FAILE
ID: 9262
Издательство: Gestalten
The latest book from the vanguard American urban artists.

This book presents FAILE's most complex and ambitious project to date - a large-scale, temporary installation of a temple created for Portugal Arte 10. The vanguard American urban artists masterfully translate familiar elements and themes from the contemporary prints, graphic design, and paintings for which they are best known into decorative frescoes and sculptures for a structure inspired by the ruins of a Baroque chapel.

The duo of American artists known as FAILE have established themselves along with Banksy and Shepard Fairey as the leading figures in urban art. They are best known for their prints, graphic design, and paintings, which have been exhibited in museums and have been sold successfully by renowned galleries such as Gagosian and Lazarides. Their monograph FAILE: Prints + Originals 1999-2009, which we released in the fall of 2010, sold out immediately after it was published.

Now, FAILE Temple presents the New York-based artists’ most complex and ambitious project to date. For the Portugal Arte 10 festival, they created a large-scale, temporary installation of a temple on Lisbon’s Praça de Restauradores. Although inspired by the ruins of a Baroque chapel, its decorative frescoes and sculptures feature familiar elements from Faile’s contemporary oeuvre.

The temple project gave FAILE a unique opportunity to reinterpret and delve deeper into the core themes of their art - consumerism, globalization, and the tension between classical art and the profane.

FAILE Temple not only documents the finished project in all its fascinating detail, but also features images of its construction and installation as well as pieces that inspired its design. An insightful text about FAILE’s work by the art journalist W. Ian Bourland rounds out the publication.

Faile
ID: 12808
Издательство: Gestalten

This new publication about the artistic collaboration Faile documents its work with the medium of wood.

Together, Patrick McNeil and Patrick Miller are Faile. Although their art has its roots on the street, their work clearly demonstrates that street art no longer solely belongs there. What began on city walls and asphalt is now shown, with much success, in galleries and museums and can be found in living rooms and on everyday objects. In their numerous projects, activities, exhibitions, and images, Faile shows how much fun art can be and how much fun they have making it.

Patrick McNeil and Patrick Miller have been working with wood since they founded Faile in 1999. Now, Faile: Works on Wood showcases their exploration of wood as an integral material in their practice from past to present. The book follows Gestalten s two bestsellers Faile: Prints + Originals 1999 2009 and Faile Temple.

Faile: Works on Wood presents a -compelling spectrum of projects and -craftsmanship that plays with the diversity of wood in terms of its uses and look and feel from early street art using salvaged material to more recent projects using apple boxes as well as their towering installation at the New York City Ballet.

The book introduces their Faile Puzzle Boxes, each of which contains 88 wooden blocks painted on six sides that can be moved and turned to create countless visual possibilities. It also includes their sculptural, carved Prayer Wheels, which are engineered to spin in place while people meditate to their favourite Faile images. Featuring beautiful colour reproductions and several new essays on their practice, Faile: Works on Wood takes readers on a journey of discovery through the artists work with this medium. In the process, the book shows that street art is not a momentary trend, but rather an independent art form.

Frequencies is the catalogue that accompanies a new exhibition project by the artist Eugènia Balcells on some perceptive aspects of energy: light and colour.

Frequencies is a book that wants to be faithful to the screens on which the images of the multimedia installations Colour wheel, Labyrinth, Marble and Frequencies are projected. It is a book that allows us to slowly study the flow of the colour spectrum that defines the geometry of everything that exists.

Frequencies is both a visual source of knowledge and a collection of reflections on the communicative capacity of art and sciences.

A comprehensive survey of contemporary art from Russia from the 1970s on, with more than 600 colour illustrations, artist interviews, in-depth profiles and essays by leading scholars and collectors

Russia has undergone an amazing cultural and political transformation over the past forty years. How has its rapidly changing social landscape shaped its art? And how does art effect social and cultural change within Russia? This generously illustrated volume explores these questions by presenting a broad but balanced selection of work by eighty Russian artists working from the 1970s to the present day.

Before Perestroika, artistic practice in Russia was either ‘official’ or ‘unofficial’; Frozen Dreams focuses on the ‘unofficial’ art of the Communist era, many of whose creators fled to the West. The book is an essential guide to this neglected area and an up-to-the-minute cultural portrait of an exciting artistic arena.

It features many newcomers, including Alexei Kallima, Kerim Ragimov and Olga Chernysheva alongside such well-established names as Ilya and Emilia Kabakov, Eric Bulatov, Boris Mikhailov and AES+F.

