Bruno Mouron, Pascal Rostain
ID: 8813
Издательство: Thames & Hudson

Celebrities rule the modern world, and close behind them are the paparazzi, fuelling the media’s endless fascination with the rich and famous, while they themselves keep a low profile.

Bruno Mouron and Pascal Rostain are respected photo-reporters, based in Paris but ready to go anywhere for a scoop. They began working together in the late 1970s as contributors to the magazine Paris Match, and by 1986 they had set up a formal partnership, founding the agency Sphinx. Over the decades, they have honed the instincts required to catch the moment when a glance, a pose and a setting are most perfectly matched, capturing movie stars and models, rock stars and royalty.

From London to Paris, Hollywood to Cannes, here is a star-studded selection of those who live their lives in the spotlight, sometimes welcoming the camera, sometimes pursued by it.

Elizabeth Taylor and Grace Kelly, Michael Jackson and Kate Moss are among the iconic faces glimpsed in encounters that can be intimate, witty or confrontational. Spontaneity and immediacy are everything, with the blur of movement or the drama of tight close-ups contributing to the creation of some truly memorable shots that could never have been planned in advance.

Packed with striking black-and-white images that hark back to the golden age of photo-journalism, famous challenges us to recognize and celebrate a fresh frame of reference through which great photography can be judged.

Frantisek Drtikol
ID: 10003
Издательство: Torst

Though he is best known for his Art Nouveau and Art Deco nudes, when Frantisek Drtikol (1883-1961) passed way, he left more portrait photography than anything else--thousands of images made between 1910 and the 1930s.

This ambitious book is the first ever devoted to those portraits alone. The selection, culled from some 2,000 in Prague's National Archive, presents a gallery of eminent Czechs and Slovaks during the first Czechoslovak Republic, as well as prominent visitors to the country from many walks of life. Apart from their pure documentary value, these images reflect Drtikol's efforts to capture his sitters' inner selves, bridging idealism and materialism.

The artist has also been the subject of The Photographer Frantisek Drtikoland Photographs by Frantisek Drtikol; this volume is compiled and written by Josef Moucha.

Ol’ Blue Eyes Is Back. Gay Talese’s New Journalism triumph, Frank Sinatra Has a Cold

“Sinatra with a cold is Picasso without paint, Ferrari without fuel — only worse. For the common cold robs Sinatra of that uninsurable jewel, his voice, cutting into the core of his confidence.” — Gay Talese

In the winter of 1965, writer Gay Talese set out for Los Angeles with an assignment from Esquire to write a major profile on Frank Sinatra. When he arrived, he found the singer and his vigilant entourage on the defensive: Sinatra was under the weather, not available, and not willing to be interviewed.

Undeterred, Talese stayed, believing Sinatra might recover and reconsider, and used the meantime to observe the star and to interview his friends, associates, family members, and hangers-on. Sinatra never did grant the one-on-one, but Talese’s tenacity paid off: his profile Frank Sinatra Has a Cold went down in history as a tour de force of literary nonfiction and the advent of the New Journalism.

In this illustrated edition, Frank Sinatra Has a Cold is published with an introduction by Talese, reproductions of his manuscript pages, and correspondence. Interwoven are photographs from the legendary lens of Phil Stern, the only photographer granted access to Sinatra over four decades, as well as from top photojournalists of the ’60s, including John Bryson, John Dominis, and Terry O’Neill. The photographs complement Talese’s character study, painting an incisive portrait of Sinatra in the recording studio, on location, out on the town, and with the eponymous cold, which reveals as much about a singular star persona as it does about the Hollywood machine.

The author:

Gay Talese joined the staff of The New York Times in 1955 and remained there for a decade. During the 1960s and 1970s he contributed many articles to magazines, principally Esquire. Talese is the best-selling author of eleven books including Thy Neighbor’s WifeHonor Thy Father, and A Writer’s Life. He lives in New York City.

The photographer:

Phil Stern (1919–2014) was one of the preeminent photographers of Hollywood’s golden age, shooting for LookLife, and Colliers, and working as a “special photographer” on the set of over 100 feature films, including Some Like It HotWest Side Story, and What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?

Olivia Harrison
ID: 8889
Издательство: Abrams

Drawing on George Harrison’s personal archive of photographs, letters, diaries, and memorabilia, Olivia Harrison reveals the arc of his life, from his guitar-obsessed boyhood in Liverpool, to the astonishment of the Beatles years, to his days as an independent musician and bohemian squire. Here too is the record of Harrison’s lifelong commitment to Indian music, and his adventures as a movie producer, Traveling Wilbury, and Formula One racing fan. The book is filled with stories and reminiscences from Harrison’s friends, including Eric Clapton, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and many, many others. Among its previously unpublished riches are photographs taken by Harrison himself beginning in the mid-1960s. It is a rich tribute to a man who died far too young, but who touched the lives of millions.

