Cox Architects is world-renowned for many aspects of its work, not the least of which has been extending an Australian architectural ethos beyond houses and into large-scale projects such as the Yulara Tourist Resort in Uluru. It is also recognised for creating dramatic and sculptural buildings in steel such as the Brisbane and Sydney Exhibition Centres, the Olympic Aquatic Centre and Superdome, and the Australian National Maritime Museum. In concentrating on work produced in the last five years, this publication profiles and explores the much broader idiom in which Cox Architects practices. The book is divided into two sections, the first comprising a series of essays on the nature of different project types and the second describing recent and current projects, putting philosophy into practice. While the projects have been selected for their diversity of problem solving, client requirements, context and scale, they reveal some constant passions for enriching the city and landscape, for harnessing new technologies, and for imparting environmental sensitivity and cultural relevance to the built environment.

Through over twenty case studies this book constructs a picture of worldwide attempts to address these problems – projects that often use minimal resources to effect the maximum possible change, with the most precious resource being imagination.

Some of the ideas are breathtakingly simple:

E-city is an analysis on the development of Information and Communication Technology. It is a study that illustrates the innovations introduced by new technologies and the significant changes in urban planning and in future urban models. E-city describes these changes in three parts: e-Network, development of digital networks and territorial transformation processes; e-Planning, planning instruments and their innovations related to ICT development; e-City, cities and territories of the future. In the appendix, with a contribution from researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston, and recent studies from the Senseable City Lab, explaining how ICTs help describe, understand, use and project the cities of the future.

In the past, many of the key tenets of the ecological philosophy - sustainability, energy efficiency, harmonious relationship with the environment - appeared to stand contrast to the sweep of science-led ‘progress’ that characterized the modern movement. Today, however, past visionaries are vindicated and yesterday’s eccentricities are today’s legal requirements: every architect has an obligation to the environment as well as to his or her client.

Part one identifies recurring themes in ecological architecture. Part two features twenty-five case studies each focusing on a specific architect, movement or topic. Some of the names are familiar in this context - Rasem Badran, Hassan Fathy - but there are also plenty of surprises - Le Corbusier, Buckminster Fuller, Rudolf Schindler. Part three looks to the future as ecological architecture struggles to deal with global urbanization.
