Michel Bergeron, Paul Lacinski
ID: 10160
Издательство: Green Books

In 1994, when Chelsea Green published The Straw Bale House, the response from many people was a loud, "Huh?!"

Those days are gone. With more than 100,000 copies sold, and straw bale projects underway in most regions of North America, we've entered a new era. Even building-code officials and insurance companies now look favorably upon straw bale buildings, with their extraordinary energy efficiency and wise use of agricultural waste for construction materials.

Bergeron and Lacinski's new book Serious Straw Bale is the first to look carefully at the specific design considerations critical to success with a straw bale building in more extreme climates-where seasonal changes in temperature, precipitation, and humidity create special stresses that builders must understand and address. The authors draw upon years of experience with natural materials and experimental techniques, and present a compelling rationale for building with straw-one of nature's most resilient, available, and affordable byproducts.

For skeptics and true believers, this book will prove to be the latest word.

  • Thorough explanations of how moisture and temperature affect buildings in seasonal climates, with descriptions of the unique capacities of straw and other natural materials to provide warmth, quiet, and comfort year-round.
  • Comprehensive comparison of the two main approaches to straw bale construction: "Nebraska-style," where bales bear the weight of the roof, and framed structures, where bales provide insulation.
  • Detailed advice-including many well-considered cautions-for contractors, owner-builders, and designers, following each stage of a bale-building process.

This is a second-generation straw bale book, for those seeking serious information to meet serious challenges while adventuring in the most fun form of construction to come along in several centuries.

Summer at the Serpentine. Ten years of temporary pavilions by top architects

Since 2000, the Serpentine Gallery in London’s Kensington Gardens has called on some of the world’s top architects to design summer pavilions – temporary structures that are erected next to the Gallery itself for a three-month period. The Serpentine, which was built in 1934 as a tea pavilion, opened in 1970 as a showplace for exhibitions of modern and contemporary artists ranging from Matthew Barney to Dan Flavin, Ellsworth Kelley, Louise Bourgeois or Rachel Whiteread.
The pavilions in the Programme that was conceived in 2000 by the Serpentine Director Julia Peyton-Jones, are the work of international architects or design teams who at the time of the Serpentine’s invitation have not completed a building in England. A maximum of six months from invitation to completion is allotted. The only architecture program of its type in the world, the Serpentine Gallery Pavilions attract up to 250,000 visitors each summer. The Serpentine Pavilion is regularly ranked in the top 5 most attended architecture and design exhibitions worldwide in The Art Newspaper’s annual survey of museums and galleries visitor figures. The architect Richard Rogers has stated, “The pavilions, erected for reatively little money, are unbelievably good. I coudn’t single one out that I have liked more than the others – they have all been masterpieces.

The projects completed or envisaged include the work of

* Zaha Hadid, 2000
* Daniel Libeskind, 2001
* Toyo Ito, 2002
* Oscar Niemeyer, 2003
* MVRDV, 2004 (un-realised)
* Alvaro Siza and Eduardo Souto de Moura with Cecil Balmond, 2005
* Rem Koolhaas and Cecil Balmond, 2006
* Olafur Eliasson and Kjetil Thorsen, 2007
* Frank Gehry, 2008
* SANAA, 2009
* Jean Nouvel, 2010
* Other works such as Zaha Hadid's temporary 2006 installation Lilas are included in the book as well.

This book is the first to bring together all of the Serpentine Pavilions. Interviews of Serpentine Director Julia Peyton-Jones and Co-Director Hans Ulrich Obrist complete the description of the pavilions, illustrated by the original drawings by each architect and photos of the completed works.

Shadowfolds are a rich blend of traditional motifs expressed in a contemporary style. The technique, pioneered by artist Chris K. Palmer, creates patterns from a single, uncut panel of cloth, using a simple, three-step process.

In Shadowfolds, Jeff Rutzky, himself an accomplished and passionate origamist, and Palmer offer detailed and fascinating information about the technique and its origins in both Moorish tile and classic Japanese origami. Palmer first encountered the elaborate mosaics of the Alhambra and became intrigued with learning to translate these patterns into folded paper. He turned for inspiration to the work of Japanese origami masters Tomoko Fuse, Jun Maekawa, Toshikazu Kawasaki and Shuzu Fujimoto, as well as to the great American origami artists Robert Lang and Peter Engel.

