The external facades of a building are more than a protective mantle, or an intelligent skin regulating temperature and light, they also determine its very appearance. By unusual choices of materials and the use of complex technology, facades have become increasingly significant in recent years. External surfaces are being perceived as an integral part of the building and are therefore being designed as such.

This volume focuses on the wide-ranging aspects of facade design, from the selection and use of materials to the advanced technical possibilities now open to the architect. A wide array of carefully selected international examples show the theory in the practice. All plans, details, and large scale sections of the facades have been researched with the high degree of competence typical of the editorial staff from the review Detail.

Expert authors provide the essential information needed to plan and design facades and elucidate on the latest developments in technology and materials.

From trade fair stands to museum concepts, the successful transfer of information to a wide public audience relies on effective staging and appropriate architectural design. While museum exhibitions focus on the art of communicating content, with commercial aspects tending to play a more subordinate role, the goal of trade fair stands and showrooms is to convey a brand image. And at least since large companies like BMW and Mercedes began introducing commercialized museum concepts designed to stage their brands, the phenomenon has come full circle.

Not infrequently, planners today must not only accomplish the demanding task of designing an exhibition; they must also meet full service demands, from briefings and CI design to realization. How to do this successfully is the subject of short articles by authors from the relevant fields. With extensively documented project examples organized by presentation or exhibition type, these valuable technical articles offer a detailed roadmap to practical success.

Communal living, intergenerational living, living for families, handicap-accessible living, living and working, living and leisure time – the wide variety of current demands is shaping future concepts in housing, which will have to do justice to the needs of our increasingly multilayered society. The examples in this new volume in the In Detail series are correspondingly diverse. From the demand for stroller- and wheelchairaccessible housing through facilities that accommodate the needs of senior citizens all the way to the modernization of existing buildings, the selection of projects offers a panoramic overview.

Organized thematically, In Detail: Integrated Housing highlights a variety of well-defined topics, such as handicap-accessibility and flexibility of use, and presents them together with explanatory technical articles and examples of realized projects. In closing, it provides addresses of information centers and associations as well as sources of additional information.

Architecture is defined by its materials and surfaces. Not infrequently, it is their look and feel that determine whether a project succeeds or fails. For this reason, it is crucially important that planners choose the right materials and use them correctly, a task that is especially challenging today, when they are confronted with an almost dizzying variety of design possibilities and almost unlimited industrial production techniques.

In Detail: Materials for Interiors provides detailed and specific information on the use of appropriate materials in interior design. The book leads off with an overview of the range of available products for interior design, including large-format photographs of each material and interiors that use them. This is followed by detailed discussions of relevant aspects and production methods of the individual material groups, including selected examples. The processing of the materials is illustrated by production photographs from the construction site and numerous detail drawings. In the accompanying texts, expert planners who specialize in the various materials share their practical knowledge of how to use them. The technical articles and example projects focus on the surface of the material and how it is produced or comes to be and contain corresponding decision support for planners. Additional technical information on the materials used and a list of manufacturer and vendor addresses round out the volume.

Shelters, kiosks, snack bars, market stalls, bus stops, telephone booths, toilets, advertising columns, ticket booths, mobile tents or housing units, emergency shelters, tourist information boothsthis list of small, autonomously functioning buildings could be expanded almost infinitely. Small buildings shape our daily lives; they are found at the nearest street corner; they are present and indispensable, but as architecture they attract our attention only rarely. Yet these small structures occupy a definite place in the infrastructure of the city. Rather than focusing on the large attractions of architecture, architects find many potential ways to ensure the quality of everyday design hidden in these small, sometimes charming necessities. This volume in the DETAIL series spans the arc between architecture and product design, since not infrequently small buildings are located precisely in the area of tension between these two professions, and their successful realization is evident in the details of their construction.

