Larry Silver
ID: 4724
Издательство: Abbeville Press

Four hundred little people frolic au naturel with overgrown songbirds and raspberries; a pudgy blue demon serenades a fashionable young couple with a tune piped through his own elongated nose; a knife-wielding set of disembodied ears stalks the damned through hell.

The phantasmagoric imagery of Hieronymus Bosch (d. 1516) has been the source of widespread interest ever since the painter’s lifetime, and is still so enigmatic that scholars have theorized that it contains hidden astrological, alchemical, or even heretical meanings. Yet none of these theories has ever seemed to provide an adequate understanding of Bosch’s work. Moreover, the considerable professional success that the artist enjoyed in his native Hertogenbosch, not to mention his membership in a traditional religious organization, suggests that he pursued not a sinister secret agenda but simply his personal artistic vision.

This intriguing new monograph by noted art historian Larry Silver interprets that artistic vision with admirable lucidity: it explains how Bosch’s understanding of human sin, morality, and punishment, which was conceived in an era of powerful apocalyptic expectation, shaped his dramatic visualizations of hell and of the temptations of even the most steadfast saints. Silver’s account of Bosch’s artistic development is one of the first to benefit from recent technical investigations of the paintings, as well as from the reexamination of the artist’s drawings in relation to his paintings.

Hieronymus Bosch is also unique in how securely it places its subject’s work in the broader history of painting in the Low Countries: Silver identifies sources of Bosch’s iconography in a wide range of fifteenth-century panel paintings, manuscript illuminations, and prints, and describes how, despite their own religiousness, Bosch’s pictures helped inspire the secular landscape and genre scenes of later Netherlandish painters. Augmented by 310 illustrations, most in color, including many dramatic close-ups of Bosch’s intricately imagined nightmare scenes, this is the definitive book on a perennially fascinating artist.

About the Author:

Larry Silver, a historian of Northern Renaissance art, received his Ph.D. from Harvard University and is currently Farquhar Professor of Art History at the University of Pennsylvania. His other books include the general survey Art in History and the recent Landscapes and Peasant Scenes: The Rise of Pictorial Genres in the Antwerp Art Market.

Presented in a style as stunning as the prints it celebrates, this survey of Hiroshige tells the fascinating story of the last great practitioner of ukiyo-e, or "pictures of the floating world." Hiroshige is considered to be the tradition's most poetic artist and his work had a marked influence on Western painting towards the end of the 19th century.

Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet, Paul Cezanne, and James Whistler were inspired by Hiroshige's serene depictions of the natural world. Arranged chronologically, this book illustrates through text and magnificent reproductions Hiroshige's youth and early career; his artistic development in the genre of landscape prints; his depictions of Edo and the provinces; the flower and bird prints; and his many popular books and paintings. It discusses the historic and cultural environment in which Hiroshige flourished and the many reasons his art continues to be revered and imitated.

Filled with 300 color reproductions, and featuring a clamshell box and Japanese-style binding, this volume is destined to become the definitive examination of Hiroshige's oeuvre.

Flavia Frigeri, Lesley Ma, Raffaele Bedarida
ID: 16538
Издательство: Rizzoli

This first English book about Ho Kan, a pioneering Chinese artist who lived in Milan from 1964 to 2014, features exceptional artworks and groundbreaking research.

Ho Kan’s pioneering work is a meeting of many worlds, bringing together ideas and inspiration that are as rooted in notions of East and West as they are in the past and present. Delicately balanced on the cusp of Western geometry, and on the lines, shapes, and forms of Chinese characters, this book traces the artist’s creative trajectory from his co-founding of the radical Ton Fan Group in Taipei to the dynamic cultural milieu of 1960s Milan, the city he lived in until 2014.

Featuring some 200 exceptional illustrations of the artist’s life and work, comprehensive critical research, and personal interviews with Ho Kan, the essays in this book explore the artist’s interactions and experiences in Taipei and Milan alongside those of other Italian and international artists from that period, mapping his artistic journey from surrealism toward abstraction, laying out his extraordinary legacy as a leading transcultural artist.

