Once dismissed as the cosy world of teddy bears and fairies, children's book illustration has been transformed by the arrival on the scene of numerous highly original and contemporary graphic artists in recent years. Children now grow up with a more informed and sophisticated visual diet - cartoons, animated movies, comics, TV and computer games - consuming a vast range of stylistic approaches, and illustrated books have moved to match the demands of a more discerning market. Equally, artists who in the past may not have considered the children's picture book as an appropriate vehicle for artistic expression are increasingly drawn to this area. This book showcases some of the most interesting work emerging within the genre from a range of cultural backgrounds. It examines trends in the use of media - both digital and traditional - and discusses the variety of approaches to subject matter.

The Wiener Werkstätte or Vienna Workshops were founded in 1903 by architect Josef Hoffmann and artist Koloman Moser. Beginning in 1907, the Wiener Werkstätte began publishing a numbered series of postcards, which would ultimately exceed 1,000. There were numerous cards designed to celebrate holidays, such as Easter, Christmas, New Year’s, and others. When the fashion department was founded in 1910, costume and accessories became another popular subject depicted in the postcards, along with illustrations of places in Vienna and elsewhere in the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Europe. All of the major designers who worked for the firm were contributors in this medium including Josef Hoffmann, Oskar Kokoschka, Egon Schiele, and Dagobert Peche. Other noteworthy artists who were active in this area include Moriz Jung, Rudolf Kalvach, Mela Koehler, and Maria Likarz, among others. This publication is the first fully illustrated catalogue raisonné on Wiener Werkstätte postcards to appear in English.

From crowded dance halls to smoky cabarets, this vibrant collection of posters from the Belle Époque explores the birth, development, and continued popularity of a graphic genre.

Thanks to innovations in color lithography, the streets of fin-de-siècle Paris were punctuated with brightly hued posters featuring bold typography and playful imagery. Many of these posters were torn down almost as soon as they were pastedup, finding their way into private homes and, eventually, museums and collections all over the world. Although many artists contributed to the affichomanie, or “poster craze,” one of the most famous among them was Henri de Toulouse- Lautrec. This gorgeous book offers exquisite reproductions of more than one hundred posters, including those by Lautrec and his contemporaries Bonnard, Picasso, Chéret and Mucha. Advertising everything from tony theater productions to the licentious cancan, bicycles to biscuits, these posters range from cheerfully exuberant to slyly decadent. In her essay, Mary Weaver Chapin captures the voices of the artists, collectors, and critics who fueled the poster craze of the 1890s. The result is a visual spectacle, a lively discourse on the value and purpose of art, and a celebration of a historically and creatively dynamic era.

From the birth of clothing to modern menswear, this work reveals fashions role in monarchies, military regimes, dictatorships, and the birth of democracy.

From the advent of the first civilizations along the Euphrates, Indus, and Nile Rivers, as well as in China, clothing has not only offered protection from the elements, but has served as an expression of political power and its allocation throughout society.

From tribes to royalty, dictatorships to democracies, ones manner of dressing reveals as much about a societys structures as about the different identities and communities that it encompasses.

From ceremonial dress to fur coats, tribal paint, feather headdresses, or even grass skirts, finery conveys the power of its wearer. While so-called naked societies use ocher, feathers, Tapa cloth, or shells to demonstrate social standing, elsewhere gold, pearls, and other precious materials may be used to show an individuals importance. By studying the evolution of costume throughout history, we gain insight into the changes at the heart of communities, from East to West, via the first peoples of Africa and the Amazon basin.

The desire to dazzle and differentiate oneself via excessive luxury and adornment, or conversely the wish to conform, ones regalia says as much about an individual as about the society in which they live as leader, king, or ruler.

This volume covers the vast spectrum of regalia and the powerful figures who have worn it throughout the ages.

From the ceremonial robes of Chinese emperors, to the painted Nubas in Africa, via the trends of different European courts that gave rise to the modern male suit, the social aspects of clothing are explained in detail in this richly illustrated volume.
