Видавництво: Taschen

They have little to do with the standard procreative urge, Mr. Crumb admits. He has also said he finds nothing more boring than someone else’s sexual obsessions, and yet through his long career, the world’s most famous underground cartoonist has felt compelled to include his own sex fantasies in his art. He explains it as a compulsive catharsis, while fans call R. Crumb’s erotic fantasies the Master at his best.

Now Crumb has selected his most intimately revealing comic strips and single-page drawings to create a 258-page encyclopedic trip through his sexual psyche. All images were created between 1980 and 2006, and all strips are hand-coloured for a lush vibrancy never seen in his comic books. In total the book features 14 complete stories, including My Troubles With Women, If I Were a King, A Bitchin’ Bod, and How To Have Fun With a Strong Girl, as well as 60 single-page drawings.

The artist admits it’s a little scary to see his most fevered obsessions collected end to end like this, but fans will find Robert Crumb’s Sex Obsessions a fascinating peek inside an often tortured, always brilliantly talented mind, as well as an unparalleled collector’s item.

The refined and revered tradition of botanical illustration, produced under aristocratic patronage, stretches back to the Renaissance. It emerged out of the desire to catalogue nature in all its wild splendour, and it was a process that demanded the most precise and skilful of artists.

French flower painter Pierre-Joseph Redouté is often viewed as one of the last and the best of these painters and engravers. Commissioned by among others, Napoleon's Josephine, Redouté studied with the finest flower painters in France and Amsterdam, and developed a breathtaking skill at translating his observations of nature onto paper. His illustrations of the botanical alphabets of D.-M. Guillamain were a landmark in flower painting for their accuracy and beauty. He was also an innovator in the techniques of printing, introducing "stipple-engraving" to France, always striving for greater exactitude in his art.

This is a glorious and completely faithful reproduction of his most celebrated work Les Roses, which was published in three volumes between 1817 and 1824. In Les Roses he turns his attention to that most romantic and evocative of subjects, and this handsome volume preserves every detail of Redouté's masterful representation of nature's gifts.

This gorgeous keepsake showcases the skillful artwork of two men who dedicated their lives to botanical illustration, the Belgian Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759-1840) and his English contemporary, James Sowerby (1757-1822).

The beautiful rose plates featured within are original reproductions of drawings which came to life in England’s Kew Gardens, the Gardens of Versailles, and at the Château de Malmaison, the residence of Napoleon’s first wife. Each plate is artfully reproduced from the extraordinarily images found in Redouté’s Les Roses (1817-21) and Sowerby’s English Botany (1780-1814). A comprehensive index at the back of the book uses the artists’ original language to describe the intricacies of the rose colors, their velvety textures, and their intoxicating scents.

To bring this lovely book into the 21st century, the paperback format and low price make this rare and significant volume accessible and affordable. A DVD is also included with images of the roses to be used by readers at their discretion.

One of the first depictions of marine fauna comes from Samuel Fallours, who was in the service of the Dutch East India Company. On the island of Ambon, one of the Moluccas, he made drawings of fish and other marine organisms of the Indian Ocean and brought them back to Holland in 1712. His drawings belong to a number of sets of similar drawings, depicting hundreds of animals, mostly fish but also crustaceans, insects, a dugong, and even a mermaid. Some of these became the basis for 18th-century publications, among them Louis Renard's Poissons, Ecrevisses et Crabes (1719) and François Valentijn's Verhandeling der Ongemeene Visschen van Amboina, a chapter in his Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indien (1724−1726).

These beautiful, elaborately detailed and brilliantly colored drawings provide an extraordinary description of marine fish fauna of the East Indies that can still be interpreted in light of present-day scientific knowledge. From an artistic and historical viewpoint, these drawings are among the finest natural history illustrations ever made.

Samuel Fallours apparently born in Rotterdam, began his career as a common soldier in the service of the Dutch East India Company. On 27 April 1703, he sailed from Goeree, the Netherlands, to Batavia where he stayed until at least the close of 1705. By June 1706, he was serving as a soldier in Ambon, assigned to the main guard-house of Castle Victoria. From September 1706 to June 1712, he held the title of Associate Curate (krankbezoeker), a kind of assistant to the clergy, entrusted with consoling the sick of Ambon. He left the Indies for the Netherlands in November 1712. During his sojourn in Ambon, (1706−1712) Fallours executed the illustrations.

DK's Science of series dives into the science of various types of exercises such as weight training, running, and yoga. Each book discusses the benefits of the specific type of workout and how you can transform your outlook about health and fitness.

How The Book Works

The first section - human physiology - introduces you to the wonder that is skeletal muscle and the mechanisms that underpin strength training's demands on the body. It will help you understand how muscles work and grow, and how the resistance work stimulates muscles to develop strength and size, alongside its positive impacts on bones and connective tissue. It also explains how the body powers muscular work and shows you how to calculate your own daily macronutrient requirements. Lastly, you're given an overview of the benefits to the brain, and the crucial role it plays in attitude and mental health.

The second section - strength exercises - is devoted to a comprehensive collection of strength training exercises to perform, along with many variations offered to compliment your available training equipment, personal preferences, and level of challenge - at home or in the gym. Each exercise displays the muscles being used throughout the movement with detailed instruction on how to achieve proper form and technique; common mistakes are covered, too.

The third section - preventing injury - explores common injuries related to resistance training, with explanations on how to avoid them and how to return to training if you do suffer an injury. A consistent and structured routine, including a proper warm-up, prepares the body for work, and the various mobility exercises and stretches given will help you tune in to how your body is responding to the training.

The final section - how to train - outlines everything you need to know about the variables of effective strength training, such as training volume and fatigue management. Whether you want to build muscle, strength, or endurance, you'll find an easy-to-follow program to suit, as well as alternatives for those wanting to workout more often. Then programs form the base of your training and can be adjusted in the months and years to come.

_________

Slavutych, a Ukrainian provincial city north of Kyiv, seems in many respects to belong to a different era. Built after the Chornobyl nuclear disaster in 1986 to replace the contaminated dwellings of workers from the power plant, Slavutych is the last 'ideal' planned city of the Soviet Union.

However, the city is also highly topical - particularly in times of political crisis in Eastern Europe. Slavutych is an architectural manifestation of the Soviet people's friendship, with architects throughout the Soviet Union involved in its planning and construction. As a result, Slavutych's postmodernist architecture is both characterised by socialist, Soviet paradigms and regional influences from the Caucasus region, Baltic States and Russia. Furthermore, the search of the last Soviet generation of architects for an environmentally sustainable, habitable architecture is of course still relevant today.

The Architectural Guide Slavutych documents numerous buildings and all city districts, providing a critical analysis of unique late Soviet architecture and urban planning in the context of Perestroika.

For many thousands of years, people have used oratory to influence others, but what exactly makes a speech great? Is it the choice of words, the feelings they express, the passion with which the speaker delivers them, the circumstances or the lasting effect that the speech has on what other people think or do, or even on the course of history? Open up this book to find out...

The speeches in Speeches that Changed the World are divided into the following chapters: Ancient history, Love, Religion, Science, Patriotism, Philosophy, Humanity and liberty, Sport, Politics and War. Many of them have inspired people to act, some have changed the way people think or look at the world. Others have changed the course of events across the globe - sometimes for the better, at other times with devastating results. All have chronicled our history.