Hossein Amirsadeghi is a writer, publisher, editor and documentary film maker. Among his other books are Different Sames, New Vision and Unleashed, all published by Thames & Hudson.

Author Gianluca Pacchioni, Edited by Federica Sala, Introduction by Olivier Gabet, Text by Alberto Cavalli and Clio Lavau
ID: 15778
Издательство: Rizzoli

An intimate and complete journey into the world of Gianluca Pacchioni, sculptor, designer, and master in arts and crafts.

This book is an exploration of the artistic world of Gianluca Pacchioni, from the backstage of his workshop in Milan to his incredible studio-house, as well as finished projects and open-air installations. It also touches on his inspiration, which is drawn from a mix of Italian classicism and Japanese minimalism, with a dash of French seventeenth-century decorative style.

First based in Paris, where Pacchioni became a sculptor in the 1990s, and then in Milan, his hometown, his atelier constantly forges sculptures and limited-edition furniture produced for international clients. As a pioneer in the art and design world, his approach to art is experimental and innovative, and over the years he has shifted from iron to stainless steel, and his most recent works have been made with cast bronze and semiprecious stones and marble.

About the Author:

Federica Sala is an independent curator and design adviser. Olivier Gabet is an art historian and Director of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. Alberto Cavalli is General Director of the Cologni Foundation for the Métiers d’Art. Clio Lavau is curator at FILAF, the International Art Book and Film Festival of Perpignan.

Taschen 25th Anniversary Series

Post-depression America was in desperate need of a defining iconography that would lift it out of the black and white doldrums, and it came in the form of Gil Elvgren's Technicolor fantasies of the American dream. His technique - which earned him a reputation as "The Norman Rockwell of cheesecake" - involved photographing models and then painting them into gorgeous hyper-reality, with longer legs, more flamboyant hair and gravity-defying busts, and in the process making them the perfect moral-boosting eye-candy for every homesick private.

Since their immigration from Russia to the West in 1987, conceptual artists Ilya and Emilia Kabakov have produced magnificent installations in a wide variety of forums: a circus stage, public square, orchestral hall, opera houses, and museums.

Ilya and Emilia Kabakov's themes range from the playful to the utopian, but each reflects the artists' perspective on life in the Soviet Union. The nine projects presented in this exquisitely produced volume allow readers to observe ideas evolving from quickly sketched concepts to full-blown fantasies of enormous proportion.

Drawings, watercolors, plans, models and photographs of the productions themselves are interspersed with commentary about each installation. A lengthy interview with Ilya Kabakov, who was declared one of the "ten greatest living artists" by ARTnews magazine, completes this wonderful compilation of genius at work.

Its geographical location, its rampant urban development and its complex socio-political fabric make Istanbul an ideal backdrop for many artists, not only Turkish and Istanbul artists, but also artists from the diaspora or artists from abroad who have come to Istanbul as artists in residence. Through the selected works and the varied backgrounds of the artists, this publication attempts to show how city-dwellers face their reality and their history, and how, depending on their cultural, social and political background, they show their resistance to it and participation in it. In recent years, the number of artistic projects has increased, inviting dialogue and historical introspection. These artists accompany the movement of contemporary history. The publication will trace these developments.

Inside the Mind of Jamie Hewlett. 25 years of works, from Gorillaz to The Suggestionists

From Tank Girl to art-pop phenomenon Gorillaz, Jamie Hewlett is one of the most energetic pop culture figures of the past 20 years. Gathering more than 400 of his artworks, including strips, sketches, and works from his Saatchi Gallery show in 2015, Hewlett’s first-ever monograph celebrates a polymath artist who refuses to rest on his laurels, or to be pigeonholed in any particular practice.

From the legendary Tank Girl to live-action animations with Gorillaz, a Chinese contemporary opera to an exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery, artist Jamie Hewlett is one of the most energetic figures of contemporary pop culture.

With influences ranging from hip hop to zombie slasher movies, Hewlett emerged in the mid-1990s as co-creator of the zeitgeist-defining Tank Girl comic. With then-roommate Damon Albarn, he went on to create the unique cartoon band Gorillaz, a virtual pop group of animated characters, who have recorded five albums and mounted breathtaking live spectacles.

