For the Love of Trees. The illustrated encyclopedia of wood types, now in a gold edition

A painstaking facsimile reproducing all specimen pages from the original volumes of Romeyn Beck Hough’s American Woods, an indispensable reference work of breathtaking beauty that has set the standard for the study of trees and wood. In this luxurious gold edition, each specimen is broken down in three cross-section cuts, revealing its unique characteristics, grain, colours, and texture.

Culled and assembled by Romeyn Beck Hough between 1888 and 1913 in what still remains a stunning and unparalleled achievement, American Woods—originally published in 14 volumes, with actual specimens mounted on card stock — is a work of breathtaking beauty that has set the standard for the study of trees and wood.

The Woodbook reproduces, in painstaking facsimile, all of the specimen pages from the original volumes; for this purpose, TASCHEN obtained an extremely rare original set of volumes in very good condition, with minimal damage to the wood cuts.

Arranged in alphabetical order, each tree is broken down into three different cross-section cuts of wood (radial, horizontal, and tangential), demonstrating the particular characteristics of the grain and the wealth of colours and textures to be found among the many different wood types.

Also included in this special edition are lithographs by Charles Sprague Sargent of the leaves and nuts of most trees, as well as texts explaining each tree’s geographical origins and physical characteristics.

The presented projects demonstrate the sheer endless possibilities of timber for architecture and interior design. From an aesthetic point of view, they also show completely new ways for, but not limited to, the design of individual homes.

___________

Wood is without a doubt en-vogue with its impressive natural qualities. The residences presented in this volume are vivid manifestations of Frank Lloyd Wright’s statements that wood is "universally beautiful to man" and "the most humanly intimate of all materials.” The selected contemporary projects from around the world demonstrate the sheer endless possibilities for the use of timber in architecture and interior design.

The shown architectural solutions emphasize the unparalleled advantages of this renewable building material, both in terms of design and function. Furthermore, they highlight the amazing versatility of wood, with a special focus on a large number of recently developed new techniques, processing options, and innovations. An important material for many centuries and used in countless diverse ways before being almost despised for a long time in the modern era, wood has now become a source of fascination and inspiration in contemporary architecture.

The sustainable and locally available building material is easy to process, structurally very powerful and extremely simple to combine with other materials. It insulates against heat as well as cold, but is also breathable – excellent qualities for a pleasant and healthy interior climate.

Along with these practical considerations, it is the unlimited abundance of creative possibilities that accounts for the ever-growing popularity of residential dwellings made of wood. From one-story bungalows to multi-story dwellings, timber houses are at the forefront of the development of contemporary architecture and design. This volume presents the huge creative diversity of individual solutions from across the globe.

Why wood?

Though it is one of the world’s oldest building materials, wood is still revolutionizing the way buildings are designed and constructed today. It is imperative that everyone considers how construction practices impact climate change. Timber buildings are not only environmentally responsible — they also make us feel measurably happier, healthier, and more productive, benefiting both individuals and organizations.

Shigeru Ban Architects has innovated in wood for over 35 years, creating inspiring spaces that have a positive impact on building inhabitants, communities, and the environment. The firm has built over 65 wood and mass timber projects, from prefabricated plywood houses to parametrically modeled glulam gridshells.

Timber in Architecture presents the trajectory of 45 works from concept through construction, demonstrating the challenges and merits of wood buildings through essays, technical drawings, and photographs. Featured projects include the Centre Pompidou-Metz (Metz, France, 2010), the Aspen Art Museum (Aspen, Colorado, USA, 2014), the Mt. Fuij World Heritage Centre (Shizuoka, Japan, 2019), and Swatch/Omega Campus (Biel/Bienne, Switzerland, 2019), as well as current works.

About the Authors:

Shigeru Ban is an architect, educator, and humanitarian with a global perspective. Upon completing his studies at the Cooper Union, Ban established Shigeru Ban Architects in 1985. In 1994, Ban founded the Voluntary Architects Network, an NGO through which he has provided a wide array of relief projects for nearly 30 years. Today, his multidisciplinary practice includes offices in Tokyo, Paris, and New York, with more than 150 projects constructed across six continents. In addition to his design work, Ban is dedicated to teaching the next generation of architects, and has taught at numerous institutions, including Tama Art University, Keio University, Harvard GSD, Cornell AAP, and Columbia GSAPP. For his architectural, cultural, and humanitarian contributions, Ban has been honored as a Pritzker Laureate, and the recipient of L’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, the National Order of the Legion of Honor in France, the Thomas Jefferson Foundation Medal in Architecture, and the Mother Teresa Award for Social Justice.

