This book aims to be a portfolio of ideas that showcases houses from all over the world, designed by contemporary, international architects and interior designers.

Each project uses specific materials or concepts that stand out from the rest of its design. Throughout this book, we feature houses made of concrete, stone, brick, metal, wood and lightweight or recycled materials, which have become the hallmark of the project. Sometimes this choice of material was based on the geographic region and climate: wood plus insulation are used more often in colder climates, while tile, concrete and stone are more commonly used in warmer climates. Furthermore, the illustrations are accompanied by practical interior design tips that will help readers create their own style and personality.

Pastels are enjoying an exciting comeback. Forget the sugary pinks of little girls’ bedrooms, today, pastels pack plenty of personality. The best of the bunch have a rich intensity or a subtle sophistication, keeping them the cool side of sweet. They allow you to fill your home with color, without splashing statement brights around, and they bring a warmth and softness to a room.

In Pretty Pastel Style, stylist Selina Lake shows you how to use this truly versatile color palette to create beautiful spaces that are feminine without being girlie; color-rich without being garish. The book first walks you through the Elements of the look. Modern Pastels are contrasted with pops of stronger shades and sharpened with statement furniture. Vintage Pastels plunder the past, taking from it smoky pinks, faded greens, and elegant patterns. Retro Pastels cheerfully channel the ice-cream shades of the Fifties on candy stripes, polka dots, and cute floral prints, while Simple Pastels works with off-whites for an elegantly minimal take on Pretty Pastel Style. Next, Details looks at everything from furniture and lighting, to display and decoration, with inspiring ideas on how to piece the style together. Finally, head to the Spaces section of the book to see beautiful rooms that have used pastels with super-stylish effect.

• An easy-to-achieve, beautiful look for anyone who loves this soft, pretty style.

Past centuries have seen well-to-do citizens and other dignitaries commission prestigious private mansions in large cities, often built along tree-lined boulevards.

From the nineteenth century, many avenues were built as a perfectly straight, broad axis between stately mansions with classic façades, in line with the architectural model that had been introduced by Haussmann in Paris.

Behind these façades very opulent décor was often concealed, with features such as monumental marble fireplaces, oak parquet, natural-stone floors and ornamented stuccowork.

In the twenty-first century, these exclusive mansions are a valuable testament to our rich architectural history.

However, the accounts in this book also demonstrate that these mansions have lost none of their relevance in the modern world: contemporary architects and interior specialists are restoring these houses in a way that is full of respect for the authentic architectural elements, but makes the necessary concessions to the modern way of life. This leads to a constant and fascinating interaction between old and new.

Pardee B.
ID: 3759
Bulfinch Press
The co-chair of the annual Newport Flower Show and a flower-arranging judge with the Garden Club of America, Pardee was a Bon Appetit contributing editor for 10 years and hosted the PBS series The Presidential Palate: Entertaining at the White House. Unlike many residents, Pardee lives in Newport year-round and, though the scale of this land of scions and heiress has been reduced, there’s still plenty of wealth hidden there. As Marion Oates Charles writes in the introduction, "Private Newport revolves, for the most part, around a community at ease with itself." The residents are not pictured here, but they do speak to Pardee about the 18 properties on which she has chosen to focus. There is "A Rocky Hall Christmas" with a giant decorated fir glowing before a burnished wood living room; there are "Sunset Views at Pelican Ledge," where the fireplace is inset with Wedgwood porcelain. While many of the houses date back generations, and period furnishings are appropriate to them, many of the book’s color photos make an eerie, Stepford-like impression. It’s as if the American upper class’s idea of style were frozen in time, endlessly copying 18th-century English and French manors. Pardee is knowledgeable about the histories of various houses ("Gray Craig had a large staff, including thirty gardeners in the summer"), and her pleasure in them is clearly evident. The photos are well-framed and lit, though the interiors can seem chill and antiseptic. But the book’s other main attractions, the sea and the gardens that surround it, are undeniably sumptuous.

By definition, home is a place to share, bet that with family or friends. Yet however gregarious our lifestyles, we all need solitary spaces away to work, relax or unwind after the stresses of the day and Private Places is the book that allows you to create these areas. The book is packed with evocative pictures and practical advice and shows us how to create private places within our home, however hectic our pace of life.