The transition to working in cloth followed. The flexible property of cloth allows pleats to be folded to augment and give a dimensionality not present in a flat surface; and the translucent quality adds a unique intricacy to the geometric patterns. When lines in a pattern are folded as pleats, the resulting shapes formed by the pleats become part of the artistic expression of the material.

The possibilities for using Shadowfolds in design are limitless. Some applications take advantage of light shining through the fabric, others show the richness of the folds that have a depth all their own. In addition to explaining the three very simple steps of the technique, the authors show how even novice folders can create breathtaking works of textile art, as well as fashion-forward clothes, accessories and home furnishings incorporating these three-dimensional embellishments. They also include a section of patterns, and fabric and craft resources.

Once a fishing town nestled on the banks of the Yangtze River Delta on the east cost of China, Shanghai is now the country’s largest city and one of the world’s busiest ports. The city has been the cultural and economic center of eastern Asia for over a century and has become synonymous with all that is modern in China. This book adventures through Shanghai, giving readers a cross-section of the city’s loveliest and most exceptional interiors, such as a penthouse loft in a converted hardware factory with a rooftop greenhouse, controversial writer/superstar Mian Mian’s conceptual “art apartment,” the painstakingly restored “dream house” of a French archaeologist in the French Concession, and the sprawling, flamboyant apartment of art world diva Pearl Lam.

Master of innovation. Challenging accepted notions of architecture

Famed Japanese architect Shigeru Ban attended SCI-Arc in California and earned his degree at the Cooper Union School of Architecture in New York. With offices in Tokyo and Paris, Ban consistently challenges accepted notions of architecture, designing a house without walls, or an exhibition space made from paper tubes and shipping containers. This survey traces his entire career to date, showing clearly why he is one of the world’s most innovative and significant architects. Unlike many of his peers, Ban can create remarkable residences and still find time to design emergency relief housing for disaster areas from Kobe to New Orleans. Often using paper or cardboard tubes as a structural element, his designs give new meaning to the term "Paper Architect." His major completed works include the Furniture House at Lake Yamanaka, Japan, the Curtain Wall House in Tokyo, the Naked House in Kawagoe, Japan, the Japanese Pavilion at Hannover Expo 2000, the mobile Nomadic Museum, and his most recent masterpiece, the Centre Pompidou-Metz in France.

About the Series:
Every book in TASCHEN's Basic Architecture Series features:

  • approximately 120 images, including photographs, sketches, drawings, and floor plans
  • introductory essays exploring the architect's life and work, touching on family and background as well as collaborations with other architects
  • the most important works presented in chronological order, with descriptions of client and/or architect wishes as well as construction problems and resolutions
  • an appendix including a list of complete or selected works, biography, bibliography, and a map indicating the locations of the architect's most famous buildings

Master innovator: Challenging accepted notions of architecture

From emergency relief shelters to a cardboard cathedral and exhibition spaces in shipping containers, Pritzker-prize winning architect Shigeru Ban has made his name with his restlessly inventive response to material and situation, as much as with his humanitarian work at the sites of natural and man-made disasters.

In the spirit of three-dimensional poetry, Ban uses materials as an incorporated part of his design, selected not for their cutting-edge credentials but rather for their expressive ability, their capacity to convey the building’s overall concept. In particular, Ban has made regular use of paper tubing in projects as varied as the Japanese Pavilion at Expo 2000 and emergency shelters for Rwanda’s Byumba Refugee Camp.

This essential introduction, compiled with Ban’s own collaboration, presents every one of his projects to date to survey the full reach and importance of, in the words of the Pritzker Prize jury, a “committed teacher who is not only a role model for a younger generation but also an inspiration.”

About the series:

Each book in TASCHEN’s Basic Architecture series features:
- an introduction to the life and work of the architect
- the major works in chronological order
- information about the clients, architectural preconditions as well as construction problems and resolutions
- a list of all the selected works and a map indicating the locations of the best and most famous buildings
- approximately 120 illustrations (photographs, sketches, drafts, and plans)

Commercial architecture allows many people to enjoy a type of architecture that is reserved for a select few in its residential version. Fashionable companies are aware of the appeal of this phenomenon and are increasing their investment in hte location and design of their brands and added attraction. Furthermore, carefully planned commercial architecture also offers the opportunity to embody abstract concepts like brand values by using design to avoke specific sensation, in the same way as advertising and marketing. In this book, we wanted to present architecture involving major brands and architects, but alsoto throw light on the work of less well-known architects unafraid of innovation and risk.
