In the North African land of Morocco, every dar-dwelling, religious institution, or commercial building is organized around an interior, walled courtyard that provides privacy from the bustle of urban streets and an outdoor space for social interaction and tranquil meditation. Over the course of centuries, ornamental schemes have evolved to incorporate not only native plant life but also intricate water features and patterned tile work known as zellij, all of central significance to the Moroccan culture and climate.

Vitally important for providing shade and catching breezes in an arid landscape, Moroccan gardens are designed and cultivated with vibrant color and aromatic plants. Author Achva Benzinberg Stein explores the three main types of gardens — the simple and elegant paved patio form of the ouest ed-dar, the more elaborately planted riyad, and the agdal, an open, cultivated landscape. Striking color photographs, including numerous aerial views, show gardens and courtyards in Marrakech, Fez, and elsewhere.

This book highlights radical urban transformation in eight cities spread across continental Europe. The point of departure, and the foundation of European urbanisation, is the Roman colonial town. In every case social dynamics guided the urban transitions in a traceable way, such that it has been possible to deduce the intellectual underpinnings of the contemporary built environments, as featured in these pages. Differing contexts of time and place show the overarching march of European history and related themes at the urban level. Fundamental changes are brought to light. Each story demonstrates a separate and fundamental transition, ranging from earlier collective configurations to the more institutionalised structures of later periods.

This monograph is the first to document all of the built work by Morphosis, a Los Angeles-based practice headed by Thom Mayne and one of the most influential architecture firms of the past twenty years. Morphosis`s unconventional geometries beautifully executed, sculptural models and complex, computer-generated drawings helped to usher in a new era of architectural experimentation in the early 1980s. This book is comprised of bold, documentary-style colour photographs of thirty-five completed buildings presented in an almost cinematic layout, and publishes for the first time together all of Morphosis`s completed work, from the early residential and restaurant projects in Los Angeles to the most recent large-scale work beyond California and the United States in Canada, Taiwan, Korea, Japan and Austria. Thom Mayne founded Morphosis in 1972 in partnership with Michael Rotondi, who now has his own firm. Over the past twenty years, Maynes academic posts have included teaching positions at Columbia University, Harvard University, Yale University, the Berlage Institute in the Netherlands and the Bartlett School of Architecture in London, among other institutions.

One of the few truly visionary architects of large-scale commissions working today, Thom Mayne’s influential firm Morphosis, founded in the early 1970s, has maintained an avant-garde presence among contemporary architecture firms, even as it has garnered high-profile, big-budget commissions from around the world.

Since Rizzoli published Volume I of the Morphosis series in 1989, the Los Angeles–based firm has continued to push its intricate modernism into new territories. In the tradition of its four visually groundbreaking predecessors, this fifth volume packs 500 illustrations into a comprehensive tour of Morphosis’s activity.

New works covered in Volume V include Cal Trans Headquarters in Los Angeles (2004); the San Francisco Federal Office building (2006); the Wayne L. Morse United States Courthouse in Eugene, Oregon (2006); and the University of Cincinnati Student Recreation Center (2006). Projects in progress, such as the New Academic Building for the Cooper Union in New York (expected completion 2008) and the Phare Tower for La Defense, France (2012), will also be featured.

About the Author:

Thom Mayne is a professor of architecture at UCLA, and one of the founders of the avant-garde institution SCI-Arc (Southern California Institute of Architecture) in Los Angeles. In 1995 he won the Pritzker Prize. Jeffrey Kipnis is an architecture and design curator, critic, and professor at Ohio State University.

One of the few truly visionary architects of large-scale commissions working today, Thom Mayne won the 2005 Pritzker Architecture Prize, his field's most prestigious award.

Mayne's influential firm Morphosis, founded in the early 1970s, has maintained an avant-garde presence among contemporary architecture firms even as it has garnered high-profile, big-budget commissions around the world. Since Rizzoli published Volume I of the Morphosis series in 1989, the Los Angeles-based firm has attained the highest levels of international esteem and influence as it continues to push its intricate modernism into new territory. In the tradition of its three comprehensive and visually groundbreaking predecessors, this fourth volume packs 575 illustrations into its tour of Morphosis's activity at the turn of the twenty-first century.

And like other series of Rizzoli monographs, the Morphosis series is considered the authoritative record of the firm's work. New works covered in Volume IV include the extraordinary Cal Trans Headquarters in Los Angeles, housing designed for New York's 2012 Olympics bid, the San Francisco Federal Office Building, the NOOA Satellite Operations Facility, and major housing projects in Toronto and Shanghai constructed of glass and high-tech materials demonstrating the appealingly iconoclastic modernism of Thom Mayne and Morphosis.

