Historical farmhouses, quadrangular farms and castle farms form an important part of the heritage of the Low Countries.

More and more interior designers, architects, restorers and private individuals with a passion for old buildings are realising that this heritage must not be lost.

In the preface to this book, Curtis Fentress describes his 'mission' as 'figuring out what it means in any given situation to make people feel at home with a structure and then to make that feeling material. 'While no consistent look is imposed in Fentress Bradburn's work, the diverse range of projects examined in this publication are nevertheless highly functional and imaginative buildings which also sit comfortably within their individual context. Projects depicted in this book include airports, municipal buildings, corporate headquarters, cultural and arts centres. Introduction by John Morris Dixon.

Buildings for emergency services have evolved into an independent and fascinating architectural typology in the past two decades. Since the opening of the spectacular fire station for the Vitra factory by Zaha Hadid, police stations, fire departments and rescue services increasingly consist of architecturally amazing buildings. About the Author:

About the Authors:

Anthony W. Robins, formerly survey director for New York’s Landmarks Commission, has written and lectured about the city’s architecture and history for 30 years. The author of Classics of American Architecture: The World Trade Center and Subway Style, he has written for the New York Times, New York Magazine, and Architectural Record. 

The New York Transit Museum, located in Brooklyn, collects historical artifacts that illustrate mass transit’s critical role in the region’s economic and residential development since the 19th century.

We tend to view the activity of playing as a non-serious pursuit - kids' stuff - with neither transcendence nor goal.
