An elegant presentation of stunning and inspiring architectural drawings from antiquity to the present day

Throughout history, architects have relied on drawings both to develop their ideas and communicate their vision to the world.

This gorgeous collection brings together more than 250 of the finest architectural drawings of all time, revealing each architect's process and personality as never before. Creatively paired to stimulate the imagination, the illustrations span the centuries and range from sketches to renderings, simple to intricate, built projects to a utopian ideal, famous to rarely seen - a true celebration of the art of architecture.

Visually paired images draw connections and contrasts between architecture from different times, styles, and places. From Michelangelo to Frank Gehry, Louise Bourgeois to Tadao Ando, B.V. Doshi to Zaha Hadid, and Grafton to Luis Barragán, the book shows the incredible variety and beauty of architectural drawings.

Drawing Architecture is ideal for art and architecture lovers alike, as well as anyone interested in the intersection of creativity and history.

In recent years, perspective views have swept into the foreground in the field of landscape architecture. They have become the showpiece of any new design project, frequently overshadowing the plan as the principal graphic mediator of ideas. Perspectives communicate planned spaces unlike any other orthographic architectural projections, easily connecting with human modes of vision and perception. Yet we have become so accustomed to seeing them that we no longer examine their underlying messages.

This manual examines the history of these multifaceted images and their power to shape our expectations and thinking. Moving chronologically from the Renaissance to the present day, the book charts their evolution and dissects the motives behind their construction. It also provides clear practical guidance on how to compose persuasive images for diverse audiences.

Presented in this book are numerous historical and contemporary examples, underscoring the perspective’s continuing importance in professional practice.

Key thematic areas include:
_ Introduction to terminology: Basics and principles
_Constructing and composing perspectives
_Transmitting messages: The landscape as a medium for ideas
_ Enduring themes of beauty, the sublime, and awe
_The future of perspective views

An all-in-one introduction to combining traditional drawing techniques with computer-aided design

As hand-drawing returns to design courses around the world, this welcome publication celebrates the best aspects of traditional techniques while incorporating them into today’s digital design methods. It reintroduces the importance of learning to ‘see by hand’, to visualize large-scale design schemes and explain them through drawing, before using the digital tools that are so crucial to efficient and cost-effective building solutions.

Combining traditional drawing techniques with those from CAD rendering, Drawing for Landscape Architecture guides practitioners from their very first impression of a site, through concept and schematic design and client presentation to construction and site drawings, to two case studies that show the final result. This new and expanded edition includes a new chapter on the relationship between landscape design and architecture, along with a selection of updated artwork.

Contents List:

1. Absorbing the Landscape • 2. Drawing on Site • 3. Drawing Ideas • 4. Plan, Elevation and Section Drawing • 5. Isometric Drawings • 6. Perspectives • 7. Money Drawings • 8. Construction Detail Drawings • 9. Completed Work: Case Studies

About the Author:

Edward Hutchison is principal of his own successful landscape design practice in London. He was previously an associate of Foster & Partners. His drawings have been included in major exhibitions, including the Royal Watercolour Society’s annual show in 2011.

Stephanie Emerson, George Byrne, Ian Volner, Michael Worthington

Turning what architect Rem Koolhaas famously referred to as “junkspace”, the spatial flotsam of the Anthropocene, into candy-coloured dreamscapes, George Byrne depicts the gritty urbanism of Los Angeles in sublime otherworldliness. Arriving a decade ago, the Australian artist was immediately enthralled by the sprawling cityscape, mesmerized by the way the sunlight transformed it into two-dimensional, almost painterly abstractions, underpinned by a distinctive pastel color palette. Extending his practice beyond the confines of the lens by extracting elements from various images, his series Post Truth dwells in the liminal space between real and imagined.

Reassembling the urban landscape into striking, ascetic collages of color and geometric fragments, Byrne creates postmodernist oases in the metropolis that masterfully harness the malleability of the photographic medium. Byrne’s compositions evoke associations with Miami Beach’s Art Deco, the Memphis Group’s designs, as well as the work of David Hockney or Ed Ruscha, and at the same time tap into the specific aesthetics of today’s visual culture played out on Instagram. They are filled with a sense of suspended reality ― and never fail to convey a feeling of joy.

About the Artist:

Born in Sydney in 1976, George Byrne graduated from Sydney College of the Arts in 2001, and traveled extensively before settling in Los Angeles in 2010. Today, he is internationally recognized for his large-scale photographs shot with medium-format film. Byrne has exhibited internationally, and was named the Minimalist Photographer of the Year in 2020.

