ID: 8983
Издательство: Thames & Hudson

This is the first book devoted to Tiffany lamps in more than 20 years. Experts in the field have made a selection of exceptional lamps - many of which have rarely been seen or published - and each one has been newly photographed with the latest photographic techniques to reveal in extraordinary detail the artistic quality and high craftsmanship of these masterpieces of decorative art.

Martin Eidelberg and Alice Cooney Frelinghuysen have contributed essays on the history of the lamps, enlarging our understanding of Louis Comfort Tiffany's achievement. They have drawn upon a host of previously unpublished photographs, paintings, and watercolors by Tiffany and other artists in his employ, as well as on working drawings and studio photographs, and images evoking the lost gardens and interiors of Tiffany's country estate, Laurelton Hall, that so inspired him. They outline the development and manufacture of the Tiffany lamp from freehand sketch to finished form, as well as the chief decorative themes in Tiffany's glass masterpieces and their relation to the work of other fin de siecle glassmakers.

Alexa Hampton
ID: 6823
Издательство: Clarkson Potter

At an early age, Alexa Hampton learned the language of good design, the vocabulary to speak it, and the elements that define it. As the daughter of interior design legend Mark Hampton, she traveled the world by her father’s side, touring the great architectural landmarks and discovering beauty, training her eye.

Now one of America’s most influential designers herself, Alexa Hampton provides a tour of stunning residences from her own portfolio.

Eighteen classic spaces illustrate in rich detail the elements that govern cultivated design - contrast, proportion, color, and balance. Among the residences are a landmark 1912 McKim, Mead & White restoration on Fifth Avenue in New York City; an eclectic house by the sea layered in textures, patterns, and colors; a contemporary apartment distinguished by simple geometry and clean lines; and Hampton’s own apartment, filled with an exquisite collection of architectural elements.

Hampton also explains how she tailored each space to meet her clients’ needs while retaining a timeless aesthetic, and she provides design expertise on everything from fabric schemes to the particulars of paint. From a French neoclassical tour de force of architec-ture, artwork, and design to a Queen Anne summer cottage furnished to showcase the house’s graceful nineteenth-century dimensions, the spaces here speak the language of design - a language that, under Hampton’s tutelage, anyone can master.

Издательство: Thames & Hudson

The definitive worldwide architectural history of the library, with spectacular original photography by one of the finest architectural photographers at work today

Ambitious and wide-ranging, this is the first single-volume to tell the story of the library as a distinct building type, all around the world and from the beginnings of writing to the present day.

Book collections have always served to display their owners’ culture and learning and the word ‘library’ has come to mean not only the books themselves, but also the buildings that house them. Each age and culture has moulded them to reflect its own priorities and preoccupations – mirroring the history of civilization itself.

In its highest form the library became a total work of art, combining painting, sculpture, furniture and architecture. From their designs for the libraries of ancient Rome to those of the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris, architects have sought to outdo each other by producing ever more spectacular settings.

The author and photographer have travelled the globe, documenting some eighty libraries. Architectural historian James Campbell contributes an authoritative and highly readable account. Will Pryce is one of the world’s leading photographers of interiors and architecture. Arresting and technically flawless, his photographs are both lucid and deeply atmospheric.

Contents List:

Preface; Introduction • 1. Lost Beginnings – Libraries in the Ancient World • 2. Cloisters, Codices and Chests – Libraries in the Middle Ages• 3. Cupboards, Chains and Stalls – Libraries in the Sixteenth Century • 4. Walls, Domes and Alcoves – Libraries in the Seventeenth Century • 5. Angels, Frescoes and Secret Doors – Libraries in the Eighteenth Century • 6. Iron Stacks, Gas Lights and Card Catalogues – Libraries in the Nineteenth Century • 7. "A woman once rang me up and said, 'Mr. Escher, I am absolutely crazy about your work. In your print Reptiles, you have given such a striking illustration of reincarnation.' I replied, ‘Madame, if that`s the way you see it, so be it.`" An engagingly sly comment by the renowned Dutch graphic artist Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898–1972) - the complex ambiguities of whose work leave hasty or single-minded interpretations far behind. Long before the first computer-generated 3-D images were thrilling the public, Escher was a master of the third dimension. His lithograph "Magic Mirror" dates as far back as 1946. In taking that title for this book, mathematician Bruno Ernst is stressing the magic spell Escher`s work invariably casts on those who see it. Ernst visited Escher every week for a year, systematically talking through his entire œuvre with him. Their discussions resulted in a friendship that gave Ernst intimate access to the life and conceptual world of Escher. Ernst`s account was meticulously scrutinized and made accurate by the artist himself.

Escher`s work refuses to be pigeonholed. Scientific, psychological, or aesthetic criteria alone cannot do it justice. The questions remain. Why did he create the pictures? How did he construct them? What preliminary studies were necessary before he could arrive at the final version? And how are the various images Escher created interrelated? This book, complete with biographical data, 250 illustrations, and explications of mathematical problems, offers answers to these and many other questions and is an authentic source text of the first order.

The author and editor Henri Stierlin has based his presentation of these most remarkable examples of Mayan architecture on the latest findings from excavations in Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and Belize. Cities have been rediscovered in the depths of the rain forest, along with soaring pyramids, mysterious tombs, palaces with frescoes and steles. Particularly intriguing is the fact that, although this very advanced civilisation evolved completely separately from that of the "Old World", the architectural parallels are astonishing. Only very recently has it been possible to decipher Mayan hieroglyphics to any great extent. This new research is used to full advantage by this volume as a key to unlock the mystery of Mayan architecture.

Inspired by the romance of Italian villas, Spanish farmhouses, and Moorish courtyards, the Mediterranean Revival style became an archetype for sophisticated suburban homes throughout America in the early 20th century. The characteristic white stucco house, roofed with terra-cotta and ornamented with ironwork, decorative tiles, and fountains, remains the dominant style for new residences in California, the Southwest, and Florida.

The Mediterranean house’s longevity is rooted in an overall simplicity and an emphasis on the outdoors. Its central courtyard, terraces, and loggias provide a fluidity between interiors and exteriors equally prized by the architects of ancient Pompeii and groundbreaking modernists.

The Mediterranean House in America provides the first comprehensive survey of this popular style, beautifully illustrated in full-color photographs by Juergen Nogai, archival photos, and drawings.
