The book is 25 x 35cm and contains 12 fold out sheets. Each sheet is 50 x 70cm unfolded and is perforated for easy removal. The paper stock is chosen to accentuate the design and ink used, sometimes thin for shiny gold or silver, or thick and creamy for antique inspired design.

After a decade in which minimalism has held sway over the design industry, many designers are now rejecting the limitations of pared-down modernism in favor of a more rich and vibrant “maximal” aesthetic.

There is no doubt that at its best, mediæval pattern design can match that of any other era, even though it has often been overlooked in favour of the styles devised after the Middle Ages. However, it was during the Romanesque and Gothic periods that two-dimensional decorative elements and structures were developed that remain popular even today. Their particularly strong qualities include bold and powerful forms and subdued colours. Mediæval Patterns offers more than one hundred outstanding samples, carefully restored and reproduced in a very high quality.

The stained glass collection of the V&A is the largest in the world, making it possible through it to chart the development of the art from the middle of the twelfth century to about 1550. One hundred colour plates, and selected details, show major masterpieces to full advantage. Commentaries on each will reconstruct the original context of the panels, explain the imagery and give details of further reading, thus also providing an indispensable introduction to the subject. The text will touch on the techniques of stained glass, the major centres and monuments and the themes depicted in the pieces illustrated. Taken together, images and text illuminate a golden age of stained glass production, resulting in a beautiful book which will complement the major exhibition of Gothic art opening at the V&A in Autumn 2003.
