In the summer of 1937, Walter Gropius, founder of the Bauhaus and a professor at Harvard’s new Graduate School of Design, rented a house on Planting Island, near the base of Cape Cod. There, he and his wife, Ise, hosted a festive reunion of Bauhaus masters and students who had recently emigrated from Europe: Marcel Breuer, Herbert Bayer, László Moholy-Nagy, Xanti Schawinsky and others. Together they feasted, swam and planned their futures on a new continent, all sensing they were on the cusp of a momentous new phase in their lives. Yet even as they moved on, the group never lost its connection to the Cape Cod coast. Several members returned, when they had the means, to travel farther up the peninsula, rent cabins, buy land and design their ideal summer homes. Thus began a chapter in the history of modern architecture that has never been told--until now.

The flow of talent onto the Outer Cape continued and, within a few years, the area was a hotbed of intellectual currents from New York, Boston, Cambridge and the country’s top schools of architecture and design. Avant-garde homes began to appear in the woods and on the dunes; by the 1970s, there were about 100 modern houses of interest here. In this story, we meet, among others, the Boston Brahmins Jack Phillips and Nathaniel Saltonstall; the self-taught architect, carpenter and painter Jack Hall; the Finn Olav Hammarström, who had worked for Alvar Aalto; and the prolific Charlie Zehnder, who brought the lessons of both Frank Lloyd Wright and Brutalism to the Cape. Initially, these designers had no clients; they built for themselves and their families, or for friends sympathetic to their ideals. Their homes were laboratories, places to work through ideas without spending much money. The result of this ferment is a body of work unlike any other, a regional modernism fusing the building traditions of Cape Cod fishing towns with Bauhaus concepts and postwar experimentation.

An impressive selection of extraordinary carpet designs assembled in one volume

Carpets and rugs have been part of our interiors since the beginning of time, from the first bearskin on the cave floor to the precious Savonnerie carpets of the Château de Versailles. Their secret? Their versatility! Carpets cater to our senses: they keep the cold out and are warm and soft to the touch. They are storytellers, too, unfolding a tale of materials, craftsmanship and creativity. Whatever their style or period, carpets and rugs will give an interior an individual stamp and determine the atmosphere and relevance of the room.

This book caters to all tastes, with photographs of interiors featuring breathtaking carpet designs. Within its pages you will find plenty of unexpected inspirations and surprising combinations. The carpets and rugs in this book range from bold and colourful eye-catchers to traditional and minimalist designs that tie the whole room together.

All the carpets and rugs in this book have one thing in common: they are all pure eye candy and deserve their place at the very heart of our rooms.

Today’s chalets have come a long way from their original function as herdsman’s hut in the Alps. They now serve as sites for relaxation and retreat from everyday life, they provide room for soul-searching and introspection. The particular attractiveness of chalets is derived from the interplay of architecture and interior design with the topography and mountainous nature around them.

This volume presents new constructions as well as renovated and reconstructed historical chalets from around the world – in Aspen and Zermatt, the South American Andes and the mountain regions of Japan. The designs are multifaceted, ranging from traditional to modern, simple to luxurious, but the individual expression of each project captures the particular charm of the surrounding landscape.

ID: 3395

Charles Faudree has elevated French Country style to a fine art. With an exuberant decorating attitude based around his favorite principle that "too much is never enough", Faudree has achieved an international reputation for creating settings that have all the elegant accoutrements of a French Country estate, lacking pretension but never charm.

With a discerning taste for the eclectic, Faudree is a master at one of the main tenets of this style-combining traditional prints, patterns, colors, and textures with just the right furnishings. Faudree has always been drawn, almost charismatically, to the charm of Country French. He comments, "There is simplicity, a gentle softness to the furnishings I find very calming and soothing. I love the mix of fabrics, blending plaids with florals and old tapestries. Country French is a truly working-class style."

Faudree is delighted to finally share his extensive knowledge with the public, in this long-overdue book that focuses on how to make any home into an elegant, inviting, and comfortable French Country retreat.

About the Author:

Charles Faudree graduated from Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, with a degree in art. His client list is international, and he is regarded as a master of Country French style. This is his first book. He lives in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