Mighty Morris. The arts and crafts power of designer William Morris

William Morris was a polymath designer, writer, artist, and socialist activist, associated with England’s Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood as well as Arts and Crafts movement. His prolific design work included tiles, embroidery, tapestries, wallpaper, and carpets and championed handcraftsmanship, natural dyes, “art for all”, and beautiful patterns of subtly stylized natural forms.

William Morris (1834–1896) was one of the greatest creative figures of the 19th century. As a visionary designer, as well as a manufacturer, writer, artist, and socialist activist, he pioneered the Arts and Crafts movement of the Victorian era, and left an extraordinary influence on architecture, textile, and interior design.

This richly illustrated book offers a suitably beautiful introduction to Morris’s colourful life and all aspects of his design work, including interiors, tiles, embroidery, tapestries, carpets, and calligraphy. Though best known in his lifetime as a poet and author, it is these exquisite designs that secured Morris’s posthumous reputation. As page after page dazzles with their beautiful patterns and forms, we explore the pioneering craftsmanship and natural motifs that inspired them, as well as Morris’s remarkable cultural legacy, through British textiles, Bauhaus, and even modern environmentalism.

Granted, precious few of us can afford the incredible wine cellars featured, but thanks to THE MOST BEAUTIFUL WINE CELLARS IN THE WORLD we can visit. I hasten to add they're not only beautiful but their selections are impeccable.

Our visits, which include 60 wine cellars in Europe, North America, Lebanon and China, are arranged chronologically beginning with the older cellars and moving forward in history until we are amazed by a virtual wine cellar.

Opening with an Introduction that holds a description of the ideal cellar and focuses on temperature, humidity, lighting, vibration, etc. we are eager for our first stop which is Marques de Riscal, Elciego, Spain. Surrounded by gorgeous mountains and founded in 1858 it is the oldest cellar featured. Many may be surprised to see the eye-popping architecture designed by the one and only Frank Gehry Using the former Marques de Riscal cellar as the basis for his design he created a phenomenal structure over it. With a titanium exterior he incorporated the Marques de Riscal's colors - pink for the wine, gold for the mesh that covers the bottles, and silver for the bottleneck capsules. This complex includes a hotel, a restaurant, a business center and a health spa, which offers vinotherapy treatments.

A bit of heaven I'd be willing to stay for a long while but it is on to Thiessen Wijnkoopers, where the oldest parts of the subterranean cellars date to the 14th century and once formed part of the city's defenses. Next? France's Chateau Margaux where one of the best wines in the world is produced. And our travels have only begun.

Each of the cellars stands alone in its history, beauty, and originality. To have them all presented in this lush volume is a treasure.

Ce livre sans texte propose plusieurs milliers de gravures représentant des éléments ornementaux d’architecture pour la plupart en pierre, même si le bois, le fer et la calligraphie ne sont pas oubliés. Ces motifs ornementaux sont classés par ordre alphabétique, de Acanthe à Vase. Il peut s’agir de sculptures, de bas-relief, de moulures, de petits ou grands éléments d’architecture civile, militaire ou religieuse, de pièces décoratives et d’ornements divers.

Cet ouvrage est la réédition en un volume d’une revue mensuelle d’architecture qui fut publiée à partir de 1872, intitulée Matériaux et documents d’architecture, que dirigea l’architecte Antonin Raguenet. L’abondance et la précision des gravures, l’intérêt des ornements de toutes les époques, la variété des représentations ne pourront que combler le lecteur intéressé.

Ce livre sans texte contient 260 planches gravées, fac-similé d’un catalogue des fonderies de Somme voire datant de la fin du XIX^esiècle.

Cette fonderie, qui fut longtemps dirigée par Antoine Durenne, a porté la qualité technique à son plus haut niveau. La collaboration avec des sculpteurs et dessinateurs de tout premier plan (on peut citer Auguste Bartholdi, l’auteur de la Statue de la Liberté, Carrier- Belleuse, Emmanuel Frémiet, Mathurin Moreau et bien d’autres) lui permet de se hisser à la première place de la fonderie d’art et de la fonderie ornementale.

C’est à cette dernière qu’est consacrée cette réédition qui recueille des milliers de dessins de balcons, balustrades, appuis de croisée, panneaux de portes et lambrequins. Tous les styles classiques motifs ornementaux y sont représentés, depuis le gothique jusqu’au XIX^e siècle, constituant ainsi une immense source iconographique.