Издательство: Monacelli Press

The first in-depth publication of drawings that reveal the creative genius of H. H. Richardson, the greatest American architect of the nineteenth century

The trove of 4,000 drawings, preserved since Richardson’s death, have been largely unpublished, until now. This new book encompasses masterpieces such as Trinity Church in Boston, MA— voted the “most beautiful building in America” in 1885— the Allegheny County Courthouse and Jail in Pittsburgh, PA; the Ames Gate Lodge in Easton, MA; the Glessner House and the Marshall Field Wholesale Store in Chicago, IL; and many more.

The book makes a major contribution to Richardson scholarship through its presentation of unpublished sketches, renderings, and plans of more than 50 projects, including city and country houses, churches, libraries, railroad stations, and municipal buildings. Its companion text includes an essay surveying the life and career of Richardson by James F. O’Gorman, the leading scholar of his work, which provides context to the drawings, together with additional essays that discuss the organization of Richardson’s studio in Brookline, MA, and his personal approach to a wide network of clients as well as an overview of the Richardson archive at Harvard.

With its curated selection of 450 drawings, meticulously reproduced to reveal the design process and hand of the architect, this book is a revelatory exploration of Richardson’s work, work that set American architecture on a new course and exerted a global influence on the birth of modernism.

With their power of visualization, architectural drawings and sketches are unmatched in their capacity to anticipate the esthetic appearance of a building after its completion. The hand-drawn vision highlights the main features and characteristics of a building, which is overshadowed by the seemingly perfectly realistic approach of a rendering. Despite the nearly unending possibilities of computer-based methods, drawings and sketches remain the most intuitive expression method of architects.

The volume combines the most diverse drawing and painting methods, juxtaposing implemented sketches with selected photos of the final result, allowing readers to comprehend the connection between the intention and outcome themselves. After the success of the publication Architectural Visions, which focused on the German-speaking realm, this successor volume is dedicated on the individual handwriting of the most important and influential architects of our time.

Lines are thoughts that can be drawn and are often more precise than words. Only ideas that can be drawn can be translated into a design. 1D, the "first dimension," is thus the point of departure for the design process both in training and in professional practice. This publication focuses on the learning and function of drawing. Drawing assignments created for the Schule für Gestaltung Basel (Basel School of Design) are commented on based on a conceptual system in the form of a "network card." On the one hand, this shows the quality of the drawings; on the other hand, it provides the vocabulary necessary to communicate about the complex process of drawing – with the goal of ever better results. An introductory essay addresses drawing as a process of perception and realization. The book is rounded out by statements from renowned designers, each accompanied by an original drawing, on the significance of drawing to their work.

A privileged view of the sketchbooks of over eighty architects and studios, showing how they use drawing to express their spatial ideas while revealing their individual methods

Architects' Sketchbooks shows what goes on in architects' minds as they envisage the built World and recast it through their imagination and visual skill.

This is the first survey to present the private sketchbooks of 85 architects, from such starchitects as Will Alsop, Shigeru Ban, Norman Foster and Eva Jiricna to rising talents from all over the world.

Will Jones's introduction explores the artistry behind the built world, and the importance of sketching as part of the design process; the sketches themselves range from simple pencil line drawings and clear perspectives to abstract compositions in pastel and collage, from quick freehand to measured mapping, from spontaneous squiggles on napkins to careful drawings on art paper.

Densely packed with over 750 illustrations, Architects' Sketchbooks is a celebration of how a sketch can become the start of a skyscraper.

This book shows the full creative potential of the computer. Packed both with practical applications and new concepts, it demonstrates that computers do not simply perform old tasks more efficiently, but enable us to generate whole new worlds. Robin Baker shows how the computer is potentially the firmest bridge ever built between the two cultures of art and science: once simply a tool for handling abstract symbols, it has engendered - with the advent of VDU technology - the electronic image, and with it a new form of expression. Initially, paint systems and 2-D and 3-D drafting programmes simply transferred traditional methods onto the screen; now our entire visual landscape - from architecture and interior design to film and graphics, from fashion and jewellery to printmaking and industrial design - is being transformed.

Virtual Reality allows 'solid' objects to be viewed from within; shape grammar gives architects the opportunity to recreate any building in an infinite range of forms; neural networks make computers 'see' like humans; rapid prototyping creates an immediate physical model of an electronic design; genetic algorithms provide instant 'generations' of design forms with controlled or uncontrolled mutations; hyperpublishing produces 'personal' magazines or books, created by electronic 'agents' responding to individual needs. Some of these incredible concepts are now actively being used; others lie in the near future. All of them give us a greater capacity for "Designing the Future" than ever before. For the vast audience in the fine and applied arts, in business, in education and in the home for whom the computer has become indispensable, this is essential reading.
