The author:
Adam Lindemann is a private investor and influential collector of contemporary art and design. In partnership with designer Marc Newson, he re-launched Ikepod, a Swiss watch design company. He also writes a monthly column on collecting for The New York Observer.

Italian Renaissance art is closely intertwined with the development of courts and court culture in much of the Italian territory. The patronage of the ruling families of the small Italian city-states greatly favoured the flourishing of the figurative arts and architecture, but also in music, literature, and theatre.

The book starts with an introduction by Marco Folin, the volume's editor, on the critical issues of court art and its historiography, followed by an important essay on the historical and geographical framework of Renaissance Italy, illustrated by 18 especially-made maps, useful to understand the complexity and fragmentation of the country in the 15th century. The role of princely patronage in the development of music and literature is then examined: from the place of the humanists at court to the link between music and propaganda, from the first theatrical representations to the rise of the printing press and the publication of the most famous Renaissance books: Castiglione's Book of the Courtier and Ariosto's Orlando Furioso.

The second, longer part of the volume, is arranged geographically and covers the entire peninsula, giving attention not only to the major courts, such as Milan, Mantua, Ferrara, Urbino, papal Rome, Naples and the crypto-court of the Medicis in Florence, but devoting chapters to the minor courts spread around northern and central Italy, from the Paleologues rulers of Montferrat to the Malatesta court in Rimini, from Carpi under the Pios to the Orsinis' rule in Bracciano.

The main chapters are enriched by texts focused on particular aspects of Renaissance culture and politics: the courts of the cardinals and the southern barons, the patronage of the condottieri, the specificity of Venetian state-commissions, etc.

The essays are written by well-known Italian scholars - such as Franco Piperno on music, Rinaldo Rinaldi on literature, Alessandro Cecchi on Medicean Florence and Alessandro Angelini on the papal court in Rome - and are accompanied by a rich and accurate iconography, showing not only famous masterpieces but also lesser known works of art and architecture.

The book is completed by an annotated bibliography for the various chapters and by an index of names and places.

Dadaism: the forerunner of conceptual art

Liberation was in the air, men were rushing to the moon, and the sky was the limit as far as visual creativity was concerned. The concept of lifestyle really came into its own, and although the early years of the decade still saw a rivalry between the well-crafted object and industrial manufacture, by its end both ethnic and pop iconography had gained equal foothold in the aesthetic. Light was also pedominant in shaping interiors. Freedom of choice and personal expression were the buzzwords for the young consumer, and so the likes of Pasmore, Panton, Safdie, Sottsass, Paolozzi, and Lomazzi did what they could to oblige.

This book accompanies the first major museum exhibition devoted to a reconstruction of the infamous Nazi display of modern art since the presentation originated by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 1991.

]During the Nazi regime in Germany, “degenerate art” was the official term for much of the most important modern art of the day. “Degenerate art” was defined by the Nazi regime as artwork that was not in line with the National Socialists’ ideas of beauty. Their condemnation extended to works in nearly every major art movement: Expressionism, Dada, New Objectivity, Surrealism, Cubism, and Fauvism. Banned artists included Max Beckmann, Paul Klee, and Oskar Kokoschka. Richly illustrated, Degenerate Art elucidates the historical and intellectual context of the notorious exhibition in Munich in 1937, which spurred the attack on modern art.

The book contains reflections on the genesis and evolution of the term “degenerate art” and details of the National Socialist policy on art. Art works from the exhibition Degenerate Art are compared to works of art from The Great German Art Exhibition, which was held at the same time and displayed the works of officially approved artists. The book also presents the after-effects of the attack on modernism that are felt even today.

Olaf Peters is Professor of Modern Art at Martin Luther University in Halle-Wittenberg and the author of Degenerate Art: The Attack on Modern Art in Nazi Germany 1937 and Berlin Metropolis: 1918-1933 (both by Prestel).

Readymade man. The anticonformist visionary

Marcel Duchamp (1887–1968), revolutionary artist, inventor of readymades, obsessive chess player, and master of the silent statement succeeded at the beginning of the 20th century to query art in its traditional form. His creations, not least his readymades such as the famous Fountain (a "reclaimed" urinal) or the Bottle Rack, are subversive and radical upshots of a critical confrontation with the production and marketing of art in the industrial age. While the young Duchamp still admired Monet, Fauvism, and Cubism, and for a while was quite closely aligned with the Dadaists and Surrealists, before long his work broke new ground and helped redefine art as we know it today.

The fact that Duchamp wanted to ensure that the self-irony and doubt, particularly in his own works, were constructively understood is best shown in one of his few statements on the subject: “I force myself to contradict myself in order to avoid conforming to my own taste.” Duchamp has long been an enigma to art historians while a great source of inspiration to other artists. This study addresses the myth and the reality, revealing a compelling portrait of Marcel Duchamp, the man and the artist.
