Author Gaelin Rosenwaks, Foreword by Carl Safina
ID: 15826
Издательство: Rizzoli

For centuries, we have been fascinated by the sperm whale — the world’s largest-toothed predator. Now you can experience an intimate underwater journey to connect with these majestic and gentle goliaths.

Inspired by a life-changing childhood experience, Gaelin Rosenwaks set off on a journey to tell the story of sperm whale families through photography and film. In the waters off Dominica, she observed — eye to eye — the close bond between mother and child firsthand. What she found is that these animals live in matriarchal family units made up of remarkable females that stay together for generations. Like elephants and humans, they take care of one another.

Rosenwaks’s years as a marine biologist, diver, and underwater filmmaker and photographer prepared her to tell this beautifully stirring story with never-before-seen photographs of the world’s most marvelous ocean species.

About the Author:

Gaelin Rosenwaks is a marine scientist, explorer, photographer, filmmaker, and founder of Global Ocean Exploration, which conducts expeditions in every ocean to alert the public to the challenges facing our oceans. She has appeared as an expert on the Discovery Channel, the Science Channel, CBS News, and the National Geographic Channel. Her forthcoming documentary, Finding Physty, will release in 2022. Carl Safina’s nonfiction about the living world has won him a MacArthur Foundation “genius grant,” as well as Pew, Guggenheim, and National Science Foundation fellowships. His writing appears in the New York TimesTimeAudubon, and National Geographic, and his PBS series Saving the Ocean can be viewed online.

Laurent Baheux
ID: 11169
Издательство: teNeues

Many have tried to convey the true spirit of Africa’s animals in words, photography, or in music.

There may be no challenge greater; Africa’s fauna is vast in number and rich in diversity. In this finely crafted collection, French photographer Laurent Baheux uses the medium of black-and-white photography to capture the intricate details of both the wondrous beasts and the magnificent settings in which they dwell. This wide-ranging volume lays particular emphasis on his subjects’ individual spirits — revealing all of their vulnerability while losing nothing of their raw vitality. Every photograph is so carefully composed and well-lit that the details equal the evocative precision of an Old Masters portrait. Through Baheux’s eyes we get close to creatures that will both inspire and humble us all.

Laurent Baheux is a French-born photographer, who hails from Poitiers. Ever since a 2002 visit to Tanzania, he has been photographing Africa’s dwindling wild fauna, portraying their beauty, strength and majesty, while also emphasizing their vulnerability and the fragility of the environments in which they dwell. In addition to the consciousness-raising that is inherent in his photographic work, he accompanies and supports the deeds of organizations such as The United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) that work for the protection of nature and the preservation of biodiversity. Baheux is keenly aware that his pictures can help create public awareness about the importance of preserving and protecting wildlife. As well as an undeniable aesthetic appeal, his photography seeks to draw attention to the precarious situation facing Africa’s wildlife. His mission is to inspire those who witness his works not only to marvel, but also to take action.

 - An unparalleled survey of Africa’s majestic wildlife
 - One of the finest collections of natural photography in years
 - The perfect gift for any animal lover
 - Laurent Baheux' AFRICA series received the Honorable Mention of the Fine Art Photo Awards

David Yarrow
ID: 16025
Издательство: Rizzoli

From big cats to elephants and indigenous communities, Wild Encounters is a must-have for nature lovers, conservationists, and anyone who is inspired by all that remains wild. David Yarrow travels from pole to pole and continent to continent to visit frozen Arctic tundras, vast African deserts, primordial rain forests, and remote villages, inviting us to truly connect with subjects we mistakenly think we have seen before. Yarrow takes the familiar — lions, elephants, tigers, polar bears — and makes it new again by creating iconic images that deliberately connect with us at a highly emotional level.  For more than two decades, this legendary wildlife photographer has been putting himself in harm's way to capture the most unbelievable close-up animal photography, amassing an incomparable photographic portfolio, spanning six continents. Driven by a passion for sharing and preserving Earth's last great wild cultures and species, Yarrow is as much a conservationist as a photographer and artist. His work has transcended wildlife photography and is now collected and shown as fine art in some of the most famed galleries around the world. Featuring 160 of his most breathtaking photographs, Wild Encounters offers a truly intimate view of some of the world's most compelling — and threatened—species and captures the splendor and very soul of what remains wild and free in our world through portraits that feel close enough to touch.

