The events of your life, from local walks to exotic trips, can provide endless inspiration for textile art. This inspiring book shows you how to record your experiences, using sketchbooks, journals and photography, to create personal narratives that can form a starting point for more finished stitched-textile pieces.

Acclaimed textile artist and teacher Cas Holmes, whose work is often inspired by her life and the journeys she makes, helps you find inspiration through your own life and explains how to record what you see in sketchbooks and journals, which can often become beautiful objects in themselves. She explains how you can use photography, both as documentation and as inspiration, and sometimes incorporate it into the work itself, along with found objects and ephemera.

Throughout the book are useful techniques that can be harnessed to add extra interest to your work, such as methods for making layered collages, how to 'sketch' with stitch, and advice on design and colour. If you want to create beautiful, unique work inspired by your life and travels, this is the perfect book for you.

About the Author:

Cas Holmes is one of UK’s most renowned textile artists. She exhibits widely and runs courses at West Dean College in West Sussex. She is the author of Textile Landscape, Stitch Stories, The Found Object in Textile Art and Connected Cloth, also published by Batsford. Издательство: Rizzoli

Since its inception in 1982, Stone Island has acquired a worldwide cult following for its cutting-edge outerwear. Neither fashion, nor luxury, nor streetwear, Stone Island has combined the elements of all three into a unique mix that has resonated with the Milanese paninari, the British football diehards, and the North American hip-hop fans alike.

In the world where brands latch on to culture, through its almost four-decade existence Stone Island influenced it. The long roster of its celebrity fans includes the Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher, the rappers Drake and Travis Scott, and the football guru Pep Guardiola. But it's not the celebrity nod that has made Stone Island a cultural cornerstone; it was the brand's ardent everyday fans who have always appreciated its mix of performance and toughness.

At the center of Stone Island's success lies its relentless pursuit of excellence in design, and uncompromising spirit of experimentation with fabric treatment and dyeing techniques. This product-oriented stance has secured the brand's unique place outside of fashion's hierarchy.

This definitive monograph captures the story of Stone Island, combining its history and ethos into one definitive source. With never-before-seen images and three major texts capturing the brand's story, it will surely delight the brand's diehard fans as well as those who are new to the world of Stone Island.

With introduction by Carlo Rivetti and foreword by Angelo Flaccavento.

About the Author:

Eugene Rabkin is a fashion journalist and critic. Carlo Rivetti is the head of Stone Island. Angelo Flaccavento is an Italian fashion journalist, writer, and curator.

Claudia Walde
ID: 8349
Издательство: Thames & Hudson

A unique typographical sourcebook featuring over 150 specially designed, original alphabets exclusive to this book

Classic graffiti lettering and experimental typographical forms lie at the heart of street culture and have long inspired designers in many different fields. But graffiti artists, who tend to paint the same letters of their tag again and again, rarely design complete alphabets.

Claudia Walde spent over two years collecting alphabets by 154 artists from thirty countries to show the many different styles and approaches to lettering within the graffiti and street art cultures. All of the artists have roots in graffiti. Some are world-renowned, such as 123 Klan (Canada), Faith47 (South Africa), and Hera (Germany); others are lesser-known or only now starting to emerge.

Each artist received the same instructions: design all 26 letters of the Latin alphabet within the limits of a single page of the book. How they approached this task and selected the media with which to express their ideas was entirely up to them, and the results encompass not just street art but sketches, sculpture, digital art, and photography.

This highly original book will inspire fans of street culture as well as typographers, graphic designers, advertising and communication students and design professionals worldwide.

Contents List:

Introduction • The Artists and their Alphabets A– Z • Acknowledgements

About the Author:

Claudia Walde, aka MadC, is a world-renowned graffiti artist, muralist, designer and writer. She was born in Bautzen, Germany, and is most known for her large-scale, outdoor artistic paintings. Unlike other packaging titles, which simply provide templates to copy, this book enables designers of all packaging types to create 3-D packaging forms that are specific to their needs rather than based on an existing design.

