Enchanted Worlds. Selected fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm and Andersen in a new edition

The world’s most beloved fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen, now in one precious anthology. With beautiful illustrations by legendary artists, scene-setting essays, introductions to each fairy tale, and an appendix with extended artist biographies, this collection is a delightful feast for the eyes and a pleasure to read — a must for every family library and art book collection.

More than 200 years ago, two brothers from Kassel, Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, published the first volume of their collection of German folktales. Over time the stories in their collection grew until finally, they numbered 200 fairy tales and ten legends. What was initially an attempt to preserve German traditions for posterity is today the most widely read collection of stories after the Bible. From Snow White to Cinderella and Rapunzel to Rumpelstiltskin, the Brothers Grimm left behind a canon of fairy tales that have become classics of children’s literature, part of the UNESCO world heritage, and an indispensable piece of our history and culture.

Hans Christian Andersen’s own life seemed to be out of a fairy tale — Charles Dickens was among his friends and admirers, and European princes held him in high regard. Through determination, talent, many a fortunate coincidence, and an exuberant imagination, he came out of impoverished circumstances to write himself into world literature. A fairytale kingdom without Andersen would be very impoverished itself and would have to do without characters such as the Snow Queen, the Princess and the Pea, Thumbelina or the Little Match Girl, but also many previously inanimate items which Andersen brought to life: silver shillings and darning needles, and especially his Steadfast Tin Soldier.

The Grimms’ and Andersen’s tales have inspired generations of artists, and each fairy tale in this volume is colourfully interpreted by a famous illustrator: legends such as Kay Nielsen (a leading exponent of the Golden Age of Illustration that ended in the 1920s), the Arts and Crafts master Walter Crane, Arthur Rackham, and the Swiss commercial artist Herbert Leupin. Alongside are silhouettes from historical publications as well as new vignettes that were made especially for this edition, which dance across the pages in an intricate shadow play. Introductory essays, on the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm as reflected in art and on Andersen as the heart and soul of the modern fairy tale, complement these flights of fancy, as do the short summaries on each fairy tale and artists’ biographies.

This double-sided book contains the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm on one side and Hans Christian Andersen’s tales on the other, each with its own cover. The following fairy tales are included:

The Brothers Grimm:
The Frog Prince, The Wolf and the Seven Little Goats, Rapunzel, Hansel and Gretel, The Brave Little Tailor, Cinderella, Mother Holle, Little Red Riding Hood, The Bremen Town Musicians, The Shoemaker and the Elves, Tom Thumb’s Travels, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White, Rumpelstiltskin, The Three Feathers, The Golden Goose, The Goose Girl, The Twelve Dancing Princesses, The Star Coins, The Hare and the Hedgehog, Puss ’n Boots

Hans Christian Andersen:
The Princess and the Pea, The Nightingale, The Swineherd, The Emperor’s New Clothes, Twelve by Mail Coach, The Steadfast Tin Soldier, The Snow Queen, Ole Shut-Eye, The Ugly Duckling, Little Ida’s Flowers, The Shepherdess and the Chimney Sweep, The Flying Trunk, The Little Match Girl, The Tinderbox

The authors:

Brothers Jacob (1785–1863) and Wilhelm Grimm (1786–1859) were German academics and linguists who spent years collecting popular fairy tales and folk tales such as CinderellaSnow White, and Rapunzel. Their resulting compilation of over 200 stories Kinder- und Hausmärchen (Children's and Household Tales) is one of the most famous collections of tales in the world, influencing generations of writers, composers, artists, academics, and filmmakers.

Hans Christian Andersen is known today as the most famous Scandinavian writer ever, and his brilliant talent for storytelling has endeared him to millions. He was born into poverty on April 2, 1805, in Odense, Denmark, a day that has since become known as International Children’s Book Day. Andersen was the first writer to create fantasy stories for children’s sake, spawning the modern phenomenon of make-believe stories told from the child’s perspective. By the end of his life, Andersen’s tales had made him famous worldwide, and he was deemed a “national treasure” by the Danish government.

