A visually stunning book that approaches erotic photography from a female point of view, curated by Iman Whitfield 

If you spend a reasonable amount of time online, chances are you may have stumbled across the phrase: #SENDNUDES. A staple of millennial lingo, the term is used to request sexually explicit photographs, typically over text messaging and dating apps. Over time, #SENDNUDES has also evolved into a meme, deployed as a common punchline in image and video internet jokes.

Today, #SENDNUDES is making another transition — as the title of a carefully curated book of nude photography. In collaboration with Iman Whitfield, MENDO reached out to photographers all over the world and asked them to send their favorite shots of female sensuality and intimacy. The result is a visually stunning photo collection approaching erotic photography from a female point of view, celebrating the diversity of female beauty and body confidence, and teasing the delicate line between that which is revealed and that which remains private.

The featured images were sent from all over the world, from such highly skilled erotic photographers as Dennis Swiatkowski, Fauve Bouwman, and Paul Bellaart — each bringing a distinctive style and approach to female sensuality, intimacy, and elegance.

Iman Whitfield is a creative director and (fashion) film director. She graduated from the Willem de Kooning Academy with a video series titled „LoveStories“ that went viral. Since then she has created fashion films for major brands like Scotch & Soda, Nike, Suitsupply, and Lois Jeans. Iman loves to observe people and their characteristics, constantly capturing those around her on film or through photographs.

The female form has been a central theme in art for as long as there has been some form of artistic expression.

This new title is a worthy addition to that veritable canon that celebrates feminine grace and strength. Compiled over a period of seven years, this volume of photographs is a visual tribute to the women of Denmark — to their womanly beauty and integrity as individuals. Since the beginning of civilization, women have worn underwear. Justified as protection, or a hygienic necessity, this "second skin" was devised to satisfy perverse erotic instincts. A "trap laid by Venus" to entertain and stimulate the fantasies of both the woman who wears them and the man who discovers them. Corsets, bras and panties are not utilitarian items - they are elements in a mystic ritual linking man and woman. They act as an obsessive focus for fantasy, for the sex they conceal is powerless without the decorations and seductions which separate us from it. Pleasure would perish without censorship.

Women have always known how to stimulate the latent fetishism of the men around them. Under her dress, a Greek girl of the classical period would wear a belt around her hips which was of no practical use except to draw attention to her feminity. Likewise, the women of Rome already wore garters round their thighs, though the stocking had not yet been invented. In our own century, vamps, starlets, pin-ups and models have filled our cínema screens, our advertising hoardings, our office calendars and our imaginations with the erotic engineering of the garter belt and the surreptitious rustle of nylon stockings.

Dessous traces the evolution of this living mythology from its first steps in the dawn of civilization to its apotheosis in the films and advertising campaigns of the modern world. Lavishly illustrated, it demonstrates how the conflict between the need to conceal and the will to reveal has provided women with the means to explore their own sexuality and exercise an erotic ascendancy over men. The result is a richly aphrodisiacal meditation, an intimate exploration of the props of our theatre of desire.

A glimpse through the keyhole of history. From the earliest nude daguerrotypes to experimental nude photography

The history of nude photography is the history of people’s fascination with the topic. Indeed, the photographic depiction of the human body is the only subject that has enthralled photographers, theoreticians and consumers over such a long period – more than 150 years. No other motif is as prevalent as this one during all the phases of development comprising the history of photography, no other is present, whatever the technique, and is a subject of discussion within the context of nearly all aesthetic movements. Nor has any other pictorial topic produced such a variety of specialities as the nude: from the ethnological interpretation of the body to the glamour shot, from nudist photography to the pin-up of today. No other photographic field of application has inspired as much desire as it has awakened official wrath.

1000 Nudes offers a cross-section of the history of nude photography, ranging from the earliest nude daguerrotypes and ethnographic nude photographs to experimental nude photography. The period of time spanned by this work is from 1839 to roughly 1939, from the medium’s infancy to the end of the classic modernist period. Content-wise, the book pays tribute to the full range of pictorial approaches, from the manually elaborated artistic nudes of the turn of the century, enveloped in layers of theory, to the “obscene” postcard motifs which had not the slightest artistic pretension and were intended to exert a maximum effect on the buyer’s wallet.

All the pictures shown are taken from the late Uwe Scheid’s collection, one of the world’s largest and most important collections of erotic photography.