About the Author:

David Yarrow was born in Scotland and is now based in London. He was named Young Scottish Photographer of the Year at the age of 20, and since turning his lens on the natural world, David has built an unrivaled reputation for capturing the beauty of the planet's remote landscapes and endangered animals. He is now Europe's best-selling wildlife photographer and is represented by a selection of the world's leading galleries while also being appointed as an ambassador for Nikon UK.  Tusk, whose Royal Patron is HRH The Duke of Cambridge, will receive proceeds from the sale of the book to support its vital conservation projects in Africa. Tusk is a dynamic and pioneering organization with 25 years of experience initiating and funding conservation, community development and environmental education programs across Africa. Since its formation in 1990, Tusk has invested more than $40 million into a wide range of projects across the continent.

Alfie Bowen
ID: 18050
Издательство: ACC Art Books

Sensitive, evocative photographs of wild breeds of horses roaming free in the British countryside.

Photographer and wildlife activist, Alfie Bowen, presents his two-year-long project photographing Britain's wild horses through the eyes of someone living with autism spectrum disorder. Wild Horses is all about connection: Bowen's personal connection to the animals he photographs; his connection to photography as an art form; the horses' connection to one another; and our collective connection to the land and our planet.

Bowen borrows the words of American landscape photographer Ansel Adams to describe his approach to his work: 'You don't make a photograph just with a camera. You bring to the act of photography all the pictures you have seen, the books you have read, the music you have heard, the people you have loved.' For Bowen, photography is an outlet for his emotional energy. It enables him to draw from difficult moments in his life and turn the energy that manifests from his emotions into truly mesmerising images.

_A fascinating insight into an alternative way of looking at the world.
_Foreword from wildlife presenter Chris Packham.
_Revealing descriptions of each photograph in Bowen's own words.

About the Author:

Alfie Bowen took up photography in 2014. It became an escape for him, and he credits it with saving his life. He uses his photography to raise awareness of the plight facing many species across the world, and to increase acceptance and understanding of autism. Bowen is proud to be an ambassador for Clinks Care Farm, Big Blue Ocean Cleanup and Young Bird Photographer of the Year. He also works closely with WWF. Alfie Bowen is based in Beccles, Suffolk.

William Wegman, William A. Ewing
ID: 11601
Издательство: Thames & Hudson

The ultimate collection of William Wegman’s Weimaraner photographs, in an accessibly priced format, with over 250 brilliant and witty images from across five decades.

All artists have a muse. Movie directors perfect their craft working again and again with the same actor, while choreographers find their inspiration for some of their greatest works when creating for a particular dancer. Sometimes a muse is a silent partner, the object of an artist's intense and obsessive gaze. At other times the relationship is a kind of performance, a deeply collaborative act. For William Wegman, whose muses have been all of these things and more over the years, inspiration arrived in 1970 when his dog, a Weimaraner named Man Ray, appeared in front of his camera.

William Wegman is a world-renowned American artist whose paintings, photographs, videos and drawings have been exhibited in museums and galleries internationally. Today he is perhaps best known for his collaborations with his longstanding muses, an ever-expanding cast of Weimaraners, for whom performing elaborate scenarios or merely posing demurely for their portraits comes as second nature. Curated in close collaboration with distinguished photography author William A. Ewing, William Wegman: Being Human is the most extensive collection of Wegman’s photographic work yet to be published. With over 300 images made over the last four decades, many published here for the first time, Being Human will delight and engage both those who are new to Wegman’s work and those who have admired his art for many years.

The book is organized thematically, presenting a wealth of exceptional work in such a way as to highlight the versatility of Wegman’s ever-inventive mind as he explores what it means to be human. From portraits of characters we so easily recognize – a suburban housewife, a famous actor, a nightclub singer, a golfer dressed in plaid – to imagery that toys with a wide range of visual languages, Wegman quotes freely from fashion photography, Cubism, colour theory, the tradition of the nude and the history of art itself.

With insightful essays by Ewing and Wegman, and an interview that explores the key concepts of the book, Wegman’s approach to his subjects and their life in the studio, Being Human celebrates a creative partnership - a relationship between an artist and his muses - that continues to this day.

Melissa Harris, Michael Nichols

“Menaced by lizards in Indonesia, cuffed by a gorilla in Africa, stung by poisonous caterpillars in the world’s deepest cave” — so ran the lead to a 1985 article describing Michael “Nick” Nichols.

