Percy W. Blandford

Издательство: Dover

Is blacksmithing a lost art? Not according to this master craftsman. It might be one of the world's most ancient crafts, but it remains an exciting and essential one today. Percy W. Blandford presents twenty-four different projects: some are for novices, requiring only a few tools, improvised equipment, and a single propane torch; others call for the skill and equipment of an experienced smith.

Projects include:
- Punches and chisels
- Traditional candlestick
- Door latches and bolts
- Garden tools
- Weather vanes
- Fences and railings
- Tables
- Wheelbarrow
... and many more! A book of ideas and suggestions, rather than an instruction manual on blacksmithing techniques, this volume features eighty detailed figures and diagrams. It also includes lists of materials, step-by-step instructions, and suggestions for variations in design.

ID: 11798
Издательство: Ryland Peters & Small / CICO books

In his most personal book to date, William Yeoward reveals his passion for color, his inspirations and the 'stories' behind his unique use of color as he takes you on a journey through a dazzling array of beautiful homes.

Known for his chic and stylish color combinations, William Yeoward reveals his color secrets, starting with the classic combination of blue and white — there are cobalt silk sofas, sapphire armchairs, aquamarine patterned ceramics, and indigo plush pillows, all combined to evoke a sense of luxury, in William's trademark style. The unique color stories in the book include red, white, and blue in a villa in France, a comfortable coastal retreat with hints of pink, taking you through to lavender and amethyst in the country and the city, soft grey studies in living rooms and table settings, a blazing ochre red contemporary cottage, an orange rustic barn dinner, and a red and steel outdoor kitchen. This is William’s fourth book and is the first one to focus on his passion for color and the sumptuous interiors that can be created by focusing on details and by layering opulent textures, prints, and proportions.

About the Author:

William Yeoward has a worldwide reputation for his trademark table settings and stunning ranges of tableware and collections for the home. He has shops in London and New York and lectures on design throughout the United States, and his work is featured regularly in magazines such as Town and Country and Elle Décor (for whom he is a contributing editor). His previous books include William Yeoward on Entertaining, The Perfect Host and William Yeoward At Home. The author is based between London and Gloucestershire.

It all begins and ends with white.

White is everywhere, from sculptures and art installations to interior and furniture designs to fields of snow and mythical animals. In its countless tones - eggshell, ballerina, off-white, edelweiss, and so many more - white elicits a range of emotions, depending on the viewer, the design, the culture, the use.

Brilliant: White in Design examines the spectrum of colors and talents inherent in white, exploring how it is used, and viewed, in art, design, architecture, and nature. Noted design writer Linda O’Keeffe parses the language of white and considers its strengths and, at times, its weaknesses. She shows that living with white has soothing rewards and dust-collecting drawbacks; that beige is not a four-letter word but a glamorous alternative to its more pristine counterpart; that designing with white reduces everything to pure form; and much more.

In more than 250 photographs, O’Keeffe showcases work, both recent and historic, from around the world - France, Japan, Spain, England, Mexico, Canada, South Africa - and across the United States. Designers and artists include Jonathan Adler, Orlando Diaz-Azcuy, Andy Goldsworthy, Kelly Hoppen, Hugh Newell Jacobsen, Richard Meier, Benjamin Noriega-Ortiz, Andrée Putman, Robert Ryman, Philippe Starck, Kelly Wearstler, and Vicente Wolf.

White always makes a statement. It is distinct, versatile, and unparalleled; it is brilliant.

Contemporary architecture presents itself with various aesthetic standards. Besides the rational function of architectural design, architects now pay close attention to continuity between the interior and exterior of their work. This book collects a number of masterpieces that reflect the trend of modern architectural surface design. The book has been divided into six chapters according to the composition of the building material. The case studies included are accompanied by photographs and details of the modes, which objectively express the ideas and concepts of the architects.

Carlos Cruz-Diez (Caracas, 1923) promotes experimentation with color and is one of the most relevant examples of the Kinetic Art Movement. The catalogue covers Cruz-Diez´s career including his beginnings as a graphic designer. The 1950s and 1960s are presented through a carefully selected group of unedited documents including magazines and catalogues that he illustrated and designed during that time period. This chapter in Cruz Diez´s career directly correlates with his unique artistic language, which he continues to apply in his works today. The catalogue illustrates almost thirty works by Carlos Cruz-Diez. Their presentation takes into account the original series in which they were first exhibited. These series allow insight into the artist´s personal concept and organization of his body of work. At the same time, the series reflect his incredible ambition and eagerness to experiment. His invented jargon stands out in all of the series with titles so typically Cruz-Diez such as Chromatic induction , Physichromie Chromosaturation .

The faсade represents the building’s outer skin and this skin endows the building with character through the choice of materials, textures and tones used to create the composition in accordance with the architect’s design. These are external, generally exposed elements which also perfectly reflect the cultural and aesthetic changes not only in the course of architecture but also the user’s customs, a combination which has also evolved over time.

The choice of one type of roof over another fundamentally depends on the building’s purpose, environmental considerations, climate conditions and the available means to carry out construction. Taking into account the quality of a roof, there are a wide range of solutions available on the market, so it will be up to the architect to provide a building design to suit these specifications, as well as how to best streamline the solution and adapt it to the environment.

In the nineteenth century there was an amazing flowering of ironwork forms, mass produced and widely distributed, but of extreme variety and richness of design. Too often they have been overlooked, or referred to mistakenly as ‘wrought iron’.

E. Graeme Robertson’s interest began decades ago with the realization that cast iron was being destroyed because its aesthetic value was not recognized. To remedy this situation he wrote a number of books on Australian ironwork and then, with his daughter Joan, travelled all over the world to compile this superb photographic inventory of the forms taken by cast iron ornamentation, its national variations, its relationship to architecture and its contribution to the attractiveness of buildings.

Supported by introductory texts, glossary and bibliography, Cast Iron Decoration will be welcomed by art historians, architects, designers and anyone who cares for our global cultural heritage.
