In this book, Helmut Jahn is revealed as an architect committed to exploring the material and perceptual possibilities of creating architecture in a new millennium, one with 'a simplicity of form and construction and a clear expression of its component parts and purpose,' as he describes it. Jahn's designs are both rational and intuitive; he attempts to give each building its own philosophical and intellectual base, and establishes an opportunity to exploit its particular elements to achieve a visual and communicative statement. He is committed to design excellence and the improvement of the urban environment. Now collaborating with structural, mechanical, and environmental engineers, along with physicists and materials manufacturers, Jahn is creating buildings that push glazing technology, environmental systems, and urban place-making to the limits. Introduction by Michael J. Crosbie, an internationally recognised architect, author, journalist, critic, and teacher.

To some extent, it is from museums that we learn about the past and present of a city. A museum is a materialised history; there, with the historical relics on display, we have dialogues with history. As we have realised that a museum would be a useful tool for the publicity of a city, museums have become projects that architects and designers most long for. In the book we selected 50 world-top museums, including history museums, art museums, science museums, etc. Each project is illustrated with pictures, plans and a brief introduction. While appreciating the museums, readers would learn more about the distinguished concepts and the distinct features of them.

In this book, the world’s most exciting new museums are shown to be as inspiring as the works they display.

The twenty-first century has seen a boom in museum construction, both in new buildings and renovations or additions to existing ones. Nearly thirty museums are given close inspection in this generously illustrated volume. Each entry includes a discussion of the building’s cultural and geographic environment, complemented by color photographs, sketches and architectural plans. The book encompasses four continents and highlights the designs of Frank Gehry, Renzo Piano, Steven Holl, Zaha Hadid, Mario Botta, David Chipperfield, Tadao Ando, Yoshio Taniguchi and Daniel Libeskind. In addition, the authors provide thoughtful commentary on the relationship between architecture and the fine arts and an assessment of museum functionality in modern times.

This book charts the history of muslin from India to Europe to America, illustrated by some of the finest examples from the V&A’s relatively unexplored collection of more than 900 objects, including men’s and women’s dress, dolls, and ballet costumes. Muslin has been used for everything from gowns for Mughal princes and delicate dresses to the humble baby’s diaper. Many Asian examples are dyed vivid colors and embellished with embroidery, gold, silver, spangles, and even propaganda, while in the West muslin was adapted to changing fashions throughout the 19th and 20th centuries and has been used by designers such as Vivienne Westwood and John Galliano.

About the Author:

Sonia Ashmore is a design historian specializing in aspects of cultural exchange and trade between Britain and Asia. She has been published widely and contributed to a number of V&A books, including British Asian Style.

The work of the MVRDV architectural studio can be seen as a symbol for the important turning point in Dutch architecture which took place in the 1990s and which set in motion a radical transformation of the country.

MVRDV, established in 1990, is made up of architects who studied under Rem Koolhaas. The practice is one of the most brilliant and stimulating exponents of recent Dutch modernism. Through its successful projects, international competitions and publications, it has demonstrated a new and experimental way of understanding and designing the contemporary city. At the end of the 1990s it took the spotlight with the VPRO building in Hilversum and the WoZoCo’s special residential buildings in Amsterdam; these projects were supported contemporaneously by the theoretical contributions entitled Farmax and Metacity/Datatown. MVRDV then gained international critical renown with the Dutch Pavilion for the Hanover Expo. The studio is one of the most dynamic concept and design realities in contemporary architecture, able to produce both theory and design, and actively renew the key words and language of architecture in the context of a reality in deep transformation.

This design philosophy can be seen in MVRDV’s most recent works, such as the two houses for Borneo-Sporenburg, the Silodam building of overlapping villas in Amsterdam, the Hageneiland village in Ypenburg, the Central Library in Brabant and the recent residential complex built in Madrid.

This publication by Michele Costanzo examines the entire body of MVRDV design work and theory, from its beginnings to recent thought-provoking buildings. In addition, it offers the reader an original critical look at contemporary Dutch architecture.

As minimalism in interior design becomes more prevalent, a new counter-movement has arisen.Eschewing the clean, precise, empty spaces minimalist themes promote, some homeowners and designers are adopting a resplendent, grand, baroque, look to their spaces. As a reaction against minimalism, this movement could only have one name: maximalism. This new movement is explored through exquisite photography of lush projects drawn from across the world.

This book presents inspiring work from around the world that is bringing nature back into our cities: from urban farming initiatives, guerilla gardening, and architectural visions, to furniture, products, and other everyday objects that use plants in a functional or aesthetic way.

Some of the included projects are changing the landscapes of our cities as a whole, while others can make our own streets and homes greener — most importantly, all are trying to get people to think differently.

For everyone who has an interest in a more responsible and environmentally friendly lifestyle, this entertaining and socially relevant book makes it clear that we can design our urban future in a way that's green, innovative, vibrant, and constructive.

Saying that an architectural form is naked is a typical affirmation of everyday language that synthesises multiple characters and meanings through a metaphor. Anti-decorative architecture of modern tradition is naked, buildings under construction or ruined are naked, as are in general those whose bare, essential appearance is intended to give an impression of sincerity. Any architecture expressing an archaic or frugal or even at times primitive atmosphere may also be considered naked.

Today, the return to nakedness in architecture may be interpreted as the symptom of the definitive crisis of post-modernism, of its masks and coverings that no longer represent a world with an ever-increasing need for “naked” essentialness.
