Images of the Mediatheque have widely circulated in architectural media since 1995, when Toyo Ito's competition project revealed a new structural prototype (or archi-type) that expressed the will to incorporate the notions of mobility and fluidity into space and structure. Second in the series of Verb monographs, this book presents the process of design and construction of Ito's prototype during the six years between the building's initial design through to its completion in 2001. The Mediatheque aspires to integrate real and virtual worlds - or, in Ito's words, “the primitive body of natural flow and the virtual body of electronic flow”. The fantastical architectural visions Tchoban has captured on paper are not intended to be constructed physically, and reveal a surprising, introverted trait. As a leitmotif of his entire work he repeatedly incorporates the element of water, examining the phenomenon of ebb and flood, and the mystification of dream worlds. Strong spirits and intense emotions sculpt his images. Occasionally the coolness of Modernism and sobriety of the engineer’s construction dominate; at other times deep melancholy or romantic scenographies emerge, recalling images of classical stage designs or satirising the grand concetto.

Sergey Chernyshev (1881–1963), one of the founders of Soviet urban planning, deservedly occupies a special place among the leading Russian architects of the twentieth century. Already a respected architect before the Russian Revolution, his talent also gained recognition in the Soviet era. Chernyshev’s large-scale designs attracted widespread attention – from the 1935 Master Plan for the Reconstruction of Moscow to his work on the restoration of cities such as Kiev, Leningrad, Warsaw, and Berlin. Chernyshev’s designs have achieved global fame and recognition. Even in the dramatic years under the Stalin regime, Sergey Chernyshev sought to embody the concept of an “ideal society” in architecture and urban planning theories. He successfully implemented bold and innovative designs, at the same time managing to adhere to national architectural traditions and remain faithful to his own vision.

Summer at the Serpentine. Ten years of temporary pavilions by top architects

Since 2000, the Serpentine Gallery in London’s Kensington Gardens has called on some of the world’s top architects to design summer pavilions – temporary structures that are erected next to the Gallery itself for a three-month period. The Serpentine, which was built in 1934 as a tea pavilion, opened in 1970 as a showplace for exhibitions of modern and contemporary artists ranging from Matthew Barney to Dan Flavin, Ellsworth Kelley, Louise Bourgeois or Rachel Whiteread.
The pavilions in the Programme that was conceived in 2000 by the Serpentine Director Julia Peyton-Jones, are the work of international architects or design teams who at the time of the Serpentine’s invitation have not completed a building in England. A maximum of six months from invitation to completion is allotted. The only architecture program of its type in the world, the Serpentine Gallery Pavilions attract up to 250,000 visitors each summer. The Serpentine Pavilion is regularly ranked in the top 5 most attended architecture and design exhibitions worldwide in The Art Newspaper’s annual survey of museums and galleries visitor figures. The architect Richard Rogers has stated, “The pavilions, erected for reatively little money, are unbelievably good. I coudn’t single one out that I have liked more than the others – they have all been masterpieces.”

Shadowfolds are a rich blend of traditional motifs expressed in a contemporary style. The technique, pioneered by artist Chris K. Palmer, creates patterns from a single, uncut panel of cloth, using a simple, three-step process.

In Shadowfolds, Jeff Rutzky, himself an accomplished and passionate origamist, and Palmer offer detailed and fascinating information about the technique and its origins in both Moorish tile and classic Japanese origami. Palmer first encountered the elaborate mosaics of the Alhambra and became intrigued with learning to translate these patterns into folded paper. He turned for inspiration to the work of Japanese origami masters Tomoko Fuse, Jun Maekawa, Toshikazu Kawasaki and Shuzu Fujimoto, as well as to the great American origami artists Robert Lang and Peter Engel.

The transition to working in cloth followed. The flexible property of cloth allows pleats to be folded to augment and give a dimensionality not present in a flat surface; and the translucent quality adds a unique intricacy to the geometric patterns. When lines in a pattern are folded as pleats, the resulting shapes formed by the pleats become part of the artistic expression of the material.

Some applications take advantage of light shining through the fabric, others show the richness of the folds that have a depth all their own.