Text by Mitchell Owens, Photographed by Derry Moore

Издательство: Rizzoli

In House celebrates some of the world’s most striking and eccentric rooms, beautifully captured by Derry Moore, the 12th Earl of Drogheda and a regular contributor to Architectural Digest and Nest magazines, who for nearly thirty-five years has inimitably photographed unique, style-setting houses. Richly diverse in style and period, what these extraordinary interiors share is an eccentricity and a commitment to decorative aesthetics that has singled them out in the eyes of the world’s most discerning arbiters of taste.

From an airy and colorful Moroccan palace to an austere but whimsical Scottish castle; from an Art Deco masterpiece in Jodhpur to Alphonse Mucha’s cluttered apartment in Prague; and from the museumlike home of one of London’s most macabre collectors to the extravagant remnants of Madrid’s aristocratic heritage, Moore reveals his impeccable taste and unrivaled eye for light in some of the most surprising and original rooms in the world.

Each of the houses is accompanied by a commentary by noted architecture and interior design writer Mitchell Owens, and each is uniquely laid out in sympathy with its character by award-winning graphic designer Jonathan Barnbrook. Together, their vision has produced a testament both to extraordinary interior design and to the unique eye of a master of interior photography.

Author Timothy Whealon and Dan Shaw

An appealing approach to creating elegant, worldly interiors that are rooted in the comforts of home. Interior designer Timothy Whealon is beloved for his accessible style, his seamless blend of classic and modern influences, and his skillful use of artwork and antiques, thanks to an extensive knowledge of fine and decorative arts. Whealon’s design philosophy finds its roots in classicism; however, he approaches each project with a fresh, twenty-first-century eye that makes it both modern and timeless. He doesn’t believe in interiors that look “decorated,” as if everything has been done at once. Rather, he layers items from different periods and cultures, artfully mixing the pristine and the patinated.

This book is the first to showcase Whealon’s interiors, from an airy New York penthouse to a gracious Mediterranean-style villa to a casual beach cottage. Whether urban or rural, grand or intimate, each project exhibits classicism alongside comfort, careful attention to detail, and undeniable appeal. Many of the projects included have been newly photographed for this book, and each is a testament to Whealon’s exquisite taste and understanding of how people live today.

About the Author:

Timothy Whealon specializes in high-end interior design with a focus on fine and decorative arts. His work has been published in Elle Decor, House Beautiful, Veranda, Architectural Digest, the New York Times, and numerous books. India is diverse, multilayered, and rich in traditions with a past still passing by. Today India is able to maintain a ritualistic link with the heritage of the skilled craftsmanship, the remarkable presence of the past and the modern building process used; a high quality building stone and other traditional materials. The contemporary Indian design of today would not have being able to exist without the traditional one; as it is distinguished from the autonomous traditions of its ancient Hindu and Buddhist past. This volume at hand, the opens up a new dialogue between tradition and innovation, between craftsmanship and design and bringing both together to form what is now the contemporary design of India. Paying close attention to climate, flora, light, space, and material, to create a crafted space that adds richer texture and allows it to adapt a deeper meaning into the space; focusing on the essential, minimalist by heart and mood by its soul, being more than an aesthetic tool, instead meaningful. Contemporary Indian design is then born out of its cultural influences of its time and place to become the reference of its own culture. As a result, creating a crafted environment that speaks of a journey in time and space.

The sights, smells and sounds of India draw legions of travellers every year in awe of the changing terrain and countryside, but to truly experience the range and diversity of this huge country one needs to gaze into the many, spectacular residences, as rich and eclectic as the landscape that surrounds them. Indian Interiors provides a longing glimpse into these exotic abodes. India's visual culture is ruled by bright colours, religious decoration and the unrelenting heat of the sun, and designers have responded to this challenge in many ways over the centuries. With this book as guide, you can wander into the restored splendour of ancient Maharajas' palaces, enjoy living in houseboats on the lotus-covered lakes of Kashmir, or cool off in imposing colonial buildings built for British rulers wilting in the tropical heat. This is truly a world of contrasts, as we move from simple but beautifully hand-painted tribal huts to the L.A. influenced home of a Hollywood star, from a Buddhist house in Ladakh to the most original house designed in India by Le Corbusier. All the interiors here are lavishly photographed and documented.
