About the Author:

Jan Johnsen began her professional life in Japan in a landscape architecture office. She has been a principal in a landscape design-and-build firm, Johnsen Landscapes & Pools, based in Westchester, New York, for more than thirty years. Her natural design approach is evident in the landscapes that she shares in her books: Heaven Is a Garden, The Spirit of Stone, Floratopia and Gardentopia.

Volume illustrates different positions and research, and attempts to give answers and relaunch issues, dedicating “High_Scapes” - high meaning geographical altitudes and physical excellence - in the various sections where different topics are developed.Some of the answers to the problems presented are derived from the results of the research presented in the first edition of the ALPS Biennial (Alpine Landscape Project Sustainability, June 2008).The book also contains a DVD of the documentary film “Inside the Landscape, the Alps”, shot on location during the Biennial, that relaunches issues concerning the alpine landscape, but generally the reality  and central focus of this matter and the issues linked to it, through images and contributions of the people involved in the research in progress.

Originally published in 1961 as a complementary study to Geoffrey Jellicoe's architectural work Italian Gardens of the Renaissance, this book is intended to present a layman's point of view on the subject, providing immediate first impressions of the countless pleasures that are a feast to the senses, whilst providing a comprehensive background to the gardens, their antecedents and history. Tracing a line through the history and topography of Italy, Mary Johnson - writing under the pseudonym of Georgina Masson - picks out the finest examples of gardens dating from the Renaissance, Mannerist and Baroque periods.