Charming old houses in a uniquely American form are lovingly showcased in this engaging book.

Romantic, imaginative, and eminently photogenic, Carpenter Gothic homes feature fairy-tale–like exterior details — steep gables; pointed arches, windows, and doors; elaborate gingerbread trim; and porches — in addition to one-of-a-kind, highly desired interior features that imbue the homes with a wealth of character — arched entryways, bay windows, stained glass, fireplaces, and wooden ceiling beams.

The first of the Victorian romantic architectural revivals to sweep America during the nineteenth century, the Carpenter Gothic style was inspired by the pattern books of Andrew Jackson Downing and made possible by the invention of the steam-powered scroll saw. Homebuilders created these delightfully fanciful houses in most states across the country.
Storybook Cottages highlights both the picturesque exteriors of these homes as well as the incomparable interiors that give them such warmth. Presented are stunning photographs by Paul Rocheleau, Tim Street-Porter, Steve Gross, and Sue Daley, among others, along with illustrative examples from Downing’s pattern books, and black-and-white images from the Historic American Buildings Survey.

The text examines the roots of the style, from Medieval Europe and Gothic cathedrals through Inigo Jones, Augustus Pugin, and the Gothic Revival; the role of the American Gothic, from the pattern books of Andrew Jackson Downing and Alexander Jackson Davis (Rural Residences, Victorian Cottage Residences, The Architecture of Country Houses) that inspired the style to the impact of the scroll saw, which allowed local builders to interpret Gothic Revival architectural details in wood, thus creating the Carpenter Gothic style; and the hallmarks of Carpenter Gothic, from sharply peaked gables to board-and-batten siding, peaked windows and doors, gingerbread trim on porches, stained glass windows, and decorated bargeboards, among other features.

The primary focus will be on exterior architectural details in homes and carriage houses, but will also include decorative elements of the Carpenter Gothic style, from wallpapers to carpets and furnishings. The text will also discuss historic interiors, adapting the style for modern living, and floor plans, wallpapers, carpets, and furnishings inspired by the Carpenter Gothic style.

Whether strict and orthogonal or undulating and curved, whether rough and natural or polished and elegant...

Wood is nature’s most remarkable resource, embedded in the history, culture and life of humans worldwide. For the architecture world it is ingenious: malleable and at the same time resilient, fully recyclable and environmentally friendly as it reduces greenhouse gases, universally applicable and locally available. Today, new processing technologies extend the spectrum of its possible applications and the combinability with other building materials, enabling innovative technical and design solutions. In short, anything is possible when it comes to timber, whatever designers conceive can be realized. The traditional building material has become ultra-contemporary and increasingly cutting-edge, offering exciting possibilities for architectural design.

Timberland. The wooden structures of the 21st century

Travel the world to investigate one of the greatest renaissances in architecture: wood. How has this elemental material come to steal the show at luxury hot spring structures and cutting-edge urban renewal schemes? With 100 projects from China, Chile, and everywhere in between, this global survey explores the technical, environmental, and sensory elements that have inspired a return to timber.

Not so very long ago, some might have considered wood a material of the past, long since replaced by more modern components such as concrete and steel. The truth is radically different. Bolstered by new manufacturing techniques and ecological benefits, wood has seen a fabulous resurgence in contemporary construction.

This Bibliotheca Universalis edition explores how architects around the world have created and invented with this elementary material. Featuring follies, very large buildings, and ambitious urban renewal schemes, it celebrates the diverse deployment of wood by architects around the world. We see how wood can at once transform urban spaces, as in the Metropol Parasol in Seville by Jürgen Mayer H., and allow for sensitive interventions in natural environments, such as at the Termas Geométricas Hot Springs Complex in Pucón, Chile, by Germán del Sol.

True to all TASCHEN architecture titles, the book pays tribute to many emerging international talents as well as to such renowned figures as Tadao Ando and Renzo Piano. It celebrates each architect’s vision and innovation, as well as investigating the techniques, trends, and principles that have informed their work with wood. It examines the computer-guided milling that has allowed for novel new forms, the responsible harvesting that allows wood to align with our environmental concerns, and, above all, wood’s enduring appeal to our senses and psyche, comforting hectic modern lives with a sense of Arcadian simplicity.

About the author:

Philip Jodidio studied art history and economics at Harvard, and edited Connaissance des Arts for over 20 years. His TASCHEN books include the Architecture Now! series and monographs on Tadao Ando, Norman Foster, Renzo Piano, Jean Nouvel, Shigeru Ban, Oscar Niemeyer, and Zaha Hadid.
