An unprecedented collection of images from the City of Light. A refreshing update of the ‘classic’ Paris photo book by featuring photographers with a strong internet following

As one of Europe’s most important and vibrant cities for art, fashion, and culture, in general, it is difficult to capture the multifaceted city of Paris from the perspective of merely one lens.
Therefore, Streets of Paris bundles the work of over 40 photographers who roam the thousands of Parisian ‘rues’ to capture multiple, contemporary points of view of this dynamic world capital. The photographers, both Paris natives and international visitors alike, often draw on their strong social media presence. When combined, their independent visual voices show an unprecedented collection of Paris images. Unique views of the city’s famous landmarks like the Sacré-Coeur, the Louvre Museum, and the Eiffel Tower reveal an evocative city portrait. Lively areas overflowing with art and fashion, as well as lesser-known impressions of the city’s banlieues, are all captured with a present-day attention to detail and a wide-eyed love for “la Ville Lumière.”

A teNeues | MENDO publication

At the heart of MENDO is the love of pure design. Before establishing the inspirational concept store and go-to flagship bookstore for style-conscious bibliophiles in Amsterdam in 2002, founders Roy Rietstap and Joost Albronda were accomplished graphic designers with an eye for innovation and entrepreneurship. Thus, a brilliant retail concept was created in the form of the MENDO of today. The collaboration of teNeues x MENDO is a synergy on many levels — a premier international publisher of illustrated books on culture combining with trendsetting designers with a great love for beautiful, aesthetically-minded books — housed in a one-of-a-kind global bookstore. If you look closely, you will see that the simple, elegant black walls are actually made of precise stacks of books — an idea that is typical Amsterdam! www.mendo.nl

Generously illustrated with photographs from early twentieth-century reformers to contemporary artists, this collection of essays re-examines the genre of social documentary photography through the shifting lens of photographic objectivity, modes of dissemination, and the passions animating documentary projects.

While the public’s acceptance of photographs as visual evidence made documentary photography possible, canny interventions employed by image makers and their editors alternately exploit and dismantle assumptions of the medium’s transparency, testing our wish to see pictures inspire social change.

Among the photographers included in the exhibition and book are Berenice Abbott, Max Alpert, William Castellana, Walker Evans, Larry Fink, LaToya Ruby Frazier, Lewis Hine, Boris Ignatovich, Dorothea Lange, Igor Moukhin, Gordon Parks, Alexander Rodchenko, Arthur Rothstein, Sebastião Salgado, Arkady Shaikhet, Aaron Siskind, W. Eugene Smith, Weegee et al.

 - Beautifully illustrated survey of photography in the social sphere
 - First time the Zimmerli's photography collection is the subject of a book

John Leo Gillen
ID: 15960
Издательство: Prestel

This unique, visually exciting look at the evolution of nightclubs across America and Europe since the 1960s reveals an unwavering truth about club culture — the one constant changes.

Opening with the psychedelic haunts of the 1960s New York pop art scene and closing more than half a century later with the rise of post-club happenings, "Temporary Pleasure" shows how nightlife spaces have evolved to meet the needs of their generation, and how each generation was seeking something a little different from the one before. Each chapter focuses on a distinct phase and location: Italy’s politically radical clubs of the ’60s; New York City’s disco scene; Detroit and Chicago’s techno and house paradises; Ibiza’s counterculture communal retreats; Britain’s rave culture; and Berlin’s techno scene. The clubs come to life in double-page spreads that feature specs and detailed profiles. Author John Leo Gillen offers his take on various important cultural, design, and architectural details, while numerous photographs offer their own vibey stories. The book features interviews with people who were involved in a number of the scenes included, from NYC disco mainstay DJ Justin Strauss to Ben Kelly, architect of Manchester’s legendary venue The Haçienda. As the world emerges from its Covid-induced isolation, this celebration of crowded rooms, dance-worthy beats, and communal transcendence feels more important than ever.

About the Author:

John Leo Gillen is a temporary space designer and producer who was raised in the nightlife industry through his family’s nightclub business in Ireland. He initially began archiving ephemeral club spaces online under the banner Temporary Pleasure, before turning the project into a collective of architects, event producers, and creatives who are generating new ways to rebuild clubs through design labs, workshops, and pop-up spaces. He holds a master’s degree in Ephemeral Architecture and Temporary Spaces from Elisava in Barcelona, and lives in London.
