James Seymour (c. 1700-1752) is one of the founders of English sporting art. A lover of the Turf, Seymour specialised in depictions of horses and their riders, particularly at Newmarket between 1722 and 1752. His wonderful paintings and drawings are some of the most important records we have of the early greats, such as Flying Childers, and of the way racing was organised at this early stage.

Richard Wills has studied Seymour for over ten years, and this book is the first ever comprehensive account and catalogue. 130 paintings and 430 drawings, including new discoveries, are included in the book, with over 500 illustrations, many never reproduced before. The introductory essay examines the life of Seymour, whose devotion to the Turf enabled him to gain an unrivalled knowledge of equine anatomy and behaviour. Considerable information about the history of racing, and its enrichment through analysis of Seymour’s paintings, is contributed by David Oldrey and Tim Cox.

He worked for Christie’s Auctioneers in various capacities for 20 years and has been involved with the art world as both collector and agent. This book traces a persistent vein of intriguing, often disconcerting, imagery over the career of renowned artist Jamie Wyeth (b. 1946), famous for his hyperrealist paintings of farm animals and Maine lighthouses. Defying constructed binaries between high and low art

Art and Objecthood illuminates the role of found objects and unconventional materials in the oeuvre of world-renowned artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. His creative fervor saw no bounds, he painted and drew on everything around him—from chairs to refrigerators, but also on items he encountered on the street: discarded windows and doors, mirrors, wood boards, and subway tiles. Interweaving art and life, these three-dimensional works are not only integral to New York’s cultural landscape in the 1980s but are also symbols of Basquiat’s engagement with, and transformation of, the reality around him. This publication presents new scholarship by leading Basquiat scholars and art historians and is the first comprehensive survey to explore Basquiat’s use of found objects and unorthodox supports and their role in addressing issues of social inequality, political thresholds, and racial boundaries in the United States.

Jean-Michel Basquiat — artist and art world provocateur — took New York City by storm with his powerful and complex works that relentlessly engaged with charged sociopolitical issues, including race, police brutality, and structural inequity. The exhibition partially restages three of the artist’s critical early shows, including an exhibition of the artist’s paintings and drawings of heads at Robert Miller Gallery; his most important canvases from Gagosian Gallery’s 1982 show in Los Angeles; and Basquiat’s solo show at Fun Gallery in the East Village. Buchhart also considers in-depth the artist’s so-called stretcher bar paintings, in which the normally hidden wooden supports for stretched canvases are exposed, works that have yet to be explored at length by scholars. Dieter Buchhart is a curator and art theorist based in Vienna. He has PhD degrees in art history and restoration science. He has curated many exhibitions in renowned international museums and art spaces, and has published nearly ten books on the work of Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Previously, he was director of the Henry Moore Foundation and director of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh. Sally Mann's photographs have been the subject of major exhibitions at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia, and the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. Her work can be found in many collections, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Mark Stevens is the former art critic of New York magazine. Oxyrhynchus is a city in upper Egypt that was established in 332 BC and is considered one of the most important archaeological sites ever discovered. Saville references the layer upon layer of discoveries at Oxyrhynchus in her new body of work, the final effect being a mysterious narrative of layered bodies and images. Born in Guizhou, Xie Jinglan (nicknamed “Lalan”) was a multidisciplinary artist trained across various art forms, including painting, music, and dance. Excelling in all such categories, Lalan united these fields in her artistic practice to create an oeuvre that epitomized “synthesized art.” Her lifelong explorations resulted in an unusual kind of exhibition/performance named Spectacle, which assimilates dance and music within her artworks. Her works can be found in important Western and Asian museums, such as the Centre Pompidou Musée National d’Art Moderne, and Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, Shanghai Art Museum, and others.

This book reviews her entire career by selecting her most representative masterpieces and celebrating her life journey as the backdrop, between dream and drama. The materials in this book have been collected by a dedicated research team through a painstaking process lasting more than two years.

Lalan’s paintings are a melting pot of many important features inspired by traditional Chinese culture on the one hand (including the spirit of Taoism, the practice of qigong, and the essence of ink landscapes during the Song Dynasty), and Western abstract painting on the other.