The editor:

Noel Daniel is a graduate of Princeton University and a former Fulbright Scholar to Berlin. Her TASCHEN publications include Kay Nielsen's A Thousand and One Nights and East of the Sun and West of the Moon, The Fairy Tales of the Brothers Grimm, The Fairy Tales of Hans Christian Andersen, Wintertime Tales, Magic, and The Circus.

A complete introduction to the hidden world of fungi

The kingdom of fungi has survived all five major extinction events. They are the architects of the natural world, integral to all life. They sustain critical ecosystems, recycling nutrients and connecting plants across vast areas, and help to produce many staples of modern life, such as wine, chocolate, bread, detergent and penicillin. Today, in the face of urgent ecological, societal and spiritual crises, fungi are being engineered to grow meat alternatives, create new sources of medicine, produce sustainable biomaterials, remediate the environment and even expand our collective consciousness.

The Future is Fungi is a complete introduction to this hidden kingdom. Exploring their past, present and potential future impact in four key areas – food, medicine, psychedelics and mental health, and environmental remediation – this book not only reveals how fungi have formed the foundations of modern life but how they might help shape our future.

Rich with informative texts, awe-inspiring 3D digital art and tips on how to immerse yourself in the world of fungi, this is a manifesto for the future, an invitation into a deeper awareness of our relationship with the natural world, each other, and ourselves.

About the Authors:

Beginning his career building technology and consumer startups, Sydney-born Michael Lim co-founded an online eyewear brand at the age of twenty-one, which is now one of Australia's largest eyewear chains. However, early transformational experiences with psychedelics inspired his fascination with the fungi kingdom and prompted a career change. He now dedicates his time to researching fungi, psychedelics, ecology and anthropology. His exploration of the psyche and how nature gives rise to altered states of consciousness has led him on a path of self-enquiry and integration of his shift in worldviews. Through his writing, Michael seeks to empower a deeper understanding of the human experience through art and science. A gifted researcher, Yun Shu is dedicated to the study of consciousness and uses language and culture as tools for connection and healing. Born in Shanghai, she was exposed to the benefits of traditional Chinese medicine and fungi from a young age. After a successful career in corporate strategy in the banking sector in both Sydney and London, she turned to spiritual enquiries through Vinyasa yoga teacher training. Concurrently, her early psychedelic experiences shaped her holistic inquiry into the human experience. Now, Yun seeks to share the wisdom and knowledge she has acquired through years of practical research.

A handbook for the new decade: a book that helps you think about how to slow down, reconnect and live a gentler life.

Monocle has always been a champion of taking it slow. It has encouraged readers to dive into a lake and go for a run. To sleep well. To eat food whose makers are proud of its provenance. In a shouty, jabbing-finger moment in history, it has done its bit to argue for a new modern etiquette to be generous with our time, hospitality and forgiveness. Now its editors and correspondents have brought all of this together in The Monocle Manifesto for a Gentler Life, a book that urges us all to slow down, reconnect, make good things and see nice places. And it also knows when to wear a cheeky smile. Chapters include:

• An illustrated guide to being nice, respecting your neighbour and controlling your social media rants.
• Profiles of the happiest nations – and the least lonely too.
• How to build a house that’s good for you and your family.
• Essays from leading thinkers and great writers on what we can gain if we shift gear.
• The businesses charting a better course – from management to pride in production.
• Food – a celebration of the locally made, the chefs that bring people together and a recipe or two.
• The objects to own that will give pleasure for years.
• The people who changed direction, slowed down and made it work.
• The compact cities where you can run a company, be inspired, have a good social life – and be hiking in a forest at 5pm.

For well over a decade Monocle has roamed the length of the boot – from the craggy peaks of the Dolomites to the azure waters of Sicily – and this is the result of their dedicated reporting. Join them as they throw down their towels at the best bagni, sit front row at dazzling runway shows, call in at vineyards, gelato spots and furniture fairs and maybe even hit a disco or two.
