Derry Brabbs

Издательство: Frances Lincoln

Ten historic pilgrim routes of Western Europe, inspiration for today's long-distance walker.

Pilgrimage in Europe is thriving on a massive scale. In 1990 the cathedral at Santiago de Compostela recorded fewer than 5,000 pilgrims: today that figure is at least 200,000 a year. Author Derry Brabbs’ previous book, Roads to Santiago, focused exclusively on the 'camino' through France and Spain to Santiago de Compostela; Pilgrimage revisits this classic route, and nine other inspirational journeys across Europe.

Whether you’re truly making a pilgrimage, exploring the world, or simply hiking, Pilgrimage will lead you along deeply historical routes like the 'Jakobsweg' in Germany, between Cologne and Trier. You’ll find great walks in Britain and France, like St. Cuthbert's Way which winds around the Scottish Borders to the holy island of Lindisfarne, and the World Heritage Site of Mont-St-Michel built on the tiny island off the coast of Normandy.

The most notable addition to the rejuvenated era of pilgrimage is the Via Francigena, now a very well-established path through Switzerland and Italy. The Italian section begins on the bleak summit of the Great St Bernard Pass where a hospice still caters to the needs of passing pilgrims before heading down to Rome through some of Italy’s most beguiling countryside interspersed with medieval hilltop towns and villages.

Astounding photographs combine with an absorbing text that describes the history and key features of each route, as well as brief details of the distances and the number of days it takes to walk, and a list of websites to help plan your journey.

About the Author:

Derry Brabbs is regarded as one of England's finest photographers within the spheres of heritage and landscape, with over thirty illustrated books to his credit. His stunning colour photographs for the worldwide best-seller James Herriot's Yorkshire contributed to its success and he had a long and fruitful association with Alfred Wainwright. As an author in his own right, Derry has written and illustrated a dozen books including The Roads to Santiago and Pilgrimage. Derry lives in Harrogate, Yorkshire.

Miguel Flores-Vianna
ID: 13632
Издательство: Vendome Press

Miguel Flores-Vianna’s childhood in Argentina was marked by two constants that he believes shaped the life he chose to lead: travel and books. Perhaps because the country feels like it is located at the end of the world, most Argentines are born with a good dose of wanderlust, and Flores-Vianna had a higher dose than normal.

Books helped him discover places both literally and figuratively, creating romantic visions of lands he wanted to visit, and he has gone on to document his peripatetic life with his camera, recording places as he feels they should be rather than as they are. In this irresistible volume, Flores-Vianna shares some 250 of his favorite images taken all over Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Americas – captured only with his smartphone – in the hope that viewers, seeing the world through his eyes, will learn to love these most wondrous of places as much as he does.

Cristina Mittermeier
ID: 11979
Издательство: teNeues

From ocean shores to some of the most remote indigenous communities in the world, photographer Cristina Mittermeier explores humanity’s relationship with the planet and possibilities for a mindful, sustainable future.

Cristina Mittermeier knows a thing or two about water. Trained as a marine biologist and a photographer, the Mexico City-born Mittermeier combines her work behind the lens with her passion for environmentalism, taking pictures around the world to explore our relationship to the earth and ocean and to draw attention to the beauty and the plight of our planet. In Amaze, Mittermeier elicits our wonder and awe at the natural world and the labyrinth or “maze” of navigating a sustainable existence. The book combines two series: “Enoughness” and “The Water’s Edge.” The first draws out Mittermeier’s philosophy for a mindful and sustainable way of being in the world. Bringing together photographs from some of the most isolated corners of the earth, the book shows wild animals, remote landscapes, and indigenous peoples — challenging the cult of material wealth and proposing alternatives for a meaningful and sustainable connection to our environment, each other, and ourselves. In “The Water’s Edge,” Mittermeier presents photographs from around the globe that capture the frontier between land and ocean and the special meaning it has for human life. Whether it is fishermen bringing in their daily haul, women washing laundry in the shallows, or surfers frolicking in the spray, the water’s edge is revealed as an integral and universal space in which ephemeral moments reveal not only our common dependency on the planet, but also our common humanity. As much an inspiration for sustainable living as a staggering collection of nature photography, Amaze is a must-have book for all those who care about our planet and those we share it with.

About the author:

Photographer and marine biologist, CRISTINA GOETTSCH MITTERMEIER, was born in Mexico City in 1966. A passionate environmentalist, she founded the International League of Conservation Photographers (ILCP) in 2005 and the non-profit organization SeaLegacy in 2015. Her work has been published in National Geographic and TIME and she has received both the Mission Award from the North American Nature Photography Association and the Smithsonian Conservation Photographer of the Year Award.

Every other breath we take comes from the ocean. What we do or fail to do in the next five years will determine what our oceans and planet look like for the next ten thousand years. That is why I co-founded SeaLegacy, an organization that, with your support, can change how the story ends. — Cristina Mittermeier

 - A pioneering book of nature photography from environmental campaigner and photographer, Cristina Mittermeier

Sebastian Copeland, Foreword by Leonardo DiCaprio
ID: 15970
Издательство: Rizzoli

Winner of three 2020 International Photography Awards and named Photographer of the Year from the Tokyo International Awards, explorer Sebastian Copeland's stunning photography delivers unparalleled access to the least explored continent on Earth and galvanizes our awareness of the threats of global warming.

Antarctica's ice sheet is a powerful entity, alive and dynamic. It is up to three million years old; its mass is constantly and imperceptibly moving, finally calving to the sea. Deep in the heart of the continent is a barren desert of snow, while the coast teems with life: the dominion of whales, birds, penguins, and seals, which had previously evolved outside of human contact.

Until recently, scientists thought Antarctica had remained mostly untouched by climate change. But now they have warned that the ice is indeed melting-- and quickly. "My research there gave me a deeper perspective of the subtle variations taking place at the hands of climate change," says Copeland. "The images I bring back tell the story of a changing envi- ronment that spells the oncoming redrawing of the world's map, and all that it implicates."

About the Author:

In 2017, Sebastian Copeland was named one of 25 of the world's top adventurers of the last 25 years. With approximately 5,000 miles under his skis in the polar regions, Copeland has led numerous expeditions to document the endangered ice, reaching both the North and South Poles on foot. Copeland was twice named Photographer of the Year and has addressed the U.N., governments, universities, and Fortune 500 companies to warn of the systemic transformations taking place in the polar regions and their geopolitical consequences. In 2019, Copeland was awarded by French President Emmanuel Macron the National Order of Merit. He is a fellow of the Explorers Club and spent 15 years on the Board of President Gorbachev's NGO Global Green USA.
