Philippe Starck

"We have to replace beauty, which is a cultural concept, with goodness, which is a humanist concept." – Philippe Starck

Philippe Starck wants to bring love and happiness into your life by designing objects, environments, and appliances that will brighten your days. He spent his childhood under his father's drawing boards, sawing, cutting, gluing, and sanding, dismantling bikes, motorcycles and other objects. Several years and several prototypes later, he has changed life at the French presidential palace, the Italians have asked him to renew the notion of furniture, and he has turned the Royalton and Paramount in New York into the first classics of the new hotel world.

Starck's overwhelming international success and cult-star status are proof that people everywhere are receptive to his kindhearted philosophy and distinctive aesthetic sensibility. The democratic design projects that he has undertaken with Target (USA) and j/ii (Japan), as well as the TASCHEN bookshops in Paris and Los Angeles and the Bon restaurant chain, are among the projects included in this volume that traces the entire career of today's foremost design superhero.

The designer:
Philippe Starck is an internationally acclaimed French creator, designer and architect. This untiring and rebellious citizen of the world, who considers it his duty to share his ethical and subversive vision of a fairer planet, creates unconventional objects whose purpose is to be “good” before being beautiful. Most of his designs have become cult objects, and his hotels are timeless icons that have added a new dimension to the global cityscape. An enthusiastic advocate of sustainability, this visionary recently developed the revolutionary concept of “democratic ecology” by creating affordable wind turbines for the home, soon to be followed by innovative wooden prefabricated ecological houses and solar boats. He himself lives, with his wife Jasmine, mostly on airplanes, and in Paris, Burano, and on his oyster farm in the southwest of France.

Railway stations have long held a special place in the public’s affection. The lure of the great terminus has been especially strong, the breathtaking grandeur of its architecture fused with a promise of adventure and escape. This book is a celebration of the railway station’s life and architecture. It examines the history of these fascinating structures, the great events – both fictional and real – that have occurred there, and how they have formed an integral part of the life of the cities they serve. Steven Parissien discusses the many architectural styles and developments that stations have witnessed over the past 150 years – from the early provincial and colonial railways, the Victorian Gothic of London’s St Pancras and the Beaux-Arts splendour of Grand Central Station in New York, to the modern structural feats of Nicholas Grimshaw’s Waterloo International Terminal and Santiago Calatrava’s Lyon Satolas. Archive pictures, railway ephemera and new photography are combined to create a fascinating visual record for all those interested in trains, railway stations and travel.

Steel is one of the most versatile materials available in the construction industry and its many applications have enabled architects and engineers to go far beyond what was once considered possible. The second volume in this new series documents all aspects of steel as a construction material. Just like the Glass Construction Manual, this volume first looks at the historical development of building with steel. This is followed by several chapters which examine to a high degree of technical detail the physical properties of the material, the principles of construction using steel and the wide spectrum of the use of steel elements. The final chapter presents 54 examples which illustrate the many applications of steel in construction-from simple halls to complex multistorey buildings. These examples were selected because of their innovative use of steel, demonstrating its great potential for minimising the necessary materials and montage. For ease of comparison all the plans have been drawn to the same scale. The volume concludes with an extensive bibliography and a listing of the relevant norms and regulations, making this work an indispensable reference for all architects and engineers.

Architecture has advanced quickly in the field of  constructive materials, which are fundamental when fulfilling dreams of raising massive buildings. Amongst these materials that have had the biggest influence in the creation of this kind of architecture is steel. As a result of a carbon-alloy, steel is ductile but at the same time resistant and tough. Today it is not only present in the structure of all types of buildings, but also used in designs for household objects and plays a major role in avant-garde interior design.
On the basis of about 40 projects this book shows how multifariously steel can be leveraged. Plans of the projects will be shown as far as available. An index of contact information of the designer and architects is enclosed.
