Jewelry’s Shining Stars: The Next Generation brings together 45 new women designers who have liberated the way we view and buy jewellery. This compilation of talented women, who hail from around the globe, use techniques such as enamelling, engraving, and creating nuanced textural details in wax models, to bend the rules and break with tradition. While some work with their own hands, whether schooled or self-taught, challenging themselves at the bench, others work alongside artisans to reinvigorate the old school into relevant yet enduring pieces.

The book’s stunning photographs offer a glimpse into each designer’s different aesthetic and are accompanied by the jeweller’s own words, revealing what drives their approach and giving us an insight behind these innovators. With reverence for quality, style, and technique, these 45 talented jewellers are creating today’s collectibles and shaping jewellery’s future.

Clare Phillips

Издательство: Thames & Hudson

An impeccably researched and inspiring insight into the evolution of jewellery through the ages, explored through exquisite photography of pieces drawn from the V&A’s outstanding collection

Jewels and Jewellery surveys splendid early medieval and Renaissance pieces and superb examples of Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau and 21st-century jewellery. Exquisitely detailed photography reveals both rare and precious stones as well as the elaborate techniques of the jeweller’s craft such as chasing, enamelling and cameo. Among the ‘star’ pieces are the diamond and sapphire coronet designed by Prince Albert for Queen Victoria, and the Papillon ring by London jeweller G, donated to the Victoria and Albert Museum in 2018 by Beyoncé, alongside a multitude of dazzling rings, brooches, earrings and tiaras.

Clare Phillips considers the history of Western jewellery in three parts, first exploring the materials used by jewellers, then turning to the development of styles in jewellery from the Middle Ages to today, before examining the ways in which jewellery has been hallmarked, distributed and worn over recent centuries. Showcasing pieces by Cartier, Tiffany and Liberty, this beautiful volume is the ultimate guide to the history of Western jewellery.

Stellene Volandes
ID: 14238
Издательство: Rizzoli

The history of the world -- triumphs and tragedies, breakthroughs and breakups -- through the iconic jewels that have inspired and influenced since the dawn of time.

From ancient treasures to royal weddings, great heists to the red carpet, this book is a stunning, surprising, and glittering tour of historic turning points and gem-driven drama, delving into the passions and predilections of some of the world's most interesting and extraordinary people.

Starting in the era of Cleopatra and continuing through to contemporary jewelry statements by Jennifer Lopez, Lady Gaga, and Meghan Markle, Stellene Volandes tells the stories of how shiny stones and precious metals have determined empires, inspired expeditions and great crime, and been the communicator of status and ruin since ancient times. Each moment is placed in historic and relevant context, with Volandes drawing engaging parallels between Napoleon's gift to Marie Louise at the birth of their son and the modern push present or the insouciant story behind the brooch Jackie Kennedy famously wore to a 1962 State Dinner with the Shah of Iran. Illustrated with a mix of archival images and gorgeous photography of the jewels, this book is a beautiful, informative, and essential read for history lovers, fashion, celebrity, and pop-culture followers, as well as passionate jewel hounds.

About the Author:

Stellene Volandes is an internationally renowned expert in jewelry. In addition to writing about jewellery for Town & Country (where she is also editor-in-chief), she hosts a series at the 92nd Street Y on jewels and their history. Her first book, Jeweler, was published by Rizzoli in 2016.

The first major monograph on Turner Prize–nominated Glasgow artist Jim Lambie.

This long-awaited volume surveys the career of Glasgow-based contemporary sculptor Jim Lambie. From his distinctive floor works, striped from wall to wall with vibrant electrical tape, to his paint-soaked mattresses, Lambie adroitly sculpts humor and pathos from the clutter of modern life. Working with items immediately at hand, as well as those sourced in secondhand and hardware stores, he resurrects record decks, speakers, clothing, accessories, doors, and mirrors to form sculptural elements in larger compositions.

Lambie prioritizes sensory pleasure over intellectual response. He selects materials that are familiar and have a strong personal resonance, so that they offer a way into the work as well as a springboard to a psychological space beyond. This volume not only serves as a definitive mid-career survey but also as a major reframing of the artist’s work. Lambie’s practice has long been understood through the lens of punk and rock music, a frequent theme of his works’ titles. Here the artist and new essays instead trace his approach to the rich material histories he mines and the scrappy, resourceful spirit of his hometown, Glasgow.

About the Author:

Daniel Baumann is the director of Kunsthalle Zürich. He previously served as curator of the Adolf Wölfli Foundation, located at the Museum of Fine Arts in Bern, Switzerland.

