Architectural detailing makes a building unique, and an architect outstanding. Detail in Contemporary Residential Architecture provides analysis of both the technical and the aesthetic importance of details in the development of contemporary residential architecture from 2000 to 2005. Featuring many of the world/'/s most highly acclaimed architects, the book presents over 50 of the most recently completed and influential house designs.

For each house there are colour photographs, plans of every floor, sections and elevations as well as numerous construction details. All the drawings are styled in the same consistent way to allow for easy comparison. There is also a brief descriptive text and detailed captions. The book also features in-depth information for each project, including the location, the floor area, the client, the architectural project team, main consultants and contractors.

Virginia McLeod studied architecture in Australia before practising for a number of years in Sydney. She moved to the UK in 1998 to complete an MA in the history and theory of Architecture at the Architectural Association in London. Since then she has worked for a number of private practices in London and was also the editor of The Phaidon Atlas of Contemporary World Architecture. She is the author of 'Detail in Contemporary Kitchen Design', 'Detail in Contemporary Landscape Architecture', 'Detail in Contemporary Glass Architecture',  'Detail in Contemporary Timber Architecture' and 'Detail in Contemporary Bathroom Design' and also 'Encyclopedia of Detail in Contemporary Residential Architecture'   -  all published by Laurence King.

Good retail design must attract and keep customers, support a brand or store’s image, showcase the product, and work as a functional shopping environment. This book features 44 of the best recent examples of retail design from around the world and examines the details within the larger decorative schemes.

Most retail interiors have a comparatively short life, and economic realities influence choice of materials and methods of construction; while these will mainly be necessarily modest, style or a sense of luxury are effectively achieved by the creative consideration of detail.

Projects range from specialist boutiques to branded high street chain stores, from fashion retailers to eateries, and include descriptive text, colour photographs, floor plans, sections and construction and decorative details. A bonus CD-ROM contains all the drawings as printed in the book, in both EPS and DWG (generic CAD) formats.

About the Authors:

Drew Plunkett was Head of the Department of Interior Design at the Glasgow School of Art. Since 1981 he has practised as an interior designer based in London and Glasgow. He is also active as an exhibitor, curator and critical writer. He is the author of Drawing for Interior Design (2009).
Olga Reid is a practising interior designer at Urban Salon, London.

« Building for everyone » that is the best definition of what lies behind the unwieldy concept of « barrier - free design » : the complete and total usability of buildings, including for those with disabilities, for the integration of all of societys members can only succeed when their environment is made accessible to them. Demographic changes demand new qualities of private and public space, qualities that are also required by new legislation.
