Kenya Hara
ID: 17927
Издательство: Lars Müller Publishers

Muji's art director shares his own personal creative process.

Kenya Hara inspires the world with his impeccable design, from the subtle atmospheres and environments he creates as the art director of Muji and his ethereal exhibition designs to his simple everyday objects, packaging and books. His design aesthetic can be traced back to a private practice: the diligent drafting of ideas and forms in delicate sketches and drawings that ultimately develop into compelling solutions. For the first time in his career, Hara gives insight into the captivating early stages of his design process.

Ranging from tentatively sketched beginnings to confident designs of complex concepts, "Draw" immerses readers in the renowned designer's 40-year-long process of sketching and drawing by hand, leaving no doubt about the origins of his authentic designs. From Olympic logos to silhouettes of dogs and detailed drawings of knots, Hara's drawings are as expansive in subject matter as they are minimalist. Their technical skill engenders a true appreciation for draftsmanship, and could motivate even the most art-averse person to start doodling. Set to inspire the next generation of creatives, "Draw" is a gentle, persuasive call for the return to analog processes in the design cycle.

About the Author:

Kenya Hara (born 1958) is a Japanese graphic designer, author, curator, professor at the Musashino Art University in Tokyo and art director for MUJI. He has been awarded many prizes, including the Japanese Cultural Design Award. Hara is the author of "White", "100 Whites", "Designing Design" and "Designing Japan".

Издательство: Prestel

This book showcases a lesser-known aspect of Maurice Sendak’s oeuvre–his set designs for opera and ballets.

Maurice Sendak is well-known for his acclaimed children’s books, but he was also an avid opera lover and designed a number of sets for opera and ballet productions, among them Mozart’s The Magic Flute, Janáˇcek's The Cunning Little Vixen, Prokofiev’s The Love for Three Oranges, Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker, and an opera by Oliver Knussen based on Where the Wild Things Are. This book brings together over one hundred and twentyfive pieces from among the more than nine hundred in the Morgan Library & Museum’s collection, including preliminary sketches, final watercolors, and cardboard models. Essays in the book discuss the importance of music to Sendak’s work, his fascination with comic strips, movies, mechanical toys, and pop-up books, and the artworks that inspired his stage designs. The book reveals the full breadth of Sendak’s visual work for opera and ballet and highlights his keen sense of humor, his love of art history, and his ability to tell striking stories through his art.

She received her PhD in Art History from the Institute of Fine Arts, New York University, and previously held the position of Assistant Curator of Painting and Sculpture at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Hailed in his lifetime as the "poster king," E. McKnight Kauffer's designs for the London transport system, Alfred Hitchcock, and others are an enduring influence on contemporary advertising and graphic arts.

E. McKnight Kauffer (American, 1890-1954) was a pioneering figure who transformed the field of graphic design between the wars. He drew upon the emerging visual languages of Cubism, Vorticism, and Surrealism to create a modern graphic style that shaped the development of commercial art. Through collaborations with his avant-garde peers in art, literature, and design, including the Bloomsbury Group, Marion Dorn, T.S. Eliot, Langston Hughes, Aldous Huxley, and Man Ray, Kauffer expanded the scope and impact of his field.

This groundbreaking publication is the first to address the full range of Kauffer's career, from sophisticated designs for major clients -- including the London transport system, Random House, American Airlines, and Shell, as well as Allied propaganda posters during World War II--to book covers, rugs, costumes, and stage sets. An interdisciplinary group of authors offer critical perspectives on the cultural context of Kauffer's work, bringing new attention to the designer's depictions of race, gender, and global politics.

About the Authors:

Caitlin Condell is associate curator and head of the department of Drawings, Prints, and Graphic Design at Cooper Hewitt. Emily M. Orr is assistant curator of Modern and Contemporary American Design at Cooper Hewitt.

Text by Catherine Shaw, Contributions by Aric Chen and Lars Nittve and Lyndon Neri
ID: 15674
Издательство: Rizzoli

Drawing on the work of artist and architect William Lim, this book offers a new, enlightened perspective on what Asian design means today.

Exploring design works ranging from furniture and temporary art installations to interior design and architecture by CL3, founded by William Lim, and related studios Lim + Lu and Open UU, this book presents a fresh consideration of the essence of contemporary Asian design and how it has evolved over the past few decades.

The projects selected share a sensitivity to Asian qualities: a deep appreciation of site and context, craft and design details, with imaginative architectural responses delivering a reinterpretation of cultural heritage and traditions.

The book includes a contextual essay by Hong Kong-based architecture critic and author Catherine Shaw, a foreword by architecture and design curator Aric Chen, and a chapter dedicated to conversations on the modern interpretation of eastern aesthetics and the unique experience of designing for a new Asia between William Lim, Swedish museum director, art critic and writer Lars Nittve, and Shanghai-based architect Lyndon Neri.

The projects are presented in a clear, vibrant graphic style designed by William Lim and artist and graphic designer Stanley Wong, aka anothermountainman, to evoke an Asian quality. Each chapter includes a text by William Lim and features original conceptual sketches, photographs, floor plans, and drawings.

About the Author:

Catherine Shaw is an independent architecture, design, and art critic and published author. Originally an urban planner, she writes extensively on architecture, design, arts, and craft in Asia.