Jim Shaw, Jessica Beck, Rachel Kushner, Jonathan Lethem
ID: 17275
Издательство: Rizzoli

Thinking the Unthinkable documents Jim Shaw’s inaugural exhibition with Gagosian and features an essay by Jessica Beck, new fiction from Jonathan Lethem, and a conversation between the artist and Rachel Kushner.

For over three decades, Jim Shaw has found inspiration in comics, pulp novels, album covers, and amateur paintings. His densely layered and humorous works span painting, drawing, and sculpture, and juxtapose images of friends, family, and dreams, with world events, pop culture, and alternative realities.

Published to coincide with Thinking the Unthinkable (2023) in Beverly Hills, Shaw’s first exhibition with Gagosian, this expansive and vibrantly illustrated catalogue delves into the secret histories of psychedelic therapy, Hollywood legend, and nuclear war—themes that all coalesce in the artist’s recent works.

An essay by Gagosian director Jessica Beck discusses Shaw’s hallucinogenic depictions of Cary Grant, Esther Williams, and Jeff Chandler. A conversation with author Rachel Kushner ranges from the artist’s formative years to the early weaponization of LSD. In Jim Shaw Kills, new fiction written by Jonathan Lethem, a miniaturized version of Shaw is dispatched into the comatose body of an ex-president.

About the Authors:

Jim Shaw (b. 1952) lives and works in Los Angeles. He has had exhibitions at museums including CAPC musée d'art contemporain de Bordeaux, France; MASS MoCA, North Adams, MA; and New Museum, New York. His work is held in the collections of the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Museo Jumex, Mexico City; and Centre Pompidou, Paris, amongst others.

Jessica Beck is a director at Gagosian. Formerly, she was the Milton Fine curator of art at the Andy Warhol Museum, Pittsburgh, where she curated many projects, most notably Andy Warhol: My Perfect Body (2016).

Rachel Kushner is the author of Telex from Cuba (2008), The Flamethrowers (2013), and The Mars Room (2018). She won the Prix Médicis Etranger (2018), was a Guggenheim Fellow (2013), and the recipient of the Harold D. Vursell Memorial Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters (2016).

Jimmy Page
ID: 18768
Издательство: Genesis Publications

“Within the contents of this book, I wanted to include items from my personal archive that have played a part in my career over 60 years, to illustrate the detail behind the detail.” - Jimmy Page

From his early days as a young session musician, through his years on the world stage with Led Zeppelin, to his solo work and collaborations, Jimmy Page has lived a spectacular life in music. Throughout it all, he has amassed an extensive private archive of iconic guitars, stage costumes and personal memorabilia.

Now, in The Anthology, Jimmy Page is granting exclusive access to his archive for the first time, and telling the inside story of his phenomenal career.

In a new text of over 70,000 words, Jimmy Page guides the reader through hundreds of rare items, many of which are previously unseen, and others of mythic status, such as the Gibson double neck guitar, his dragon-emblazoned suit, his white embroidered poppy suit, and the outfit worn in the concert film The Song Remains the Same.

Also included are handwritten diaries, correspondence, rare vinyl pressings, previously unpublished photographs and much, much more. Jimmy Page has personally selected each piece to be photographed in this book, which has been created with his full participation.

The result is Jimmy Page: The Anthology. Both reflective and revealing, it is quite simply the legendary musician’s most comprehensive and fascinating account of his life to date.

About the Author:

Jimmy Page, OBE, is widely considered to be one of the greatest and most influential guitarists of all time, and one of the most important record producers and songwriters in rock history. Page first picked up a guitar aged 12 and performed with Neil Christian and the Crusaders as soon as he left school. He honed his craft as a session musician in London and, by the mid-Sixties, was one of the most sought-after guitarists in Britain. He was a member of the Yardbirds from 1966-1968 and then, in late 1968, founded Led Zeppelin, one of rock’s most successful and enduring bands, who have sold more than 300 million records to date.

Following Led Zeppelin, in the 1980s Page went on to produce a film soundtrack, Death Wish II, toured with Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck on the fundraising A.R.M.S. tour, formed bands the Firm and Coverdale Page, and released a solo album, Outrider. From 1994-1998 Page reunited with Led Zeppelin bandmate Robert Plant on two albums and two tours as Page and Plant. Since then, Page has collaborated on a wide range of projects, including performing with Sean Coombes, the Black Crowes and at the closing ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics with Leona Lewis. Jimmy Page has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, once as a member of the Yardbirds (1992) and once as a member of Led Zeppelin (1995). In 2005, Page received an OBE from the Queen, then also received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Surrey (2008); in 2012 he received America’s highest award for the arts, the Kennedy Center Honors, from President Barack Obama at the White House and an Honorary Doctorate from Berklee College, Boston (2014). More recently, Page produced and remastered Led Zeppelin’s nine studio albums with companion discs, rereleased in 2014 and 2015, and in 2019, the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s remarkable ‘Play It Loud’ exhibition featured some of his most iconic guitars.

