Jennifer Sudul Edwards, Anne Ellegood and Jennifer Krasinski, Diedrick Brackens
ID: 16443
Издательство: Rizzoli

The Future (and past) is Female: Summer Wheat’s whimsical, often tongue-in-cheek tableaux in rich jewel tones punctuated with bright neons, teem with fantastical figures that memorialize tribes of women hunting, collaborating, celebrating, and ultimately replacing millennia of images of male rulers and warriors.

Summer Wheat’s unique formative experiences with art growing up in Oklahoma were shaped by the aesthetic and conceptual drive of Native American art and Indigenous culture. Bridging those early influences with the canon of Western art (from ancient art to medieval tapestries) and popular references such as astrology and comic books, the artist’s work centers female archetypes in her expansive practice of painting, sculpture, and large-scale installation.

For the artist’s first monograph, curator Jennifer Sudul Edwards discusses the wide range of subjects that inform Wheat’s work, including the artist’s interest in alchemy. Curator Anne Ellegood in conversation with the artist discusses Wheat’s sculptural work, large-scale installations, and first foray into building a freestanding architectural space. Jennifer Krasinski explores Wheat’s unique approach to painting; her impressive wall works resemble a cross between intricate beadwork and the pixel-like structure of a digital image.

About the Author:

Jennifer Sudul Edwards, PhD, is the Chief Curator and Curator of Contemporary Art at the Mint Museum in Charlotte. Jennifer Krasinski has written on the subject of art, film, video, and performance for numerous publications such as Artforum, Art in America, and Bidoun, among many others. Anne Ellegood is the Executive Director of the Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (ICA LA). Diedrick Brackens is an artist best known for his woven tapestries.

This beautifully illustrated new volume on the Surrealist movement uncovers the influence magic, myth and the occult had on its development.

Like no other 20th-century movement, Surrealism was keenly inspired by tropes of magic, myth and the occult. In their engagement with the irrational and the unconscious, numerous of its members looked to magic as a poetic and deeply philosophical discourse, related to both arcane knowledge and individual self-empowerment. In their works, they heavily drew on esoteric symbols and cultivated the image of the artist as a magician, visionary, and alchemist. This catalog explores the myriad ways, in which magic and the occult informed the development of the Surrealist movement in international perspective, from the “metaphysical paintings” of Giorgio de Chirico through to works of the post-war period. Lavishly illustrated, it combines longer research essays with focused chapter introductions, all penned by leading scholars in the field.

Amongst the many fascinating artists included in the volume are Victor Brauner, Leonora Carrington, Salvador Dalí, Paul Delvaux, Enrico Donati, Max Ernst, Leonor Fini, Wifredo Lam, René Magritte, Roberto Matta, Roland Penrose, Kay Sage, Kurt Seligmann, Dorothea Tanning, Yves Tanguy, and Remedios Varo.

Sophie Calle

Издательство: Actes Sud

‘I received an email telling me it was over. I didn’t know how to respond. It was as if it wasn’t meant for me. It ended with the words: "Take Care of Yourself". I took this recommendation literally. I asked a hundred and two women, chosen for their profession, to interpret the letter in their professional capacity. To analyse it, provide a commentary on it, act it, dance it, sing it. Dissect it. Squeeze it dry. Understand for me. Answer for me. It was a way to take the time to break up. At my own pace. A way to take care of myself.’

This superbly designed book accompanied Sophie Calle’s exhibition in the French pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2007. It comprises three books – one main volume, two smaller inside that – and four accompanying DVDs

Includes 107 interpretations by a range of successful female professionals, from leading actors and dancers to physicists, psychoanalysts and lawyers.

About the Author:

Sophie Calle (born 1953) is an internationally renowned artist whose controversial works often fuse conceptual art and Oulipo-like constraints, investigatory methods and the plundering of autobiography. Her work has been shown at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Hayward Gallery and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, among others. Costume design is storytelling. And to do it successfully, you need to understand the five functions of a costume: to connect to plot and theme, establish the structure of society, put in a specific time and place, indicate personality, and reveal a passage of time. It is an exciting and challenging craft that involves a thoughtful and thorough examination of these various elements in order to give a costume life. In animation, games, and illustration, in particular, the designer needs to be acutely aware of the unique characteristics and limitations of each medium ― from solid research approaches and basic production pipelines to audience experience and ideal tools of the trade.

Talking Threads: Costume Design for Entertainment Art, backed by decades of experience of five industry professionals, provides an in-depth exploration of these functions and format considerations to equip artists with the necessary knowledge and mindset to develop strong narrative-informed costume designs. Each chapter is packed with creative exercises, detailed tutorials, inspiring designs, and invaluable insights that will help artists of all levels confidently and efficiently tackle their next costume adventure.

