driven by idealistic visions, utopian architecture aimed to overcome social divisions and political strife, to put us in touch with nature, and to enable us to live humane, healthy lives. For half a century, it was both hope and inspiration.

The Tale of Tomorrow surveys this diverse twentieth-century phenomenon, featuring renowned works like The House of the Century or the TWA terminal, as well as lesser-known masterpieces, and profiling major thinkers such as Oscar Niemeyer, Le Corbusier, and Eero Saarinen. By digging through archives, corresponding with descendants of departed architects, and restoring photographs, the collection of utopian approaches herein maintains a visual power and infectious optimism.

Looking at past dreams, The Tale of Tomorrow is a call to reclaim our future.

Since the last century, most of the public space has been designed for and around the automobile. Gradually, a mostly undifferentiated infrastructure developed into landmark architecture, with buildings and constructions of all kinds that interpret and mark the contemporary's ”automobile way of life”. Be it parking garages, gas stations, wash-cafés, bridges or motor hotels: the subject has a surprising lot of designs to offer. Paolo Tumminelli’s ”Traffic design” shows recent interesting projects from the whole world.