Yelena Yemchuk
ID: 11473
Издательство: Damiani

Photographer and painter, Yelena Yemchuk is most commonly known for her fashion and portrait photographs. Yet her personal work, usually shot on a 35mm camera while traveling around the globe, has rarely been seen. On one such trip to her hometown of Kiev, Ukraine, Yemchuk visited Gidropark, an island on the Dnieper River that she frequented as a girl. On the beaches, sports grounds and woodlands that populate the park, she found herself face to face with the characters and faces that she continually searches for. Taken over three summers between 2005 and 2008, Yemchuk captures life in Gidropark as only she can portray it. Families stripped down to their bathing suits (or even less) enjoying a picnic take on a Felliniesque quality through her lens. Each image is an exquisite film still, giving the viewer not only the image on the page, but richly creating an entire storyline of its possible before and after.

About the Author:

Yelena Yemchuk was born in Kiev, and immigrated to the United States with her parents when she was eleven. She studied at Parsons School of Design in New York and Art Center in Pasadena. She has contributed to Italian Vogue, Japanese Vogue, Another, The New Yorker and The New York Times among many others.

The top female box-office star of 1954, Grace Kelly's status as icon takes in an 11-film, three-year, screen career and a glamorous later life as Princess of Monaco. More than any other star, she was in three memorable films the quintessential Hitchcock blonde, delineating traits of cool beauty, depths of hidden passion, intelligence, playfulness, and style- in short, the qualities that led biographer James Spada to call her “the pious man's Marilyn.” Yet Grace Kelly also showed her versatility and won her acting honors for playing against type in the title role in the grimly realistic movie The Country Girl. Grace Kelly was a classic beauty, a public figure, and serious actress representative of an era.

The Movie Icon series: People talk about Hollywood glamour, about studios that had more stars than there are in heaven, about actors who weren't actors but were icons. Other people talk about these things, TASCHEN shows you. Movie Icons is a series of photo books that feature the most famous personalities in the history of cinema. These 192-page books are visual biographies of the stars. For each title, series editor Paul Duncan has painstaking selected approximately 150 high quality enigmatic and sumptuous portraits, colorful posters and lobby cards, rare film stills, and previously unpublished candid photos showing the stars as they really are. These images are accompanied by concise introductory essays by leading film writers; each book also includes a chronology, a filmography, and a bibliography, and is peppered with apposite quotes from the movies and from life.

Hollywood star, royal bride, beloved princess – Grace Kelly lived all three roles with a style all of her own. Renowned for her cool beauty and faultless good taste, the young actress stood apart from the other film sirens of the fifties, with 1000s of women, both in the US and Europe, emulating her classic yet accessible style. Her marriage to Prince Rainier of Monaco in 1956 catapulted Grace Kelly to further fame and cemented her influence on the world of fashion. From the Parisian catwalks to the pages of Vogue, the ‘Grace Kelly Look’ became the look of the moment.

This book, the first to look exclusively at Grace’s unique style, accompanies an enchanting exhibition at the V&A opening in April 2010. Sumptuously illustrated, the book introduces Grace’s glamorous wardrobe as she transformed herself from actress to bride to princess.

Greg Gorman
ID: 8049
Издательство: Damiani

In 1982 Greg Gorman was just beginning his career as a photographer, creating campaigns and publicity shoots for such films as Tootsie, The Big Chill and Scarface, with stars from the worlds of film, television and music gracing his studio on a daily basis. It was also at this time that Jeff Gorman and Gary Johns created a campaign for the famous Los Angeles-based eyewear company, L.A. Eyeworks, for which they hired Gorman as house photographer. The ads were published as full-page bleeds in Andy Warhol's Interview magazine; and the campaign, one of the very first celebrity endorsed "advertorials" of its kind, has endured over 30 years, making it one of the longest running photo-campaigns ever. Gorman was able to recruit stars for the campaign from his film-studio work, and Warhol--who personally called the photographer and requested to do an L.A. Eyeworks shoot, which led to the series' most famous portrait--also gathered famous faces for the company. Alongside Warhol, the many celebrities photographed by Gorman in their L.A. Eyeworks frames include Boy George, Philip Glass, Meryl Streep, Jodie Foster, Iman, Lypsinka, Bryan Ferry, Grace Jones, Quentin Crisp, John Waters, Johnny Rotten, Rob Lowe, Whoopi Goldberg, Mickey Rourke, Frank Zappa, Elton John, Divine, Pierce Brosnan, David Hockney, Debbie Harry and Pee Wee Herman. Gorman's luscious, era-defining, black-and-white photographs are gathered here for the first time.

Greg Gorman Over the past 40 years, Greg Gorman has photographed famous and infamous faces for film, music, politics, sports, advertising and pleasure. Greg continues to seek out projects worldwide that both grant him new experiences and provoke his inspiration. Between spending time at his homes in Los Angeles and Mendocino, where he also teaches, Greg conducts workshops and lectures internationally, and hosts exhibitions of his fine art photography. This compilation follows Greg's previously published works Volume I, Volume II, Inside Life, Perspectives, As I See It, Just Between Us, The Odes of Pindar and In Their Youth.