A Wild Life is Michael “Nick” Nichols’s story, told with passion and insight by author and photo-editor Melissa Harris. Nichols’ story combines a life of adventure, with a conviction about how we can redeem the human race by protecting our wildlife. The book’s two central characters are the photographer — who journeys from the American South, via the photographers’ co-operative Magnum, to becoming lead wildlife photographer of National Geographic magazine — and the author, who travels with the photographer on assignment in Africa, to gain intimate and deep insight into her subject. Harris’s story also draws on meetings with some of the world’s leading eco-scientists — including legendary primatologist, Jane Goodall.

Melissa Harris Melissa Harris is editor-at-large of Aperture Foundation, where she has worked for more than twenty-five years, including as editor-in-chief of award-winning Aperture magazine from 2002 to 2012. She served on New York City’s Community Board 5 for several years, and is a trustee of the John Cage Trust.

Michael “Nick” Nichols is an award-winning photographer whose work has taken him to the most remote corners of the world. He became a staff photographer for National Geographic magazine in 1996 and was named editor-at-large for photography in January 2008. From 1982 to 1995 he was a member of Magnum Photos. His previous books with Aperture are Gorilla (1989), with an essay by George Schaller; Brutal Kinship (2005), with an essay by Jane Goodall; and Earth to Sky: Among Africa’s Elephants, A Species in Crisis (2013). David Liittschwager, Susan Middleton

Издательство: National Geographic

For this project, Middleton and Liittschwager gained unprecedented access to photograph on and around these protected islands that are otherwise completely off-limits to people. Home to nearly seventy percent of our nation's coral reefs, known as the "rainforests of the sea," the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands is a remarkable ecosystem that supports a vast array of interdependent native plants and animals that have evolved in this habitat over millions of years, many existing nowhere else on the planet.

The result is Archipelago. With its more than 300 stunning images, the book illustrates the spectacular diversity of these ocean and island creatures, as well as profiles many of the people dedicated to the preservation of this habitat. The inaccessibility of these islands and the need to protect them means that few people will ever be able to visit them in person, though now, for the first time, the area's inhabitants are available for all the world to see through this important body of work. In conjunction with the publication of Archipelago, exhibitions of these photographs will be mounted in Honolulu and Washington, and will then travel to venues around the country throughout 2006.

Surprising answers to the question: What if your dog were human?

What dog owner hasn’t done this? You anthropomorphize your four-legged friend, put thoughts and feelings into his or her head that he or she almost certainly doesn’t have, and basically turn your pet into a four-legged person. That is exactly how photographer Sandra Müller feels about her dog Maja — who inspired Dog People — the book that provides hilarious and creative photographic answers to the question: “What kind of person would this dog be?” Whether it’s Great Dane Holly as a couch potato or “Gismo” riding a Harley, these images and more make up the unforgettable and endearing collection of portraits of man’s best friend in Dog People.

“No, this book is not meant to be a fashion show for dogs and dog owners. This book is simply a thought experiment: what kind of person would my dog be? And let’s be honest: who hasn’t given his or her dog a lengthy explanation which the dog seems to listen to raptly but surely doesn’t understand every word of? Yes, yes, I know…YOUR dog understands every word! So does mine!” (Sandra Müller, photographer/author of Dog People)

The book is a colorful parade of dogs, from Giant Schnauzers to Pugs, from registered purebreds to street mutts. There is also a humorous description of each dog explaining how the outfit was chosen to make the particular animal a Dog Man or Dog Lady. For example, take “Gisbert,” a Pug who would surely be a doctor if he were human — as he loves his vet so much that all you have to do is say “Dr. Uwe” and he pricks his ears — as much as any Pug can prick his ears, at least.

Dog People shows us 83 wonderful dog portraits – from a purebred Standard Schnauzer to a street mutt – and a panoply of human characters.

About the Author:

Sandra Muller, who is now 23, bought her first SLR camera at 14. She has been a big animal lover since childhood – from guinea pigs to her aunt’s dog, with whom she spent entire summer vacations. Today, she is the proud owner of Maja, the “most beautiful Bernese Mountain Dog mix in the world,” (of course, she is in the book!) and has found her calling in photography. She specializes in portraits of people and dogs. She feels it is very important to capture the unique personality of each of her subjects, two-legged or four-legged, in each shot. Sandra Müller lives in Haimendorf (near Nuremberg), Germany.
