Experimental Formats & Packaging examines exciting design problems, such as how to make a book that does not look like a book, and how to create packaging that can be taken into new design dimensions while still fulfilling its essential, functional role.

While both formats and packaging are notoriously difficult areas in which to be innovative and revolutionary, the authors have brought together examples that combine awareness of process and materials and creativity without compromising other methods of communication. Over 100 illustrated case studies reveal the ideas and philosophies behind each project, while an extensive directory of materials and processes, plus a range of basic box templates, provides an invaluable grounding to encourage a more experimental approach to design.

Experimental Formats and Packaging combines the content of two highly successful titles in one great value book.

The visual of vinyls. The most daring of record designs

This kaleidoscopic catalogue brings new meaning to the idea of “album art.” Celebrate vinyl not only for the integrity of its sound but also for its artistic potential as a material form. Spanning over 500 show-stopping records — from The Beatles to Bon Jovi, glow-in-the-dark effects to butterfly-shaped discs — discover how daring shapes, colours, and designs fashioned the identities of era-defining records and artists.

Now available as part of TASCHEN’s Bibliotheca Universalis series, this dazzling catalogue of vinyl brings new meaning to the “album art.” Produced in collaboration with Colors magazine, it brings together over 500 remarkable records from the collection of Alessandro Benedetti and Peter Bastine.

The book forms a junction between photography, music, and design, celebrating vinyl not only for the integrity of sound recording but also for its artistic potential as a material form. With featured artists including Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Prince, Michael Jackson, Bon Jovi and beyond, it offers compelling insight into the most intricate details of a performer’s visual identity, from a flamboyant colour to a futuristic mirror effect.

The discs are arranged thematically to span monochrome vinyl; unusual vinyl (including silver, gold or mirror vinyl as well as extremely rare glow-in-the-dark vinyl); multicoloured vinyl; etched vinyl (where music is pressed onto only one side); shaped vinyl (cut into forms that are different from the classic round disc); and picture discs (where a photograph or design is stamped onto the surface of the record). Page after page, this kaleidoscopic encyclopedia of game-changing vinyls is a colourful journey through era-defining records and artists.

The authors:

Italian producer and songwriter Giorgio Moroder helped create electronic dance music, and has worked with Donna Summer, David Bowie, Janet Jackson, Barbra Streisand, and many others. He also founded Musicland Studios in Munich, once used by legendary acts like Led Zeppelin, Queen, and Elton John.

Alessandro Benedetti began collecting coloured and unusual records in 1981, and now has 8,000 discs, including 1,200 coloured vinyl discs. In 1998 his collection won recognition in The Guinness Book of Records. His dream is to open a record museum so he can share his collection with the public.

The contributor:

Peter Bastine has been a DJ, record seller, and concert organizer. From 1977 until 1998 he collected every kind of picture disc; since then, mostly historical 78rpm records. Today his collection comprises around 8,000 picture discs, and has been the subject of several European exhibitions.

About the series:

Peter Carl Fabergé (1846–1920) is deservedly the most famous creator of the stunning gold, silver, and jewel-studded treasures of imperial Russia. Perhaps because of the popularity of his Easter eggs, Fabergé’s skilled competitors have been largely overlooked. Fabergé and the Russian Master Goldsmiths tells their story and features their masterpieces as well as Fabergé’s. Today, the creations of the Russian master goldsmiths are dispersed throughout the world. A broad sampling of masterpieces from the great Russian collections, as well as from private and public collections, are depicted here in nearly 300 full-color illustrations, a number of which are published here for the first time.

The exquisite objects created by goldsmith and jeweler Peter Carl Fabergé and his studio in the late 19th and early 20th centuries for the aristocracy and nobility of imperial Russia are considered to be some of the most refined examples of the jeweler's art of any age. Of greatest fascination are the extraordinary Easter eggs created as special commissions for the Russian imperial family and other notable patrons - works that remain unparalleled in their ingenuity of construction and sheer beauty.

Accompanying a major exhibition Faberge Revealed represents a landmark for the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and for Fabergé scholarship. The essays by Géza von Habsburg and other scholars present new findings on Fabergé, his workshops, and the creation of these extraordinary objects. For the first time all items by or attributed to Fabergé in VMFA's collection are documented along with the museum's significant holdings of other Russian decorative arts. Also included is a section on forgeries that bravely confronts this vexing question. Every object has been splendidly re-photographed for this book - and the detailed photography alone should provide inestimable value for future Fabergé scholarship.

Richly illustrated with some 600 photographs, the volume documents an important collection bequeathed in 1947 to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts by Lillian Thomas Pratt, of Fredericksburg, Va., the wife of General Motors executive John Lee Pratt. Her collection, assembled between 1933 and 1946, comprised several hundred creations by the Faberge workshops and by other Russian imperial jewelers. These exquisite, marvelously crafted objects, range from the majestic jeweled imperial eggs to delicate jeweled flowers in vases to diamond-encrusted icons and tiaras, to animal figures nimbly carved from precious stone.

The choice of weave, type and thickness of yarn, and pattern have an enormous impact on the final appearance of clothing. A garment made of denim or tweed may have the same cut, but they will each have a very different look and feel from one another. This book and CD-ROM set draws together reproductions of some 250 textile weaves, reproduced (and, where needed, enhanced) in such a way as to make them suitable for sketching, either by hand or digitally. This selection has been made with fashion and textile designers in mind, but, of course, the images are also very suitable as backgrounds for graphic applications and web design.

Christopher D Salyers

Dating back several hundred years, the Japanese bento box is as integral a part of the country’s culinary identity as sushi. Today, a contemporary version of the bento box exists, inspired by the rampant popularity of movies, television shows and manga. These charaben, made by parents (mostly mothers) eager to bring attention to their children’s lunch boxes, comprise food crafted into visually creative, appealing and recognizable forms, and are as much about planning and preparation as nutrition.

What better way to make children eat than to turn their midday meals into cartoon characters and video games? With Face Food: The Visual Creativity of Japanese Bento Boxes, writer and designer Christopher D Salyers documents the very real phenomenon of how rice, seaweed, mushrooms, tofu, hot dogs, fish cakes and just about any other edible delight you can imagine are shaped into the likes of Pikachu, Daraemon and Cinderella, bringing health, heart and imagination to the bento box, not to mention a bit of one-upmanship. A brief how-to guide, ingredient lists and interviews with charaben enthusiasts illuminate the many dynamic reasons behind this wholly Japanese pursuit.

As Salyers writes: “There is something marvelous and enchanting in charaben, a something we should all look to find within ourselves - a convalescence of youth. For all of you who have ever eaten or prepared a slap-dash PB&J sandwich, or have been victim of school cafeterias, I offer up these pages as proof that when you show this much dedication to what you or your child eats, the end result will be nothing short of astounding.”

If you have never seen or tasted charaben, Face Food will open a whole new world to you, proving once again how the visual can say so much about a culture and its practices.
