Glass is a fascinating building material with diverse, sometimes contrasting qualities: transparent, reflective or frosted, tough yet fragile. In recent decades tremendous advances have been made in glass technology. Bold architectural designs are now using glass to perform loadbearing functions and, thanks to the advent of sophisticated, largely invisible coatings, for climate control. Much innovative potential still remains to be tapped: engineers and architects, scientists at universities and in industry, and creative companies are coming up with astonishing new developments. Perhaps more so than with any other building material, advances in architectural applications for glass are emerging as a result of close cooperation between designers, experts from a range of scientific disciplines and the constructors.

Bars and restaurants need to be assertive. Customers tend not to visit them to satisfy basic appetites for food or drink but for social opportunities. Their interiors need to occupy the imagination of their customers and to whet the appetite for a return visit. The design that gets the formula right will do as much to prolong the life of the business as the products on offer.

As this book demonstrates, the conventions and mechanics of eating and drinking influence how bars and restaurants are conceived in different regions of the world. Whatever the final result users are in sustained, intimate contact with the elements of the space they inhabit and detailing must be refined enough, and visually rich enough, to withstand prolonged scrutiny.

This book includes a wide range of international projects and for each one there is a descriptive text, colour photographs, floor plans, sections and construction and decorative details. A bonus CD-ROM contains all the drawings as printed in the book, in both EPS and DWG (generic CAD) formats.

For each bathroom there is an image of the whole house (placing it in context and providing a flavour of the general design style), images of the bathroom, and a floor plan showing its relation to other spaces. The pages that follow are entirely devoted to detailed drawings showing the arrangement and construction of the bathroom, in particular sections, elevations and construction details of all the fitted units and joinery. These drawings are all made to a consistent style and to a set number of scales for easy comparison. Dimensions are also included with the drawings as well as details of fitted units (baths, showers, basins, etc.). The credits for the project include contact details of suppliers so that the exact materials and fixtures can be sourced. The projects are arranged into chapters by type of dominant material: glass, steel and stone. The book will be invaluable for all practising architects as well as those considering commissioning a high-quality bathroom for their own house

Virginia McLeod studied architecture in Australia before practising for a number of years in Sydney. She moved to the UK in 1998 to complete an MA in the history and theory of Architecture at the Architectural Association in London. She is the author of 'Detail in Contemporary Kitchen Design', 'Detail in Contemporary Landscape Architecture', 'Detail in Contemporary Timber Architecture' and 'Detail in Contemporary Residential Architecture', and also 'Encyclopedia of Detail in Contemporary Residential Architecture'  -  all published by Laurence King.

Detail in Contemporary Kitchen Design features more than 30 kitchen designs from around the world, each created by a notable architect for a specific residence. Arranged into chapters according to the dominant material used – stone, timber and steel – each design is accompanied by an image of the whole house, clear photographs of the kitchen itself and a floor plan showing its relation to the other spaces within the house. Detailed photographs and architectural drawings show the arrangement and construction of the kitchens, and sections and elevations reveal the construction details of fitted units and joinery. These drawings have been specially created to a consistent style and to a set number of scales for easy comparison. Dimensions are included, as well as model details of all the units and appliances, with suppliers’ information so that these can be easily sourced. A selection of insightful case studies include interviews with clients, designers and manufacturers and provide an overview of the whole process of commissioning and creating a contemporary bespoke kitchen. An invaluable reference for practising architects, interior designers and students, this book is also an informative and inspirational guide for anyone who is considering commissioning a high-quality kitchen for their own home.

Lighting is a key feature of almost all interiors but it is often treated in a rather superficial manner in most books. This volume features more than 40 recent international projects where the lighting is the defining design feature.

For large schemes, a professional lighting designer is usually employed, but for smaller projects it will often fall to the architect or interior designer to specify the lighting. In either case, it is crucial that the architect or interior designer understands what lighting is available, how it can be used and controlled and how it can be fitted.

Each project includes detailed plans, diagrams, sketches and CAD visuals to demonstrate the lighting techniques involved. These are accompanied by an explanatory text that looks at the original brief, the design concept and the detailed specification of the light fittings. A bonus CD includes technical drawings from the book. This book will be an invaluable resource for professional interior designers and architects in what is a fast-changing field.

About the Author:

Jill Entwistle was editor of Light magazine for several years and is the author of a number of books on lighting, including Designing with Light: Bars and Clubs and Designing with Light: Hotels.

Office design has changed significantly over the last few years and is now one of the most innovative areas of interior design.

It used to be the case that only the public spaces of an office were creatively designed, but increasingly the staff areas are seen as key reflections of the company brand as well. In more radical offices, there is also a growing belief in the importance of work areas as social spaces and a blurring of the distinction between work and recreation.

This book explores in detail 42 of the best recent office design schemes, featuring projects from leading architects around the world. Each project includes photographs as well as detailed drawings and plans, where appropriate, in addition to informative text describing the design concept and process. A bonus CD contains drawings featured in the book, in both eps and dwg (generic CAD) formats.
