A Mosaic of Femininity

Founded in 1984 by women around Gabriele Stötzer, the Erfurt Women Artists’ Group pursued a radically creative lifestyle to counter the rigid structures of everyday life in the GDR, over a period of ten years. Subversive, witty, borne of a liberating sense of defiance against normative gender roles, their artistic expressions provide an insight into the little-known feminist subculture in the GDR. Their pioneering role in terms of an exploration of female identity is particularly reflected through five experimental Super 8 films, subsequent live performances, and fashion-object shows. Often unfolding intuitively from sequences of audio, dance, and literary elements, self-created and provocative costumes that served as alter egos of the artists took center stage. Their political commitment culminated in December 1989 in the first occupation of a Stasi, State Security Service, headquarters, initiated by five women, three of whom were part of the group.

This new monograph is the most comprehensive book on the work of Paul Resika (b. 1928) to date, highlighting his landscapes, portraits, and still lifes from the 1940s to the present. Resika's most important teacher was Hans Hofmann, with whom he studied on Cape Cod and in New York City in the mid-forties.

Born in Iran to a family with a long history of dealing in Persian carpets, perhaps it was inevitable that Essie Sakhai should become a respected expert on Oriental and Persian carpets, gaining much of his great knowledge from his father Benayahoo Sakhai. Essie lives in North London, though he spends most of his time at Essie Carpets on the corner of Albemarle Street and Piccadilly in London's Mayfair, carrying on the family tradition started in the 18th century. Essie is a true enthusiast and hopes through his extensive lectures, interviews and writing (his previous books include The Story of Carpets, which has been translated into many languages, The Buyers' Guide, and Persian Rugs and Carpets: The Fabric of Life) to share his knowledge and passion for carpets with a wider audience.

Since his emergence in the early 1960s as a key member of the Pop Art movement, Peter Blake has become one of the best-known and most popular artists of his generation. Though primarily a painter, he has worked across many media, from drawings, watercolours and collages to sculpture and printmaking, as well as commercial art in the form of graphics and album covers – most notably his design for The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper album in 1967.

Marco Livingstone is an art historian, writer and independent curator who has written extensively on post-war painting and sculpture, particularly on Pop Art and figurative painting. His many publications include books and museum catalogues on David Hockney, Patrick Caulfield, R.B. Kitaj, Allen Jones, Clive Barker, Paula Rego, Peter Kinley, Adrian Berg, Duane Michals, Jim Dine, Tom Wesselmann, George Segal, Duane Hanson and Caroline Walker. Livingstone’s Hockney’s Portraits and People won the Sir Banister Fletcher Award for best book on the arts, and his other publications include Pop Art: A Continuing History, David Hockney and The Essential Duane Michals, all published by Thames & Hudson.