Author Catherine Lampert and Roger Robinson and Courtney J. Martin
ID: 15709
Издательство: Rizzoli

This is the first comprehensive overview of the career to date of British-born Jamaican artist Hurvin Anderson (b. 1965). Anderson is known for painting lush and loosely rendered observations of scenes and spaces loaded with personal meaning.

Turner Prize-nominated artist Hurvin Anderson is best known for his brightly painted, densely detailed landscapes and interior scenes — particularly those relating to his upbringing in the Afro-Caribbean community in the Midlands of England, as well as more recent trips to the Caribbean. Anderson’s luscious paintings have hybridity at their heart. A tug-of-war plays out between abstraction and figuration, nature versus the manmade, beauty and menace, and his British and Jamaican heritage.

Born in the United Kingdom as a member of the Jamaican diaspora, Anderson relates to the Caribbean as both insider and outsider, aware of the mythmaking that the idea of lost or future paradise generates. This book, Anderson’s first major monograph, has been carefully curated by the artist himself and includes paintings, sketches, source material and ephemera, and studio shots. The volume also features a foreword by Courtney J. Martin, an in-depth and deeply considered essay by art historian Catherine Lampert, poems by Roger Robinson, and an illustrated chronology.

About the Author:

Courtney J. Martin is Director of the Yale Center for British Art. Catherine Lampert is an independent curator and art historian. She has curated numerous exhibitions at the Hayward Gallery, the Royal Academy of the Arts, and the Whitechapel Gallery, where she was director from 1988 to 2001. Roger Robinson is a British writer, musician, and performer who lives between England and Trinidad. His book A Portable Paradise (Peepal Tree Press) won the prestigious 2019 T. S. Eliot Prize, announced in London in January 2020. He is the second writer of Caribbean heritage to win the prize, the highest-value award in UK poetry, after Derek Walcott won in 2010.

A lavishly illustrated look at the sources behind the paintings of Francis Bacon

Francis Bacon famously found inspiration in photographs, film-stills and mass-media imagery. In this new, updated edition of In Camera, Martin Harrison reveals how these sources informed some of Bacon’s most important paintings and triggered decisive turning points in the artist’s stylistic development.

Key influences, including the masters Velázquez, Poussin and Rodin, the photographer Eadweard Muybridge and the film director Sergei Eisenstein, are given close consideration. Bacon’s work is examined in relation to the precedents set by other artists working in the tradition of making use of mechanical reproductions, including Pablo Picasso and Walter Sickert, and in the context of his contemporaries Lucian Freud, Mark Rothko, Graham Sutherland and Patrick Heron.

With the aid of over 270 illustrations, including valuable source images and documents, In Camera is a bravura accomplishment of original research, addressing important questions about Bacon’s painting practice and shedding fresh light on his life and work.

Contents List:

Introduction • After Picasso • Michelangelo and Muybridge • Raw Material • In Camera • Skin/Flicks

About the Author:

Martin Harrison is one of the foremost scholars of Francis Bacon, and the editor of Francis Bacon: Catalogue Raisonné.

Text by Lola Kramer and Elise Roche, Foreword by Line Papin
ID: 16541
Издательство: Rizzoli

This is the first international monograph on the French artist Inès Longevial.

Inès Longevial is a French painter based in Paris. She started drawing and painting at a very young age, first showing her work on Instagram, where she had an immediate success in terms of visibility. Since then her career has been growing fast, thanks to the support of the Parisian gallery Ketabi-Bourdet and to solo shows in Paris and New York.

Her oil paintings and drawings focus on two main themes: femininity and nature. Bodies, faces, and skin are shaped by light and color, and different palettes reflect different emotions—sometimes soft and sensual, sometimes intense, strong, and violent. The artist approaches her memories in color and gives form to candid and absorbed faces that embody the nostalgia of seasons, sunsets, shades of light, and caresses.

Originally from the southwest of France but with family in the Basque Country, she’s been close to Spanish culture; Pedro Almodóvar’s colorful world and Pablo Picasso’s lines rank among her main influences. Through large oil portraits on linen canvas and on paper, the artist follows an intimate injunction: “to make the face speak.” Her face—her faces—have always taken on the appearance of a landscape, sculpted by infinite shades of gleam, carved by valleys, traversed by shadows.