It teaches a simple ‘net’ construction system – a one-piece 2-D configuration of card seen when a 3-D package is opened out and flattened – which enables the designer to create a huge number of very strong 3-D packaging forms that are both practical and imaginative. Each chapter concludes with photographs and net drawings of 6–10 creative examples of packaging designs made using the principles outlined in the preceding chapter.

Structural Packaging gives the reader an understanding of the underlying principles of packaging construction and the technical knowledge and confidence to develop a greater number of their own unusual and innovative designs than any comparable book.

"Your job as a designer is not to find all the options (life is too short) but to find the ones that work for you; to limit your options … put simply: to design."

Paul Jackson is the author of over 30 books on paper arts and crafts. He has taught the techniques of folding on more than 150 university-level design courses in the UK, Germany, Belgium, the US, Canada and Israel and been a 'folding consultant' for companies such as Nike and Siemens.

Contents:

1.  Before You Start
2.  How to Design the Perfect Net
3.  Square-Cornered Boxes
4.  Deforming a Cube
5.  Common Closures
6.  Creating With The System
How Do I Produce My Box?

About the Author:

This is the definitive guide to dressing up, dressing down, dressing your age. Written by 40-something fashion journalist Alyson Walsh, and with a foreword by Mary Portas, Style Forever is inspired by Alyson’s popular blog, That’s Not My Age, which has been heralded as an alternative to the Botoxed, celebrity-obsessed, airbrushed world that we live in – and which evolved from Alyson’s long-standing observation that you don’t have to have youth to have style.

Alyson believes that style is available at any age. We become more confident as we get older, but our sartorial concerns shift - we want to look modern not mutton and have to consider how to best conceal the wobbly bits without taking the last train to Frumspville. Chapters cover the likes of What Women Want: The Manifesto; Casual Glamour; Not Dead Yet Style; You’re Never Too Old For...; The Fashion Bin; and The Grown-Up Style Guide. Stylishly illustrated throughout, and with interviews with designers and inspirational women such as Eileen Fisher and an introduction from Ari Seth Cohen of Advanced Style.

A complete illustrated guide of style tribes and fashion subculture from 1900s-2020s

Stylepedia uncovers global styles, exploring their origins, distinct features, and the cultural and historical contexts that shaped them. From historical trends to the latest buzz on social media, it is your essential guide, providing the knowledge and inspiration needed to understand different styles at their core.

Stylepedia helps the designers to understand more about the style and facilitates the creation of meaningful design. It serves as a diverse style directory for stylists, provides a quick rundown of fashion history for fashion students, and presents a global fashion subculture panorama to all readers.

From major trends:

The book addresses the key trends that have defined global fashion, ranging from the 20s' Flappers, the New Look, Ivy League styles, Hip Hop culture, to the Y2K era. It offers a comprehensive understanding of the fashion evolution over the past century.

To lessor known subculture:

The book talks about lesser-known subcultures that have nonetheless shaped the currents of fashion evolution. From Pachucos and Leathermen, to Bogans, Takenoko Zoku, Sapeurs, and Riot Grrrl, it helps uncovering the hidden influencers of the style landscape.

Chapter 1 - The Modern Era

The early 20th century, a period of rapid modernization and social change, was marked by prosperity and optimism. Despite the economic hardship of the Great Depression, cultural milestones like the rise of jazz, women’s suffrage, and the golden age of Hollywood offered glimmers of hope and innovation amid adversity.

Chapter 2 - Transformation through War

World War II significantly reshaped fashion and style. The practical needs of wartime gave rise to new, functional trends, while the post-war period saw a surge in alternative subcultures and a return to luxury. The era left a lasting impact, fostering a future fashion landscape that was more casual, practical and diverse.

Chapter 3 - Teen Power

Post-war prosperity birthed a distinct culture of teenagers, who were eager to differentiate themselves from their parents. Influenced by mass consumerism and entertainment, they began experimenting with fashion and subcultures as a form of rebellion and identity-seeking. This pivotal shift positioned teens as influential cultural catalysts, forever reshaping the landscapes of fashion and society.

