Stone Houses: Traditional Homes of Pennsylvania’s Bucks County and Brandywine Valley is a unique presentation of beloved building traditions in one of the most charming and historically significant regions in the nation. Houses, barns, and outbuildings dating from the colonial and Federal periods, built with local stone predominantly in an English Cotswold vernacular style, represent a form that has become popular across the nation.
Geoffrey Gross’s stunning photographs document a remarkable collection of early buildings, including the John Chad House (circa 1720), Peter Wentz Farmstead (circa 1758), and Buckingham Friends Meeting House (1768), as well as more recent designs, in part inspired by such traditional homes, by architects R. Brognard Okie, G. Edwin Brumbaugh, and John D. Milner. Part of the original Pennsylvania Colony founded in March of 1681 by William Penn, the region encompassing Bucks County and the Brandywine Valley is important not only for its history as an early English settlement in the New World, but also for its role as a crucial site in the struggle for American independence.
The evidence for this is obvious in the story of its houses. Some notable examples include the Thompson-Neely House at Washington Crossing, in which, it is said, Washington’s officers were billeted during the famous night of his crossing of the Delaware, and Pennsbury Manor, the reconstructed home of William Penn. With its authoritative text and exquisite full-color photography, Stone Houses is a beautiful record of a historically rich regional building tradition.
- The first book by distinguished designer John Saladino
- Inspiration for home and garden design
- Contains 200 full-color photographs, and a special gatefold feature
- An invaluable reference book, superbly designed and produced
In this volume, US design guru John Saladino reveals the secrets that made him one of the world's most respected interior designers. He reveals the inspiration behind his design philosophy with its mastery of colour, light and scale. Showing how lessons from the classical world can be implemented in contemporary design, he talks through the design principles that guide him and explains how he applies these principles to settings as well as suggesting solutions for your own home. Chapter by chapter he moves from discussing essential considerations such as light and colour to the more ambitious skills of mastering scale, illusion and exaggeration.
John Saladino is a graduate of Notre Dame and the Yale School of Art and Architecture. He worked in Rome with the architect Piero Sartogo before returning to New York where he opened his own architectural and interior design practice over 35 years ago. It is now known as The Saladino Group Inc. In 1986 he started his own furniture company. He has won numerous interior design and furniture awards (including the prestigious Daphne Award) and he is on the Board of Directors of the John Soane Museum in London. His interiors regularly appear in international magazines including House Beautiful, House and Garden, the New York Times Magazine, Architectural Digest, Vogue Decoration and the World of Interiors.
The book selects more than 60 domestic top projects, mostly masterpieces from Vanke, Poly, China Overseas, Greenland, etc and some of the projects are winners of the 7th Kinpan Award.
Starting from style integration and innovation, the book shows how buildings, while adopting the oriental, Western, traditional and modern style, meanwhile innovate for further development, to thus discuss how to integrate different styles and organically combine with the local culture, and to provide professional readers with design concepts and skills.

Romantic seaside houses in the beloved Shingle Style, from Maine to Montauk.
This book will delight and inspire readers with its luxurious treatment of homes in this beloved architectural style, which has become an expression of the romantic longing for a life by the sea. Featuring all-new photography taken especially for the book, it looks at both the historic and new Shingle Style houses.
The Shingle Style is one of the few purely American genres of architecture and was closely linked to the Aesthetic and the Arts and Crafts movements. Prominent architects, including H. H. Richardson, William Ralph Emerson, and Frank Lloyd Wright, were influenced by the style and contributed to its milieu. Architects and architectural movements, including postmodernism, have continued to be influenced by this style. This volume begins with a well-documented history and then considers some of the more exemplary houses of the style in its original and modern manifestations. Some of the more notable homes featured are McKim, Mead & White’s Ochre Point in Newport, Rhode Island, the Quackenbush House in East Hampton, and Grey Gardens, the famously ramshackle residence of Edith Bouvier Beale and her daughter “Little Edie” — the eccentric aunt and first cousin of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis —, as well as contemporary manifestations of the style, such as the Robert A.M. Stern–designed Chilmark Residence, in Martha’s Vineyard, and Shope Reno Wharton’s Black Watch, in Jamestown, Rhode Island.