The book presents a significant selection of paintings and drawings, and includes pages of her sketchbook, a kind of intimate diary showing her inspiration and her spontaneous approach to painting. It is the first monographic publication on a promising young talent, with great potential.

About the Author:

Lola Kramer is a curator, writer, and producer based in New York City. She is known for her essays, profiles, and interviews with pioneers of creative disciplines. She is the curator of 7 Gardens, a public art exhibition throughout the community gardens in the Lower East Side. Elise Roche is a French curator and contemporary art consultant. Since 2019, she has been the director of projects at Hervé Mikaeloff Agency where she specializes in projects dedicated to emerging creation. She also writes for magazines and galleries.
Line Papin is a French novelist, born in Vietnam and living in Paris. She published her first novel at the age of 21 and has published two successful novels since then.

Jamali
ID: 16293
Издательство: Rizzoli

An epic coming-to-America success story, this is the autobiography of Pakistani-born American artist Jamali who originated Mystical Expressionism and whose mission is to bring peace to the world through art.

In this heavily illustrated memoir the reader is treated to an epic saga covering seven decades and three continents about an artist's dream for a more peaceful world. The eldest son of a prominent family living in the foothills of the Himalayas, Jamali experienced the horrors of war through the Indian Partition, which led him to pursue a life of peace through art on a prolific scale producing more than 40,000 original works to date. The complex surfaces and mystical imagery found in Jamali's paintings have been compared to the neo-expressionists Anselm Kiefer and Georg Baselitz. His gestural techniques link him to Jackson Pollock and the New York School. But the pre-eminent art critic Donald Kuspit observed that Jamali's singular method required its own name -- Mystical Expressionism.

One hundred artworks individually selected by the artist accompany the engaging text in a separate section beautifully printed on a specially coated paper. Inspired by people such as Gandhi who advocated change through non-violent measures, Jamali hopes to change our lives by sharing his story of art and peace.

About the Author:

Jamali is one of the most successful artists in America and one of the most collected living artists globally. He has galleries in New York, Florida, and Denmark.

Richard Wills
ID: 18199
Издательство: Pallas Athene

James Seymour (c. 1700-1752) is one of the founders of English sporting art. A lover of the Turf, Seymour specialised in depictions of horses and their riders, particularly at Newmarket between 1722 and 1752. His wonderful paintings and drawings are some of the most important records we have of the early greats, such as Flying Childers, and of the way racing was organised at this early stage.

Richard Wills has studied Seymour for over ten years, and this book is the first ever comprehensive account and catalogue. 130 paintings and 430 drawings, including new discoveries, are included in the book, with over 500 illustrations, many never reproduced before. The introductory essay examines the life of Seymour, whose devotion to the Turf enabled him to gain an unrivalled knowledge of equine anatomy and behaviour. Considerable information about the history of racing, and its enrichment through analysis of Seymour’s paintings, is contributed by David Oldrey and Tim Cox.

About the Author:

Richard Wills is a working conservationist who farms in Hampshire with his wife, Netta. He worked for Christie’s Auctioneers in various capacities for 20 years and has been involved with the art world as both collector and agent. He is a published cartoonist and has worked for various conservation charities in the UK.

Amanda C. Burdan, Jennifer Margaret Barker, Rena Butler, Michael Kiley, John Rusk
ID: 17276
Издательство: Rizzoli

A major monograph of the American realist artist, descendant of one of America’s most revered artistic families, and painter of dark and uneasy subjects.

This book traces a persistent vein of intriguing, often disconcerting, imagery over the career of renowned artist Jamie Wyeth (b. 1946), famous for his hyperrealist paintings of farm animals and Maine lighthouses. The focus in this volume is on the chilling thread that runs through his work, present but not overwhelming, and ever-evolving with his style and subjects. Whether he is introducing curious characters or surveying strange landscapes, Wyeth is at home with uneasy subjects and a master of the unsettled mood.

Like his father, Andrew Wyeth, and grandfather N. C. Wyeth before him, Jamie Wyeth splits his time between the Brandywine River Valley of Pennsylvania and Delaware and the mid-coast of Maine. In these two locales Wyeth has passed through many “obsessions,” as he calls his favored subjects: farm tools brimming with the potential for violence, eccentric portraits and unnerving figure studies, haunted places, and possessed plants and animals. In addition to the main essay, contributors explore the creation of similarly unsettling moods in film, dance, sound artistry, and classical music.

