In England, gardening and garden-visiting are national obsessions. More than 80 years ago, the National Gardens Scheme (NGS) was founded with the aim of raising money for charity by opening gardens of quality and interest to the public. In the first year, some 600 gardens were opened. Today, over 3800 gardens – many of them privately owned and opened for just a few days each year – are listed in The Yellow Book, the annual guide published by the NGS.

The Gardens of England gives you the opportunity to enjoy 50 of the country’s greatest garden gems from the comfort of your armchair. Each of the five chapters is written by a different leading gardens expert, and surveys 10 gardens opened as part of the NGS during a particular period. George Plumptre, Chief Executive of the NGS, provides an engaging introduction on garden-visiting, and 12 well-known gardeners offer a personal account of their favourite NGS garden. Featuring established and new gardens of all styles, this is a book that no lover of the English garden should be without

_Showcases 50 of the best gardens of the National Gardens Scheme from its beginnings in 1927 to the present day
_Features a wide range of garden styles, and both private and public gardens
_A beautiful book for garden lovers everywhere, and for anyone interested in garden history

The Georgian house - whether on a Georgetown street or in a leafy suburb- is considered among the most desireable and comfortable of homes. The Georgian style has stood the test of time, and continues to be popular today. Houses built over two hundred years ago still stand as proud and dignified as when they were first erected.

The book describes the development of the Georgian style, beginning with its intro in the early 18th century up to the mid 19th century. Chapters are also devoted to each element of the house to help understand the ideas, techniques, and materials employed by the original builders. The most complete study of the historical development and importance of the Georgian style, this book is also a practical guide to preserving and restoring a Georgian house.

Foreword by Paul Goldberger, Text by Philip Johnson

Издательство: Rizzoli

Philip Johnson designed some of America’s greatest modern architectural landmarks — most notably the Glass House. This new publication, with a foreword by Paul Goldberger and essay by Philip Johnson, presents an exclusive tour of the Glass House, its grounds, treasures, and patrons, and honours the legacy of one of modern architecture’s most famous creations.

Johnson’s private residence on forty-seven acres in New Canaan, Connecticut, which opened to the public in 2007, preserves some of the most exciting innovations in the fields of architecture, art, and landscape design, executed under the tutelage of Johnson and partner David Whitney over the course of nearly fifty years. This book serves as a virtual visit to the modern masterpiece and its grounds. Included are photographs of the interiors and exterior facades, as well as snapshots of Johnson and guests on the premises. An introduction to the work of Philip Johnson, The Glass House appeals to visitors of the house and enthusiasts of modern architecture and design.

About The Author

Paul Goldberger is the architecture critic for the New Yorker and the author of several books, including Why Architecture Matters, Building Up and Tearing Down: Reflections on the Age of Architecture, and Christo and Jeanne-Claude.

Philip Johnson designed some of America’s greatest modern architectural landmarks, including the Glass House, the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, numerous homes, New York’s AT&T Building (now Sony Plaza), Houston’s Transco (now Williams) Tower and Pennzoil Place, the Fort Worth Water Gardens, and the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, California.

When John Ruskin disparaged the Crystal Palace as 'a great cucumber frame', he hit upon a truism. Representing the zenith of Victorian glasshouses, the Crystal Palace epitomized a building type that had been developed by horticulturists and garden specialists on a sophisticated level and a spectacular scale. John Hix's ground-breaking book on the subject, first published in 1974, has been extensively revised and rewritten for this new edition.

The Glasshouse traces the evolution of the building type back to antiquity and goes on to describe developments in the sixteenth century when houses and orangeries were first constructed in glass. The history continues into the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries when increasingly complex structures were built incorporating iron and industrial construction techniques. The contribution of innovators such as Joseph Paxton and J C Loudon is charted and their influence on the pioneers of twentieth-century design such as Paul Scheerbart and Bruno Taut is examined.

- Traces the evolution of the glass building from its humble hothouse beginnings to the climate-controlled, high-tech structures of the 20th century
- A wide range of horticultural and other building types, including early 16th-century orangeries and examples from the 18th and 19th centuries when increasingly more complex structures, incorporating iron and industrial construction techniques
- Charts the contributions of innovators such as Joseph Paxton and John C Loudon and their influence on pioneers of 20th-century design such as Paul Scheerbart and Bruno Taut
- Illustrated with a wide selection of archival and contemporary photographs, etchings and lithographs

Indias most dazzling architecture is presented in all its diversity through specially commissioned photography and erudite text that places each monument within its historical, cultural, and technical context. Between the twelfth and the mid-nineteenth centuries, most of the Indian subcontinent was under Muslim domination, giving rise to a unique architectural blend of Islamic, Turkish, and Persian influences. Yves Porter provides the full panorama of this astonishing ensemble, explaining in depth the key monuments of each period and region, which are accompanied by Gerard Degeorges photographs of the monuments and architectural details. During the long reign of the Mughal Dynasty (15261857), the architecture of the subcontinent passed through some especially brilliant phases. Humayuns tomb at Delhi (1565); Fatehpur Sikri (briefly the capital of Akbar); the Shalimar gardens in Lahore, Pakistan; or the unforgettable Taj Mahal at Agra (1632) are just a few examples. In this scholarly work, Yves Porter provides a comprehensive history of Muslim architecture on the Indian subcontinent, redressing an important lack of coverage on the subject.

