The design work of Marc Appleton's practise is a collaborative process with its clients, inspired by and responsive to their specific desires and needs. Frequently, it draws upon the time-honoured traditions of vernacular architecture, subtly reinterpreting them to evoke a presence of the past.

The firm strives to avoid a repetitiously personalized style and is committed to the idea that architecture is a craft rather than an art, a process rather than an object. Appleton agrees with fellow Californian architect William Wurster's view that architecture is for people, 'the picture frame, and not the picture'.

Including in-depth technical explanations and hundreds of colour photographs, this work is as attractive as it is practical. With dozens of new proposals for house design, each project is accompanied by a comprehensive analysis of each phase in the design and building processes. It also includes a breakdown of the materials and techniques used, making this a necessary volume for architects and designers.

Over the course of time designers have managed to optimise fireplaces to avoid problems such as smoke and smells. However, heating the home is no longer the sole aim of chimneys and heaters. They create cosy, warm atmospheres, allowing us to enjoy the magnetism of their flames. This book presents designs of both wood and gas fuelled chimenys and heaters, made from a variety of materials and original designs.

Much of modern architecture has been conceived using glass to create minimal structures, to extol the notion of lightweight construction solutions and to allow maximum daylight into buildings. However, it is only in the last 15 years that the full potential of glass architecture has been realised. So, the patio has become one more room in a house, standing out from the others through its lack of roof and its primary function as a place intended for relaxtion.