Chapter 4 - The Swinging Sixties

The 1960s were a youth-centric era of optimism driven by technological advancements and economic prosperity. Art and fashion mirrored this daring and playful spirit, serving as significant reflections of this dynamic era. Concurrently, the surge in well-educated youth emerged as a transformative societal force. Their heightened social conscience paved the way for significant political movements.

Chapter 5 - Blossoming Revolution

Amid the tumult of the Vietnam War and the civil rights movement, “flower power” emerged as a potent symbol of peace, unity and diversity. It intertwined fashion and sociopolitical advocacy, rejecting mainstream norms and championing inclusivity. Aligning style with civil-rights aspirations, the movement catalyzed societal shifts toward greater equity and diversity.

Chapter 6 - The Neon Era

The Neon Era, synonymous with the 1980s, was characterized by vibrant, over-the-top fashion mirroring the decade’s materialism and burgeoning economic confidence. This period, marked by the mantra “greed is good,” saw an explosion of individualistic expressions in fashion and subcultures, encapsulating the era’s cultural shifts and economic exuberance.

Chapter 7 - Alternative Goes Mainstream

Marked by the end of the Cold War and the dawn of the digital age, the 1990s ushered in a dramatic transformation in fashion. The era saw a shift toward alternative styles, the mass adoption of trends fueled by celebrity culture, and a mainstream integration of street-inspired fashion, reflecting the decade’s dynamic socio-cultural shifts.

Chapter 8 - Dot-Com Era

Marked by new millennium optimism, the 2000s brought a playful, experimental shift in fashion and subculture. The rise of the internet democratized fashion, facilitating the exchange of styles and trends, and making them instantly accessible via online platforms and social media. The result was a truly global fashion culture.

Chapter 9 - Flash Fashion

In the era of smartphones and social media, trends became short-lived “vibes” and microtrends emerged rapidly, no longer dictated by large brands but shaped by an interconnected online community. This shift, reflective of rapid technological progress, marked the dawn of truly participatory fashion.

Extensive Coverage

This book delves into the realm of style and fashion, examining how they shape and are shaped by the social, political and economic contexts in which they exist. It explores iconic styles and their origins and characteristics, tracing the threads that connect them to wider cultural narratives.

Author James Jebbia, Contributions by KAWS, Introduction by Glenn O'Brien and Aaron Bondaroff

The first monograph on the iconic independent New York street fashion label Supreme.

In April 1994, Supreme opened its doors on Lafayette Street in downtown Manhattan and became the home of New York City skate culture. Challenging the dominance of the established Wes Coast skater scene and the new conservatism of 1990s New York, Supreme defined the aesthetic of an era of rebellious cool that reached from skaters to fashionistas and hip-hop heads.

Over the last sixteen years, the brand has stayed true to its roots while collaborating with some of the most groundbreaking artists and designers of its generation, and with stores in Los Angeles and Japan has become an international icon of independent counter-cultural style.

This definitive monograph - with written contributions from contrasting arbiters of style, Aaron Bondaroff and Glenn O'Brien, and including an interview between founder James Jebbia and the artist KAWS - brings together the disparate elements of the brand's output, from legendary advertising campaigns to especially commissioned skateboard designs, photographs, and artworks, and a comprehensive index of their products to date.

Including collaborations with Jeff Koons, Richard Prince, Damien Hirst, Public Enemy, Lou Reed, and Futura 2000 among many others, this richly illustrated book is a survey of sixteen years of contemporary street fashion and culture reflected in the pioneering work of one of New York's most influential independent labels.

About the Authors:

Aaron Bondaroff began his career working at the Supreme store, and has since created his own fashion and lifestyle brands, Off Bowery and aNYthing. He lives in New York.

Glenn O'Brien is a renowned journalist who has been both music critic and editor of Interview magazine, and writes a monthly style column for GQ magazine. He lives in New York.

KAWS is a New York-based artist who has blurred the boundaries between street art, design and high art in his collaborations with Supreme, Original Fake, and Comme des Garcons, and in his exhibitions at galleries worldwide.