A revealing look at the evolution of male iconography in the work of one of the foremost painters of his generation.

Since raising the ire of the early-1990s arts establishment with his deliberately provocative portrayals of women, John Currin has been best known for his brazen, militantly incorrect female iconography. Yet Currin has represented a range of masculine identities throughout his career as well.

This volume is the first to focus exclusively on this aspect of his work, examining the evolution of his equally provocative depictions of men. It ranges from little-known early works on paper and a series of kitschy paintings of men with beards to signature eccentric figures such as the elderly reader in the painting 2070 (2005) and his more baroque genre scenes featuring male couples. Published to accompany the exhibition John Currin: My Life as a Man at the Dallas Contemporary, it offers a revealing new assessment of Currin's pictorial examinations of sexual politics.

The Architecture of Empathy is the title of a marble statue by John Isaacs and at the same time the basic attitude and raw material of all his works. The British artist made a name for himself as a Young British Artist around Damien Hirst in the 1990s with his hyper-realistic wax sculptures. Conscious about not locking himself into one style, he experiments with a wide variety of materials and techniques, from ceramics, neon, bronze, marble and sculpture to photography. This richly illustrated publication is the first comprehensive overview of his work from the 90s to the present, and reveals not just his broad reaching multifaceted technical scope, but also his psycho-anthropological poetic through numerous essays and conversations with companions.

Longtime music icon John Mellencamp’s artistic expression has never been limited to song.

The acclaimed singer-songwriter John Mellencamp has been an accomplished painter for more than four decades. This definitive survey — curated by Mellencamp himself — of his large-scale oil portraits and mixed-media assemblages documents America’s heart and soul, revealing unsettling but beautiful truths with an antiestablishment frown and a rich sense of narrative.

“Although we may primarily know Mellencamp as a rock star, one of the highest-selling of all time and a Hall of Famer, he is also a great painter, as this book shows. Not a musician who also paints... No, John legitimately belongs in the modern art pantheon,” says Bob Guccione Jr. in his essay that delineates the connection of Mellencamp’s music and art, both imbued with the earnest voice of America’s heartland.

John Pai
ID: 15859
Издательство: Rizzoli

The first comprehensive monograph on the master contemporary Korean American sculptor, from his seminal wire sculptures to his never-before-seen early works formed of steel.

John Pai (b. 1937) is a prolific multimedia artist whose handmade three-dimensional sculptures are, paradoxically, still objects that seem to exist in a state of movement and transformation. This full-career survey of Pai’s inventive work consists of his rarely seen early work up to the present.

Pai’s incredibly intricate, three-dimensional abstract “drawings in space” are made of endless lengths of individual steel or copper rods and textured sheets made from hundreds of rods welded together. Unlike many contemporary sculptors who draw a sketch and let metalworkers do the actual construction, Pai continues to do all his work himself ― from choosing the materials to the labor-intensive process of welding and bending the metals into complex and sometimes massive forms.

Immigrating from Korea to the US at age 11, Pai showed his prodigious talent for art at a young age. He received a scholarship to attend Pratt Institute, and in the 1960s, Pai became the youngest professor appointed to the faculty at Pratt. Leading its fine arts and sculpture programs for nearly four decades, Pai proved a talented and beloved educator, nurturing generations of sculptors and fostering the burgeoning Korean artistic community in New York with those such as his contemporary Nam June Paik, reflecting a sensibility outside the mainstream of American art.

About the Authors:

John Yau is an award-winning poet and art critic who has been publishing art criticism since 1978. He is a professor of critical studies at Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University. Carter Ratcliff
ID: 8673
Издательство: Abbeville Press

The classic monograph on a much-loved artist — reissued in a spectacular oversize format

In the early work of John Singer Sargent (1856–1925), Henry James saw “the slightly ‘uncanny’ spectacle of a talent which on the threshold of its career has nothing more to learn.” Sargent’s talent, nay, genius was indeed uncanny, sustained with equal intensity through his famed society portraits, like the scandalous Madame X; his full-size showpieces, like The Daughters of Edward Darley Boit; his thousands of watercolors executed en plein air from Venice to Corfu to Maine to Montana; and his ambitious mural decorations for the public monuments of Boston.

In Carter Ratcliff, Sargent has found a biographer and critic of fitting style and subtlety. Ratcliff expertly evokes the expatriate American milieu into which the artist was born, and offers penetrating insights into every phase of his career and every aspect of his work. Now, for the first time, this landmark monograph is offered in a special oversize format, with all of its 310 illustrations reproduced in full color, many at full-page size. It also includes a new preface by the author and an updated bibliography.