TASCHEN's 25th anniversary - Special edition!

Architect Harry Seidler has spent more than 50 years traveling the globe, extensively photographing the peak achievements in architecture from 3000 B.C. to the present day. Thanks to sound advice given to him early on by his photographer brother Marcell (“Only use Leica cameras and Kodachrome film, which is archival”), Seidler’s hobby quickly developed into a passion and, finally, an impressive archive of world architecture.

Including, of course, many of the world’s most famous architectural structures, Seidler’s photographs illustrate the history and style — country by country — of architecture in Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and the Americas. Divided into chapters by country, each with a brief introduction outlining its architectural history, The Grand Tour offers armchair travelers, students, architecture buffs, and historians the opportunity to browse the buildings of the world through one man’s photographs — the fruits of a passionate, half-century endeavor.

This beautiful book reveals eight grand houses that have remained in the same families from the time they were built until the present day, and which are still lived in by those families.

The Great Family Houses of Europe reveals the secrets that kept these homes in private hands despite wars, revolutions and ever-escalating taxes. Each family found its own solutions to the problems, most involving compromises, but after the public leaves for the day, the beautiful rooms are again filled with candlelight and liveried servants, the Sevres or Nymphenberg services come out of the pantry, guests arrive in evening dress, entertaining conversation replaces the babble of guided tours.

This is the inside view we see in atmospheric photographs, and in a revealing text made possible by the author’s long friendships with the owners of these great houses.

The houses include:
Seville’s Casa de Pilatos, owned by Spain’s most illustrious grandee;
Harewood House in Yorkshire, owned by a cousin of Queen Elizabeth
Schloss Regensburg, occupied by the flamboyant Princess Gloria von Thurn and Taxis
Palazzo Sachetti near Vatican City, whose enormous Sala dei Mapi is entirely frescoed by Francesco Salviati (1510–1563).

The garden - a place for refined pleasure and spiritual relaxation - has its roots in ancient China. Western travelers from Marco Polo onward marveled at the intricacy, the elaborate buildings, the subtle design, and the assured use of plants, water, and natural materials in Chinese landscapes. The Great Gardens of China shows, through stunning original photography and cogent text, both the visual splendors of China’s finest gardens and explains their ideas and techniques in accessible terms. Now every gardener, architect, or designer can understand China’s garden heritage and be inspired to use it to dramatic effect.

Beginning with an introduction to Chinese beliefs and the historical development of garden design, this book discusses the basic aesthetics and landscaping elements - architecture, rock stacking, waterscapes, plants, borders, and scenic routes - used in Chinese garden design. The author, an expert in the history and theory of Chinese and international gardens, also describes specific gardens, from famed world cultural heritage sites like the Summer Palace in Beijing and the gardens of Suzhou - Lion Grove, Humble Administrator’s, Lingering, and Master-of-Nets Gardens - to the lesser known. The Great Gardens of China serves as a compendium - in text and illustration - of all facets of the Chinese garden.

Mixing gorgeous interiors with sparkling social history, this is the first book on the visionary women whose work gave us the timeless, essential principles of modern interior decorating.

In 1904, Elsie de Wolfe was given a contract to design the interiors of the Colony Club. Their success launched de Wolfe’s career and the entire field of professional interior decoration. Soon other women followed, known collectively (for their privileged backgrounds) as the Lady Decorators. This book focuses on the extraordinary, glamorous interiors of these influential designers, as well as their decorating theory and maxims, from Rose Cumming’s electric color combinations ("Parrots are blue and green. Why shouldn’t fabric be?") to Nancy Lancaster’s refined English-country-house look ("She liked for the sun to get to . . . materials. She wanted them to go shabby and live a life of their own."). A witty and readable treatise on the principles of decorating, as well as a luxurious visual resource, this book will be an essential addition to every decorating library. Also including: Dorothy Draper, Elsie Cobb Wilson, Ruby Ross Wood, Frances Elkins, Eleanor Brown, Sister Parish, Syrie Maugham, Madeleine Castaing.

From the arid deserts of Tucson, Arizona to the icy forests of Poori, Finland to the tropical beaches of New South Wales, Australia to the urban jungle of downtown Manhattan, critics Alanna Stang and Christopher Hawthorne have traveled to the farthest reaches of the globe to find all that is new in the design of sustainable, or "green," homes. The result: more than thirty-five residences in fifteen countries--and nearly every conceivable natural environment -- designed by a combination of star architects and heretofore unknown practitioners.

Six different climactic zones are presented in The Green House - waterfront, forest and mountain, tropical, desert, suburban, and urban; there is also a section on mobile dwellings. Each chapter features a series of homes that show the diversity and possibility of sustainable design. Projects are presented with large color images, plans, drawings, and an accompanying text that describes their green features and explains how they work with and in the environment.

Architects included: Santiago Calatrava, Shigeru Ban, Miller/Hull, Rick Joy, Lake Flato, Kengo Kuma, Glenn Murcutt, Pugh & Scarpa, Werner Sobek, and many others.

The Green House is not only a beautiful object in its own right, but is sure to be an indispensable reference for anyone building or interested in sustainable design -- and if you ask us, that should be everyone.