Since then, Hewlett has continued to collaborate with Albarn on projects including an elaborate staging of the Chinese novel Monkey: Journey to the West by Wu Cheng’en, complete with circus acrobats, Shaolin monks, and Chinese singers. In 2006, he was named “Designer of the Year” by the Design Museum in London, and in 2009, Hewlett and Albarn won a BAFTA for their animated Monkey sequence for the Beijing Olympic Games. More recently, The Suggestionists, an exhibition of prints at the Saatchi Gallery in London, demonstrated an exciting new direction in Hewlett’s practice.

This TASCHEN edition, Hewlett’s first major monograph, illustrates his thrilling creative journey with more than 400 artworks from the Tank Girl era through Gorillaz and up to the present day. Through stories, characters, strips, and sketches, we trace Hewlett’s exceptional capacity for invention and celebrate a polymath artist who refuses to rest on his laurels, or to be pigeonholed into a particular practice.

Sold out after just two weeks, this second edition features a brand new cover.

About the author:

British artist Jamie Hewlett is a compulsive producer of ever-fresh material infused with a punk touch. Moving between design, art and music, the creator of Tank Girl and characters in the virtual band Gorillaz was awarded Designer of the Year by the Design Museum in 2006, and staged his first solo exhibition at London’s Saatchi Gallery in 2015. The first Gorillaz album in seven years was released in 2017.

The editor:

Julius Wiedemann studied graphic design and marketing and was an art editor for newspapers and design magazines in Tokyo before joining TASCHEN in 2001. His titles include the Illustration Now! and Record Covers series, as well as the infographics collection and books about advertising and visual culture.

The provocative art of Jeff Koons (*1955) leaves no one cold. The “king of kitsch” is skilled at manipulating the media, exploding the boundaries of all genres with his appropriations from Pop Art and popular culture, and playing the keyboard of the art market like no other. Collectors scramble for his large collages and colossal stainless-steel balloon animals. Yet, in his eye-poppingly colorful, immaculately perfect works Koons also exposes the seductive potential of the glittering world of commodities; his ready-mades and gigantic toys are amusing and thought provoking at the same time. The American artist’s once controversial work has now been recognized for its prescience. This publication presents his oeuvre in two volumes: paintings from all of the artist’s creative phases form the core of the first volume. Koons’ sculptures are the focal point of the second volume, in which objects from the Liebieghaus collection, stemming from five thousand years of cultural history, are placed in a dialogue with his works.

Joe Sorren

Издательство: Gingko Press

Joe Sorren’s oil paintings redefine naturalist scenery such as caves, reefs, and seashores, inserting a surreal mood through soft, eerie imagery, thick Impressionist-inspired brushstrokes, and animalistic figures caught mid-motion.

Although the subjects are often childlike, the postures and weariness betray adult maturity, drawing a fine line between the vulnerable and precocious. Bulls and minotaurs parade guiltily with parasols and umbrellas through both Sorren’s original paintings and the sculptures created in collaboration with Jud Bergeron.

This monograph of work from 2004-2010 is published in conjunction with the exhibition Joe Sorren—Interruption, for the Grand Central Art Center at CSU Fullerton.

Joseph Ari Aloi

The first monograph to celebrate the diverse and eclectic work of one of the true visionaries of the contemporary art world. Joseph Ari Aloi-aka JK5-is a compulsive artist for whom every free moment is an opportunity to create. Bringing together his work as a fine artist with the instincts and references that color his passions of tattoo and graffiti art, JK5 has an expansive, textured, and highly individual visual vernacular. Whether as a painter, illustrator, calligrapher, or designer, JK5 is preoccupied with the collision of personal and revelatory themes with profound pop-cultural iconography, resulting in a powerful and readily identifiable style.

This creatively designed monograph features work that extends from paintings on canvas to plastic vinyl toys, from storyboards for animation films to collages and scratch cards, and from outlines for tattoo work to a vast collection of sketchbooks-each completed with such regularity that they serve as a kind of artist diary, recording his changing preoccupations and varying visual interests. Edited by the artist-with contributions from fellow artists Mike Giant and Kenzo Minami-and designed to reflect the varying and tactile nature of the work, this is an artist's book that will exist as a unique and collectible object in its own right as much as a record of the remarkable output of one of the most prolific voices in contemporary art.

About the Author:

JK5, aka Joseph Ari Aloi, is an artist, designer, writer, and tattoo artist. Aloi opened a tattoo studio, expanding his signature styles and approaches to lettering and graphics into work in many mediums. He has collaborated with such companies as Nike, Kidrobot, and Wieden + Kennedy, and his work has been exhibited through Deitch Projects, Alife NYC, and other galleries worldwide.