About the Authors:

Jennifer Margaret Barker is professor of music theory/composition at the University of Delaware.

Amanda C. Burdan is senior curator at the Brandywine Museum of Art.

Rena Butler is a dancer and the recipient of the 2019 Princess Grace Foundation Award for Choreography.

Michael Kiley is a sound designer, composer, performer, and educator.

John Rusk is a film and television director and producer.

Defying constructed binaries between high and low art

Art and Objecthood illuminates the role of found objects and unconventional materials in the oeuvre of world-renowned artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. His creative fervor saw no bounds, he painted and drew on everything around him—from chairs to refrigerators, but also on items he encountered on the street: discarded windows and doors, mirrors, wood boards, and subway tiles. Interweaving art and life, these three-dimensional works are not only integral to New York’s cultural landscape in the 1980s but are also symbols of Basquiat’s engagement with, and transformation of, the reality around him. This publication presents new scholarship by leading Basquiat scholars and art historians and is the first comprehensive survey to explore Basquiat’s use of found objects and unorthodox supports and their role in addressing issues of social inequality, political thresholds, and racial boundaries in the United States.

Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960–1988, New York City) is known for his raw gestural style of painting. His distinct approach was characterized by a rich fusion of text, symbols, and imagery. He was one of the first African American artists to achieve major international acclaim, and is celebrated for his prolific, albeit short artistic career.

Издательство: Prestel

This exciting, color-filled retrospective monograph offers new insights into Basquiat's unique visual language and helps illuminate messages about political and social issues that feel as urgent today as they did a half-century ago.

Jean-Michel Basquiat’s symbolic, complex, and often emotionally charged work made a huge impact on the 1980s downtown New York City art scene. And though his all-too-brief career ended when he died at age 27, Basquiat left behind an enormous legacy — not only in the number of works he produced, but also in the messages he encoded around political, social, racial, and cultural issues. This exciting book shows how Basquiat used an intricate network of signs and symbols to challenge the very system that made him a darling of the art world. It traces his inspiration from cartoons, children’s drawings, and advertising as well as his own Haitian and Puerto Rican heritage; discusses the influence of African-American, African, and Aztec cultural histories; and shows how Basquiat incorporated into his work classical themes and contemporary icons — from athletes to musicians. What becomes clear is how, even as a young man, Basquiat had a profound understanding of the artist’s role in art history, and of his position as a young Black artist in a world of racism, suppression and social injustice.

This book helps readers decode Basquiat’s unique lingua franca, an intoxicating body of work brimming with social commentary that was in turns incisive, angry, comic, hip, and heartbreaking, and that remains powerful and meaningful today.

Dieter Buchhart is an international guest curator and Basquiat specialist.

The artist’s most inspired works in one volume.

Jean-Michel Basquiat — artist and art world provocateur — took New York City by storm with his powerful and complex works that relentlessly engaged with charged sociopolitical issues, including race, police brutality, and structural inequity. In this important volume, devoted to an exhibition at the Brant Foundation in their newly opened Manhattan outpost featuring the artist’s key works, Basquiat’s art returns to its East Village roots, contextualized for the first time in decades in the very neighborhood that served as one of his greatest inspirations.

Dieter Buchhart, noted Basquiat scholar and curator, brings together one hundred of the artist’s most important works, focusing on the best examples of the many subjects that informed Basquiat’s work, from jazz, anatomy, sports figures, comics, classical literature, the African diaspora, and art history. The exhibition partially restages three of the artist’s critical early shows, including an exhibition of the artist’s paintings and drawings of heads at Robert Miller Gallery; his most important canvases from Gagosian Gallery’s 1982 show in Los Angeles; and Basquiat’s solo show at Fun Gallery in the East Village. Buchhart also considers in-depth the artist’s so-called stretcher bar paintings, in which the normally hidden wooden supports for stretched canvases are exposed, works that have yet to be explored at length by scholars. In so doing, Buchhart offers a critical assessment of the enduring importance and legacy of the artist’s work.