About the Authors:

Jessie Kate is a design mentor. With her background working with her father, a master craftsman and furniture designer, she gained experience with complex creative problem-solving. Her mother's musical focus nurtured a love of entertainment, and Jessie Kate combined the two influences to choose a path in entertainment design. Her past experience includes freelance design, educational program design, production coordination for TV animation, creative direction for startups, and indie project development. When she brought her curiosity and analytical approach to the animation industry and found a gap in costume-design education, Jessie Kate decided to fill the void by gathering a team of specialists to create this book. She specializes in using personality psychology to develop authentic character arcs and immersive costume designs, guiding her mentees through narrative analysis, practical research methodology, and concept development.Jessie Kate co-instructs History of Fashion at ArtCenter College of Design with Gwyn Conaway.

Gwyn Conaway is a member of the Costume Designers Guild Local 892. She's a costume designer, fashion historian, and culture specialist living in southern California. Although she works primarily in historical and dramatic film, Gwyn also consults on costume simulation for major animation and gaming studios. She specializes in Marvelous Designer and garment model fit.Considered an authority on the intersection between clothing and social psychology, Gwyn is on the cutting edge of how the entertainment industry thinks about costume and culture as a visual language. She is often called upon to design and consult for conceptual projects in post-apocalyptic and fantasy settings. Conaway is on the faculty at ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, California. Her course, History of Fashion, is the first of its kind. Geared directly towards entertainment design students, the class explores Gwyn's burgeoning expertise: building cultures for film, television, and gaming from the ground up.

Rebecca Black-Gliko descends from a long line of quilters and has been sewing in some form or another since a very young age. Her devotion to learning led to a degree in illustration as well as studying abroad in Japan and New Zealand. Beki has worked for Laika Studios on the films Kubo and the Two Strings and Missing Link in both the rapid prototype and costume departments. Living in Oregon with her husband, Raul Ramos, she continues to work on projects that explore and combine a variety of mediums. She is currently working on a stop-motion graphic novel, Oni-san, that combines her love of animation, illustration, and stop-motion. Beki enjoys the challenge of translating a design on paper into a functional final product--whether the end result is digital or physical--and choosing the format that best translates the intentions of the narrative.

Maria Kercher is a visual development artist specializing in material behavior and cultural stylization for animation. She has also worked in design for indie games and illustration for live-action films. Born and raised in Brazil, Maria visited the opera and ballet frequently and participated in dance and figure skating competitions, nurturing a fascination with how costumes are used to enhance performance. Through figure skating, she gained an interest in how countries or people can be represented through simplified shapes, colors, movement, and music. Learning to sew from her mother, she began exploring her fascination through fashion. When her father introduced her to US animation, Maria fell in love with the idea of breathing life into a fictional world and came to the US to study animation. Now based in Seattle, Washington, she is focused on expanding her knowledge of materials and world cultures to better connect audiences to each other.

Blythe Russo is an illustrator and puppet builder living in Ohio. A compelling exploration of Tantric rituals and spirituality, published to coincide with a once-in-a-generation exhibition at the British Museum

Tantra: enlightenment to revolution explores the radical force that transformed the religious, cultural and political landscape of India and beyond.

A philosophy originating in medieval India, Tantra has been linked to successive waves of revolutionary thought – from its sixth-century transformation of Hinduism and Buddhism, to the Indian fight for independence and the rise of 1960s counterculture.

Presenting masterpieces of sculpture, painting, prints and ritual objects from India, Tibet and around the world, this publication offers new insights into a philosophy that has captured our imagination for more than a millennium.

Andrey A. Tarkovsky, Hans-Joachim Schlegel, Lothar Schirmer
ID: 12488
Издательство: Thames & Hudson

A monograph on Andrey Tarkovsky, Russian filmmaker, writer, film editor and film theorist of extraordinary influence and cinematic vision

Andrey Tarkovsky was the most important Russian filmmaker of the post-war era, and one of the world’s most renowned cinematic geniuses. He directed the first five of his seven films – Ivan’s Childhood, Andrei Rublev, Solaris, Mirror and Stalker – in the Soviet Union, but in 1982 defected to Italy, where he made Nostalgia. His final film, The Sacrifice, was produced in Sweden in 1985. Tarkovsky’s films are characterized by metaphysical themes, extended takes, an absence of conventional dramatical structure and plot, and a dream-like, visionary style of cinematography. They achieve a spiritual intensity and transcendent beauty that many consider to be without parallel.

This book presents extended sequences of stills from each of the films alongside synopses and cast and crew listings. It includes reflections on Tarkovsky’s work from fellow artists and writers including Jean-Paul Sartre and Ingmar Bergman, for whom Tarkovsky was ‘the greatest, the one who invented a new language.’ Extracts from Tarkovsky’s own writings and diaries offer a wealth of insights into his poetic and philosophical views on cinematography, which he described as ‘sculpting in time’. The book also reproduces many personal Polaroid photographs that confirm the extraordinary poetic vision of a great artist who died aged only 54, but who remains a potent influence on artists and filmmakers today.

About the Authors:

Andrey A. Tarkovsky is the son of filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky.

Hans-Joachim Schlegel is a film historian and the editor and translator of the writings of Sergei Eisenstein and Andrei Tarkovsky.

Lothar Schirmer is a German publisher and art collector.