About the Author:

Carter Ratcliff is a poet, art critic, and contributing editor of Art in America. His books on art include The Fate of a Gesture: Jackson Pollock and Postwar American ArtOut of the Box: The Reinvention of Art; and monographs on Andy Warhol, Georgia O’Keeffe, Gilbert & George, and others. He has also published numerous volumes of poetry and a novel, Tequila Mockingbird.

Squaring the Square

Josef Albers’s groundbreaking series Homage to the Square comprises roughly two thousand oil paintings. His continuous reflections and refinements for more than 25 years inspired numerous young minimal and conceptual artists in their search for a reduced formal language. This outstanding catalogue explores the secret of Albers’s subtle aesthetic and unearths its preconditions: What is the significance of the square? How does his impression of color and its use as a material change during this period? Featuring studies on paper, archival materials, as well as essays by internationally leading Albers experts such as Jeannette Redensek and Heinz Liesbrock, this richly illustrated publication sheds light on the various inspirations that influenced Albers early on in Europe and later in America, and illustrates the lasting impact of his art and thinking.

As an influential teacher, writer, painter, and color theorist Josef Albers (1888, Bottrop–1976, New Haven, CT) is one of the leading pioneers of twentieth-century modernism. From 1923 onwards he taught at the Bauhaus, and continued to do so after his emigration to the USA in 1933 at Black Mountain College in North Carolina, and at Yale University, where he worked on his Homage to the Square from 1950 until his death.

Heinz Liesbrock (*1953) was the long-standing director of the Josef Albers Museum Quadrat in Bottrop. He has written extensively on Albers and his influence on art history.

Encompassing the entire career of the American surrealist painter Kay Sage, this catalogue raisonné features all her known mature works and the latest scholarship on a brilliant artist.

While her career as a painter was often eclipsed during her lifetime by that of her husband, Yves Tanguy, recent scholarship posits that the influence was mutual and that Kay Sage’s work was distinct from Tanguy’s. The full extent of Sage’s talent is laid bare in this stunning slip-cased book that includes many works that have not been viewed publicly since the 1940s and 1950s. An insightful essay explores Sage’s involvement with the Surrealists and her marriage to Tanguy, as a partner and sounding board. A generously illustrated chronology includes personal and archival material that reveals much about her life and practice. The paintings, collages, and works on paper — haunting, evocative, and original — are reproduced to full effect, each with comprehensive provenance and exhibition history. Impeccably researched and engagingly written, this monograph brings to life an intrepid and hugely gifted artist whose talent is long overdue for recognition.

About the Authors:

Jessie Sentivan is an independent art historian and curator. She has held positions at the Williams College Museum of Art and the Arthur Dove Catalogue Raisonné Project, and was a contributing editor of the Hans Hofmann Catalogue Raisonné of Paintings.

Stephen Robeson Miller has written extensively about Kay Sage and her art in publications such as Art International, Dada & Surrealism, and various galleries catalogues around the world. He was co-curator of the landmark traveling exhibition Double Solitaire: The Surreal Worlds of Kay Sage and Yves Tanguy in 2011. He is also the author of Kay Sage: The Biographical Chronology and Four Surrealist One-Act Plays. His research papers on Sage, including interviews, are located at the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution.

Haring as activist and egalitarian: a fresh, accessible and dynamic look at one of New York’s most exhilarating artists.

Lavishly illustrated with essays and reflections by cultural leaders, Keith Haring: Art Is for Everybody surveys Haring’s dynamic art practice from 1978 to 1990, shining a bright light on the iconic and beloved artist known for his fluid, uniform lines, intricate compositions and repeating imagery such as the barking dog and radiant baby. Forty years after he came to prominence, Haring’s art continues to garner worldwide recognition, breaking down barriers and spreading joy, while taking on complex issues that remain crucial today, from environmentalism, capitalism and the proliferation of new technologies to religion, sexuality and race.

Titled after a quote from Haring’s journals, Art Is for Everybody centers on the artist’s activism, the emphasis he placed on community and his egalitarian approach to art and life. The volume is organized chronologically and thematically, emphasizing Haring’s work made with publics in mind such as the subway drawings and murals, his collaborative practice and his unflinching belief that art is essential in making a better world.

Keith Haring was born in Reading, Pennsylvania, in 1958 and arrived in New York from Pittsburgh in 1978, befriending artists including Kenny Scharf and Jean-Michel Basquiat. During the 1980s, Haring achieved international recognition and participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions. After contracting HIV in 1988, he focused his activism on the AIDS crisis. Less than two years later, Haring died of an AIDS-related illness.
